Phineas and Ferb is a Disney Channel animated television series that centers on two stepbrothers and their adventures in their backyard during summer vacation. The series premiered worldwide on February 1, 2008. It is also the first DCOS to premiere simultaneously worldwide. The show's official US premiere was marketed as Phineas and Ferb-ruary, due to new episodes being shown everyday during the month of February. [1][2] Many of the show's voice actors also appear on other Disney Channel shows, such as Hannah Montana, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Vincent Martella, the voice of Phineas, co-stars on the show Everybody Hates Chris as Greg on the CW Network.

On April 9, 2008, it was announced that Phineas and Ferb would return for a second season in 2008. [3]

Plot

Phineas (Vincent Martella) and Ferb (Thomas Sangster) are two open-minded and kindhearted stepbrothers who live with their jealous older sister Candace (Ashley Tisdale), and Phineas and Candace's mom, Linda (Caroline Rhea) and Ferb's dad Laurence (Richard O'Brien) in the town of Danville . The brothers find themselves dissatisfied with just spending their summer vacation outside of school, so they pull off unbelievable and often outlandish stunts (i.e. visiting the moon, building a roller coaster, entering a race car competition, giving a monkey a shower etc.) in order to make summer more exciting. Their sister, Candace, is aware of their activities and tries to tell their mom so it can be put to an end (mostly out of jealously that she wouldn't be able to get away with the same acts). However, their action are always covered up, due to sub-plot of the family's pet platypus Perry being a secret agent (by the name "Agent P") that fights an evil scientist called Dr. Doofenshmirtz, by coincidence, leaving behind no evidence of their daily activities. This causes their mother to question Candace's sanity when she tries to prove what her brothers are doing. It is possible that the boys don't care about their actions, as they don't cause harm, since they occasionally ask their mother if she saw their handiwork.

Characters

Phineas Flynn (Vincent Martella): One of the two titular characters, Linda Flynn's son, Candace Flynn's brother, Ferb Fletcher's stepbrother and Lawrence Fletcher's stepson. Phineas is an intelligent, creative boy inspired to make the summer as great as it can be by coming up with ideas for unusual, exciting, and sometimes impossible activities (such as building a rollercoaster in their backyard). His most important traits are oratory skills, creativity and optimism. He is very polite and is never selfish or rude to anyone. His stepbrother Ferb is his best friend and partner in their activities. He also gets along with his stepfather quite well, calling him "Dad." He loves his sister Candace, yet usually upsets her with his schemes. He has a normal relationship with his mom. He often wonders about the whereabouts of his pet platypus Perry. His catch phrases are, "Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today." "Anybody seen Perry?", and "Hey where's Perry?". A lot of people ask him if he is too young to be working on his current project to which he almost always responds, "Yes, yes I am." (One exception is " Aren't you a little young to be a pop star?") Phineas can play the guitar, the organ, the tamborine, the big bass fiddle, and he is good at scratching records.

Ferb Fletcher (Thomas Sangster): Ferb is a very intelligent boy who rarely speaks. He usually has at least one line in every episode. When he does speak he reveals his baritone voice and British accent, though sometimes, he changes his voice to sound like another, for example, in "The Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror", he changes his voice to sing "The Backyard Beach". He and his father are from the United Kingdom. Ferb is Lawrence's son, Linda's stepson, and Candace and Phineas's stepbrother. He always helps Phineas with his nearly impossible plans. In the episode "I Scream, You Scream", he is shown to like Vanessa Doofenshmirtz by saying to Phineas "I was weak" when he took the wrong blueprints. He's good at playing the guitar, the keyboard, maracas, tambourine, bass, trumpet, bagpipes, harmonica and the drums.

Perry the Platypus (Dee Bradley Baker): He is Phineas and Ferb's pet platypus, who, unknown to his owners, lives a double life as a secret agent. He has a lair under the Fletcher's house that can be entered through a lot of passages, like a tree in the backyard the "Chimneylator", (an elevator inside the chimney), or lots of other places that lead to underground tube systems. His nemesis is Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and he is always sent to foil the doctor's plans, which he always successfully accomplishes. A running gag in the show, is that his missions always end up covering evidence of Phineas and Ferb's activities by accident, thus Linda never finds out about the boys' schemes.

