Your peer review comments on shoe polish

Hi Nichalp, thanks for your comments. I'll do my best with them. And for the picture - that's motivation!  ;) The only comment I am unsure about is the 'dubious copyright nature' of the image ... ? I thought promotional images were ok to use, but then I again, I don't know much about image copyrights. Proto t c 12:00, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've put it here. Proto t c 14:08, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Life in India

Its great. I thought the horiz.line would be distracting but on the EoI page, it actually makes it stand out. pamri 13:09, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about being so quick to put it on the FAC without looking over the former FAC. I've made an attempt at referencing many things mentioned in the former FAC. SEWilco fixed the TOC problem just a bit. Is it any better now? -- A Link to the Past 15:00, August 15, 2005 (UTC)

Dragonfly list

Thanks for your suggestions regarding List of Dragonfly species recorded in Britain. Could you tell me which particular items of text you think ought not to be in bold font? Quite happy to get rid of some of it if there is too much. The red links are deliberate - I'm trying to encourage other people to write articles on all these species, so that I don't have to. Many thanks - SP-KP 18:07, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mumbai

I'm having a dispute with a user on the definition of 'Mumbai'. (Template Talk:Mumbai infobox). Mumbai is defined by the two districts. This area is called the Mumbai metropolis. A city/metropolis in India is defined by a municipality. He cites the MMRDA website (see the map). [MMRDA is a state govt. initiative, not a municipality].

Unfortunately the term "Mumbai" is not used at all outside the municipal limits as defined on the Mumbai page, and is not considered a part of the city by anyone of us here, or by residents in those area, (New Bombay/Kalyan etc.). User:Nichalp/sg 06:13, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

I glanced over the discussion. Will give my inputs once I find some time. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:36, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hindi

Hi Nichalp, can you fix up the Hindi wikibook a bit? For example http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Hindi:Basic_Hindi contains links to pictures of the words instead of just having the devangari written there. If you could fix that, that would be great. Even better would be to record sound samples, but that would be asking a lot. Or maybe you would know someone that would like to help with that? I am just starting to learn Hindi, starting with learning the alphabet, and I found our Hindi material is not very good so far. Our Hindi article doesn't even have the devangari for all the consonants. I reallized my response message on my talk page sounds a lot harsher than I meant it, and I do appreciate that you thought of me. Thanks - Taxman Talk 14:54, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

London

It will depend on how you define London - see London#Defining London - but I would generally call those areas home counties and not London: however, parts of the traditional counties are now in Greater London or within the M25. -- ALoan (Talk) 15:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They are not in London (although historically, Surrey covered much of what is now South London, with historic Kent in what is now SE London, they aren't generally considered to be "London" now - except for cricketing purposes!) jguk 18:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Greater London is well-defined now (I mean the concept, I haven't read the article). I suggest going with data for Greater London, jguk 06:50, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - just be specific about which "London" you are talking about: City of London (the extremely central "square mile") is likely to be too narrow, as is Inner London. On the other hand, Greater London is well defined, but includes lots of suburban areas. -- ALoan (Talk) 09:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dragonflies

Hi - many thanks for your reply. Could you expand on your first comment - which text do you believe is unnecessary (or did you mean unnecessary formatting?). My view is that bold has been used correctly, but if others disagree, I'm happy to remove any bold formatting which causes a problem. However, I can't do that unless you tell me which items you think are bold which shouldn't be.

Also, I didn't understand why you suggested that I create stubs for the red-linked species, as I had explained why I hadn't. If I have misunderstood your message, please try again. - SP-KP 18:04, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. Just wanted to thank you for supporting my recent RfA. Cheers! --Ngb 19:17, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Belgium

I have made a lot of changes within Belgium most according to your suggestions.

  • I think reducing more the before independence section would be too much. It is important in this section to keep a NPOV and treat all periods of time on a same neutral footing. We cannot only pick out the parts of history which seem to lead to the building of a Belgian, Flemish or whatever nation (as was done in the past -- see discussion about why Belgium is not featured anymore).
  • Don't you think this is a matter of taste whether the subtitles in Culture and Before Independence are kept or not. I personally have the feeling they really help the reader.
  • I have separated the section communities, regions and provinces from politics. This section can definitively not be merged with Geography. It can be with politics but not geography because the territoriality of the Communities is not that simple. This can even lead to NPOV conflicts if not carefully done.--131.220.68.177 09:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Now the introduction seems ok to me. Belgium is a small country with high population density in the middle of Western Europe. Second Belgium is characterised by two languages and the resulting conflicts and complicated history and institutions. The name of Belgium is not relevant because it leads to the wrong opinion that Belgium existed in the antiquity. --131.220.68.177 13:46, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I don't think the history of the name is that interesting: it must be mentioned but not here. If I well understand what you mean, you are looking for something which could make the intro a bit appealing. I thought about the following but I have the feeling that's not that politically correct:

The Belgians are well-known for their French fries, their chocolates and their eternal quibbles.

