They realize that almost the entire town is at the prom, and find all the zombies gone to the prom. At the school, Zombified frogs attack, and infect the science teacher who attacks the dane as a zombie. Once they reach the school, they find everyone dead or a zombie, and coach keel announces that he will wire it with C-4, and destroy it. The coach has wired almost the entire building, when he accidentally drops the remote into the middle of the dance floor. Jimmy realizes only he can get it, and goes into the gym to retrieve the remote so that he can detonate the bomb. Lindsey follows him. The zombies recognize them, and attack them, but the band comes to the rescue. Jimmy and Lindsey have almost reached the remote when a zombie trips on the music amplifier cord, thus turning off the music. The zombies attack again, but the drummer Dave, jumps into the crowd and plugs the cord back in. Lindsey is attacked by a zombified Mitch, but she crushes in his head. Lindsey and Jimmy get the remote, and escape out of the gym, along with the band. In the midst of this, Gwen takes Steven into the bathroom, and reveals to him that she was bitten by a zombie, and tells him that he's the only one she can trust, he promises not to kill her, and the two begin to kiss. Suddenly, Gwen turns, and eats Steven's tongue, and lips, infecting him. The rest of the survivors escape. The zombified science teacher, Frank, attacks Jimmy as he and Lindsey are escaping, but Jimmy splits open his head with an axe. Jimmy and Lindsey escape with the others, as the building explodes destroying the zombies, and the survivors under the direction of Coach keel, escape to destroy the power plant to stop the infection, and drive off in a school bus. As they leave, the gravedigger is shown, shaking his head, and rolling forward the wheelbarrow to collect the bodies.

Production

The low-budget independent film was based on a script written in the late 1990s.[1]

The cast of Dance of the Dead marked the debut of relatively unknown Georgian natives—including Greyson Chadwick, Chandler Darby, and Carissa Capobianco—and the return of sophomore actors Jared Kusnitz (Doll Graveyard) and Randy McDowell (Good Intentions).[2]

Reception

Box office performance

Dance of the Dead premiered at the 15th annual South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, March 7-15 2008 along side a lineup of 113 feature films, including 64 world premieres, high school-themed features and rock documentaries.[3] It was a 'Round Midnight selection.[4]

The film was screened at the 32nd annual Atlanta Film Festival in April 2008, and considered a "must see."[5] Three separate showings of the film were sellouts at the Atlanta Film Festival.[6]

Critic response

Critics were mostly positive. Jason Whyte called it a "triumph in nearly every way; not only is an independent film that takes its small budget and runs with it, it is everything you want out of a horror comedy and more."[7] Scott Weinberg was surprised that "character development" was possible, and thought it "fast and funny, sick and sweet, geeky and gory. Basically, a whole lot of fun."[8] Expecting a "cheesy zombie flick," reviewer Brian Gibson instead found a "zombie/prom weekend film that ended up being one of the best surprises of the [film] festival."[9]