Linda Flynn (Caroline Rhea): Mother to Phineas and Candace, stepmother to Ferb. She is married to Lawrence Fletcher, but she seems not to use his last name as her cooking teacher called her "Miss Flynn", although in "Candace Loses Her Head" Isabella called her Mrs. Fletcher. She is a regular American mother, although she plays in a free form jazz band with Isabella and Jeremy's mothers, and was once a one hit wonder pop star under the name 'Lindana' in the 80s. She is generally busy, or trying to relax, while her daughter tries to get her to see that the boys are up to some crazy plan. Her catch phrase is, "What is it Candace?" Linda seams to think that Candace is crazy and needs professional help. Linda can play the keyboard, the triangle, and the guitar. Her favorite band is Love Handel. Her birthday is June 11th and her anniversary with Lawrence Fletcher is June 15th.

Candace S. Flynn (Ashley Tisdale): Candace is a 15-year old teenage girl. She is always aware of all of the boys' plans. Usually she attempts to get the boys in trouble with their mom, but when she gets her mother to see what they are doing they always look perfectly innocent and normal. She has a love interest in Jeremy. She often uses her cell phone and acts much like a stereotypical teenager when not trying to stop her brothers' antics. She is allergic to dairy (even though she was eating milk with cereal in Journey to the center of Candace, but it might have been soy) and to wild parsnips; they turn her face red and puffy. Also, it makes her voice deeper and it makes her sing like a blues singer. She is also terribly afraid of heights. She also has a teddy bear named "Mr. Miggins". She also gets sick when hanging on monkey bars. She also likes grilled cheese. It is also revealed that she has a "Panic Room" for when she goes crazy. While she is constantly angry at her brothers, there are signs that underneath it all she loves them. Her catch phrases are, "You are so busted." and "Mom! Phineas and Ferb are (whatever they're doing)!" Candace is good at singing and playing a number of instruments, all of which, begin with the letter "B". Her birthday is July 11th. She also had a tree house which Phineas and Ferb remodel.

Lawrence Fletcher (Richard O'Brien): Father to Ferb, stepfather to Candace and Phineas. Lawrence is an archaeologist from the United Kingdom. He is generally unaware of any of his kids' plans. He once became aware of one of the their plans, but was okay with it because they were trying to help their sister. He also keeps his treasured memories in a toolbox. His anniversary with Linda Flynn is June 15th.

Isabella Garcia-Shapiro (Alyson Stoner): Best friend of Phineas and Ferb. She is also the leader of the local Fireside Girls troop. She can variate her voice as Ferb can. She often assists the boys in their plans, enlisting the whole troop of girls in the process, often for badges or other credits. She is also a big fan of the boys and their plots, particularly Phineas, whom she has a crush on and show feelings for him at times. Phineas apparently does not return the feelings and only views her as a friend. It is unclear whether or not he is aware of her crush and most likely is void of it. Isabella makes no efforts to get Phineas to notice her. She is also seen to have a pet chihuahua named Pinky who temporarily spazzes out as shown in "Journey to the Center of Candace". Her catchphrase is, "Whatchya doing?"

Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire): Mad scientist, comic relief and head of Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc. His lair appears to be a standard major corporation, and even has its own jingle. All his plans tend to be thwarted by Perry the Platypus. The Doctor turned to evil because of his unhappy childhood (celebrating his birthday alone, etc). Now he attempts to wreak havoc across "the entire tri-state area." Dr. Doofenshmirtz is divorced and has a teenage daughter named Vanessa. Like Candace, Vanessa is dedicated to exposing her father's evil schemes to her mother. He is not really a doctor as pointed out by his daughter, as his Doctorate Degree has a $15 price tag on it. His catchphrase is "Curse you, Perry the Platypus!" His nemesis is Perry the Platypus and it is often sited that the two enjoy loathing each other. However, in the episode "It's About Time", Dr. Doofenshmirtz meets Peter the Panda and makes him his new enemy. This greatly saddens Perry. After going on a parody of Dr. Phil, Dr. Feelbetter, things are worked out and Perry and Dr. Doofenshmirtz are enemies again.

Jeremy (Mitchel Musso): Jeremy is the love interest of Candace. Whenever activities are going on in the Fletcher-Flynn house, he goes to visit just to enjoy the activity. In an interview with Mitchel Musso, he revealed that Jeremy returns Candace's feelings for him.

Major Monogram (Jeff Marsh): He is Perry's superior on a huge screen in his secret hideout (which was shown in one episode to be a warehouse with a screen that appears when he talks to Perry, a camera, and his assistant) and tells Perry if he needs to do anything.

Karl (Tyler Mann): The person who operates the camera for Perry's secret hideout. He is a bit forgetful and sometimes humiliates the Major, ending up with the usual screen gag. It is revealed once that he is actually an intern.

Stacy Hirano (Kelly Hu): Candace's very enthusiastic best friend. She rarely appears in episodes, but is usually with Candace when something very exciting happens; in "The Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror", she appeared telling Candace that she could be the most popular kid in the neighborhood for having a backyard beach and that Jeremy was there. She also appears in "Secret Agent", joining Candace on a tour bus with a band called "The Bettys".

Vanessa Doofenshmirtz (Olivia Olson): Dr. Doofenshmirtz's 16-year old teenage daughter. Her dad and mom are divorced, yet her mother still has a good relationship with him thinking he is just a bit eccentric, but Vanessa knows about the fact that he is the evil head of Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated, and even about Perry the Platypus, so she constantly tries to demonstrate her mother that her former husband is evil. She is very sarcastic and mild mannered. Her character's relation to Dr. Doofenshmirtz is like that of Candace's relation to Phineas and Ferb, as they both want to show their mothers something odd about someone related to all of them. In this case, Vanessa tries to prove her mom that Doofenshmirtz is evil, and Candace wants to prove her mom about Phineas and Ferb's schemes. In the episode "I Scream, You Scream", it is revealed that Ferb has a crush on Vanessa.

Mrs. Garcia-Shapiro (Eileen Elizondo): Mother of Isabella. She plays bass in a jazz band with Linda Flynn and hosts the neighborhood bridge game.

The Fireside Girls Troop 46321: They are the girl scout group who are guided by Isabella. They like music and never have been seen without a smile on their faces. They usually count on Phineas and Ferb to help get their badges. One's name is Gretchen, as heard in one episode.

Buford Van Stom (Bobby Gaylor): The neighborhood bully. He is tough, yet not. He likes tough stuff, but is afraid of the most trivial things, as shown in "Raging Bully," in which ice-cream falls on his pants and he screams. He also fainted when Ferb pinched him on a spot on his neck.

Baljeet (Maulik Pancholy): He is a foreign child (most likely from India's Punjab region, judging by his name) who is often portrayed as weak and scared, especially around Buford. He did do something interesting in the episode "Jerk De Soleil" (creating the illusion that he had pulled his thumb off of his hand).

Charlene Doofenshmirtz (Allison Janney): Doofenshmirtz's ex-wife although she still seems to like Doofenshmirtz a little. She is in the same cooking class as Linda Flynn. Her daughter, Vanessa Doofenshmirtz, tries to shows her that her ex-husband, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, is evil and fights against an Agent P. Charlene is friends with Linda. Charlene seems to think that Vanessa is crazy and needs professional help.

Grandma Betty Jo and Grandpa Clyde (Caroline Rhea and Barry Bostwick): The Flynn-Fletcher kids' maternal grandparents (they appear in the episode "Get That Bigfoot Outta My Face!" and "The Ballard of Badbeard"). They are old, evidently, and they invite the Flynn-Fletchers and the neighborhood kids to a lake house every summer. Though they are old, they sometimes like to get the best of the kids. The names come from the creator "Swampy"'s great Aunt & Uncle.

Running Gags and Catchphrases

  • In most episodes, Ferb doesn't speak until the end of the day. In some episodes, he tries to explain something in some utterences, but keeps getting interrupted.
  • Candace always tries to get Phineas and Ferb in trouble. She usually calls "Mom! Phineas and Ferb are [whatever they are doing]." For example in the opening sequence in which Candace says, "Mom! Phineas and Ferb are making a title sequence!"
  • In most episodes, Isabella greets Phineas, usually saying "Hey Phineas! Whatcha doin'?"
  • In most episodes, someone will ask Phineas: "Aren't you a little young to be [whatever Phineas and Ferb are trying to do]" and Phineas will answer "Yes, yes I am,"
  • In most episodes, the Mom would answer to Candace, "What is it Candace?"
  • In almost every episode, Dr. Doofenshmirtz would say at the start, "Ahh, Perry the Platypus! What an unexpected surprise! And by unexpected, I mean COMPLETELY EXPECTED !" ex: "Ahh, Perry the Platypus, your timing is uncanny, and by uncanny I mean COMPLETELY CANNY!" This is often used in situations where it makes no sense, such as the use of the word 'impeccable.'
  • As soon as Perry leaves, in almost every episode Phineas will ask, "Hey, where's Perry?"
  • As Perry's mission is over and Phineas & Ferb's scheme is over Phineas will say "Oh, there you are Perry."
  • Almost every episode has a musical number.
  • In almost every episode, Major Monogram (and sometimes the camera-man, Carl) says something funny or has a little "technical difficulty".
  • Often, Dr. Doofenshmirtz adds "Inator" to the end of his invention's name.
  • In almost every episode Perry has a new chute to go to his lair and sometimes something comical happens (like Santa in the "Chimney-vator" or the slide not being waxed and Perry getting stuck to it.)
  • In almost every episode, Doofenshmirtz's plan or machine that he made covers up Phineas and Ferb's scheme, making Candace look crazy (as in "I, Brobot" the magnet he made to erase messages he left ended up on Santa's sleigh, that flew over the boys backyard and picked up the Phinedroids and Ferbots).
  • As Dr. Doofenshmirtz's "evil" plan is ruined, he always screams: "Curse you Perry the Platapus!
  • In almost every episode, when Phineas gets an idea he says "Ferb, I know what we're going to do today!", and often Ferb pulls out a random object related to whatever it is they will do.
  • In every episode with an elevator, the elevator music is Phineas and Ferb's hit single. Once the song was 'I'm Lindana and I Wanna Have Fun'.
  • Whenever it comes up, usually Phineas, or anyone who has to say it, says "you know, they don't do much" when they are talking about Perry.
  • In some episodes Ferb is seen acting like an animal.
  • In most episodes when the Doofenshmirtz building appears there is music that plays along with a jingle singing "Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated!"
  • Occasionally Phineas and Isabella use each other's catchphrases.
  • Mostly when Candace sees one of the boys' plans or Isabella sees them they only acknowledge Phineas and not Ferb.
  • Almost every time, Dr. Doofenshmirtz only vows revenge on the tri-state area, when other thinks it's the world.
  • A recurring gag is Isabella's crush on Phineas. The crush is clear to viewers, but apparently not to Phineas.
  • Instead of talking, Ferb uses other ways to tell somebody something or get attention, like using a piece of paper Phineas wrote to give to the store lady in the blue print shop (in " I Scream, You Scream") or blinking the spotlight on and off until someone looks at him.( in "Dude, We're Gettin'The Band Back Together!".
  • When Phineas and Ferb are sitting under the tree, Ferb is almost always reading a book with an apple on the cover.
  • Whenever Doofenschmirz sees Perry under the disguise of an "ordinary platypus", he will say in an incredulous tone, "A platypus?!" At which point Perry will stand upright and don his fedora hat, and Doofenschmirtz will cry, "Perry the Platypus?!"
  • Almost every time Candace has nothing to tell on Phineas and Ferb about, she would be with or be on the phone with her friend Stacy.
  • Usually, Phineas and Ferb's creations are usually ruined by Dr. Doofensmirtz and their own platypus.
  • In some episodes when Candice is talking to someone else, you can see Phineas and Ferb getting equipment in the window.

Ferb's Lines

Ferb, one of the titular characters, usually has just one or two lines of dialogue in an episode, but has been know to say more. Rollercoaster- “They’re (platypus) the only mammals to lay eggs.” (Which isn't true, echidnas also lay eggs and are mammals.)
Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror- First, he sang the "Backyard Beach" song, (not the voice of Thomas Sangster) and "With a slight chance of scattered lawn gnomes."
Flop Starz- Ferb's line here is actually a line in their song, "Baby, baby, baby". (not the voice of Thomas Sangster.)
Lights, Candace, Action- "But the Internet is forever." Also, he made angry monkey noises when Phineas gave Candace a sandwich and said "Ferb hasn't eaten

Raging Bully- Ferb says two lines in this episode, the first a fact about nature: "Sharks have to continue to move forward or they'll drown." and the next one was a justification to why he used the Vulcan neck grip on Buford: "Well, he was all up in my face."
Candace Loses Her Head- "Well it was definitely better than the gorilla in the cake."
Runaway Run Way- "You do realize that's French for pencil neck."
The Magnificent Few- "I reckon herding cattle ain't for city folk."
S’Winter- "It's a unique and logic defying amalgam of 'winter' and 'summer'."
Jerk de Soleil- "Perhaps Buford truly is amazing."
Are You My Mummy - "You know, mummies have their brains pulled out of their noses."
Ready For the Bettys- "Actually, I.." "Actually..." "Actually..." "Look PHINEAS for the last time, I didn't.." "Actually, I.." "UGH! I give up!

Get That Bigfoot Outta My Face- "Well actually, I.."

References to Other Media/Goofs/Trivia

  • In the episode "The Fast and the Phineas", Phineas and Ferb race car #42. This is a possible reference to Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and in NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2007, Juan Pablo Montoya driving the #42 car as well, won the Dodge/Save Mart 350 in his rookie year, as Phineas did in the race. Swampy Marsh is a big fan of Juan Pablo Montoya.
  • In the episode "Rollercoaster", Candace mentions that Jeremy works at Mr. Slushy Burger, but in later episodes is shown at Mr. Slushy Dawg. Afterwards, it was changed back to Mr. Slushy Burger.
  • In the episode "Raging Bully", Ferb beats Buford (the bully) by using the Vulcan Nerve Pinch from Star Trek
  • On February 29, the episode they advertised as the last in the marathon was Journey to the Center of Candace, but when it premiered on Disney Channel East it was "Mom's Birthday" although the credits were those of Journey to the Center of Candace (after the show Journey to the Center of Candace could be seen on Disney XD online). On Disney Channel West it was Journey to the Center of Candace, however.
  • In the episode Are You My Mummy, when Candace was in the elevator you can hear the song "I'm Lindana And I Wanna Have Fun" mentioned in Flop Stars as elevator music.
  • Almost anytime Doofenshmirtz is playing music, it's the elevator version of "Gitchee Gitchee Goo"
  • Linda plays in a jazz band with women who's children have crushes on her son and daughter.
  • On the episode, It's About Time!, Dr. Feelbetter is an obvious play on Dr. Phil and other daytime talk shows.
  • In the episode Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together the drummer from Love Handel was named Swampy after the shows creator. The singer Danny was named after the other shows creator and Bobby was named after Bobby Gaylor, one of the writers and the voice of Buford.
  • In Raging Bully Phineas said he likes to "Keep Moving Forward" making reference to Disney's movie "Meet The Robinsons".
  • On the episodes Jerk de Soleil and Candace Loses Her Head Candace is laying in bed with her regular clothes on, but when she gets out of bed, she has on pajamas.
  • In the episode Dude We're Getting the Band Back Together Lawrence says it is Thursday But when Candace comes out she shows their anniversary on a Tuesday from her calendar.
  • In the episode Toy to the World it shows that Ferb is left-handed.
  • In the episode Dude We're Getting the Band Back Together in the song "Danny's Story", while playing the drums Ferb looks like Slash from Guns N' Roses.
  • In "Toy to the World", it is said the Perry the Platypus is a marsupial, but he is actually one of two monotremes, or egg-laying mammals.
  • Also note a music video including four songs aired on Disney Channel on March 7, 2008.
  • The song 'The Moments When We Didn't Get Along' was originally going to be a bit longer, but the writers cut one of the verses to save time.
  • The googolplex mall is named after a large number
  • In the episode "Raging Bully" after ice cream falls on Phineas' head, Buford says "Whadda ya say, Even Steven?", making a reference to another Disney Channel show, Even Stevens.
  • In Dude We're Getting The Band Back Together, you can see Candace hugging Phineas. But yet in the scene directly after that, they're no longer hugging. Another interesting point is when Ferb's playing with the lights, Phineas acts like he doesn't even know who Ferb is....
  • In Toy to the World Phineas is also seen left-handed