What do you think?--131.220.68.177 14:26, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I think I have it --131.220.68.177 15:08, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dragonflies

Many thanks for your very useful comments about bold text and references - I will implement these changes on the page as soon as I can.

With regard to the redlinks, if you would like something done about those, I think you should probably make these comments to Dsdmgold not to me, as it is his idea that the list be nominated for promotion to Featured List status. I am happy to make changes to the list page to improve it for readability etc, and if these also help it to become a featured list, that's good. However, it's unlikely that I'll have time to create stubs for all species on the page though, still less full articles. - SP-KP 19:05, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My userpage

Hi.

I see that you had taken upon you, no doubt with the best intentions, to 'correct' the spelling on my userpage. However, I would be gratefull if you in the future instead directed my attentions to such things on my talk page - I like to have controll of my own userpage, as I'm sure you do too.

If you do wish to be helpfull, I got one article up for peer review as well as one listed as a featured article candidate that I would love to get comments on. Not related to neither India nor cricket, but hopefully interesting all the same.

WegianWarrior 19:14, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Similarly. As far as I'm concerned, if anyone reading my talk page does not know what country New York is in, then they probably don't care. -- Jmabel | Talk 02:05, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

Thank You

Thanks for giving me a barnstar. Its my 1st barnstar and that makes it all the more special. Again, thanks. --{{IncMan|talk}} 21:45, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would encourage you to take another look at the page and reconsider your vote. I have expanded it using some reviews I found of the books, and added covers of all the original 40 books. Thanks. [[User:JonMoore|— —JonMoore 20:24, 29 May 2006 (UTC)]] 00:22, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your concerns:

  • I moved some of the material around to where the current flag and it's information is fist, then you have the historical flags afterwards
  • Use since 1991 has been changed to 1995 to reflect the year it was replaced
  • I removed the brackets
  • I added the meaning of the colors. While the meaning of the green did not change, the meaning of the red color did changed slightly. The red in the BySSR flag stood for the revolution, the current flag used red to symbolize the armies of the past defending Belarus.
  • I have no clue what the flags are made out of, since I do not know what the law requires (if at all).

Please see Discussion about the hi-4 tag. Thanks Nichalp for all of your kindly assistance with all of this. Hey Nichalp, thanks for the script. Bahut aur hacha hae! Now I can see the script in MS IE! (But not yet in Firefox for some reason, which probably requires some more tweaking of Firefox on my part now.)
Since I am no longer blind, I have now been able to try to finish fixing the hi-4 template at Template:User_hi-4. I'm not certain as to whether or not I did this correctly, and if you could possibly give it one final go-over, that would be very much appreciated. You have restored sight to the blind I would suppose, but I wouldn't yet try to start walking on water just yet, but you never know...... :) -Scott P. 15:20:14, 2005-08-21 (UTC)

WikiProject Holidays

You may be interested in the WikiProject, WikiProject Holidays, a WikiProject that will focus on standardizing articles about Holidays. It has been around for quite some time, but I'm starting it up again, and would like to see some more members (and our original members) around the help out. Cheers. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 21:10, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at my userpage and remembered it. As to the articles, we probably need to build consensus on the structure of them at the wikiproject (it seems pretty good as it stands, however) and then see if we can change the articles accordingly. Also, you may want to consider adding the infobox to the articles. Happy festival-ing :D — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 13:39, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we could expand it to public observances, as they are sort of a holiday. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 03:08, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Try organizing it a little, and adding a history section. Also, you can change the color of the infobox. You should do the subst: thing and change the colors to match the country it's celebrated in, etc. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:16, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Silesia

Independence? Nope. I have heard some about movements for more autonomy, though. There is for example the Ruch Autonomii Śląska (Movememt for the Silesian Autonomy). Unfortunately, their English webpage seems 404, so there is only Polish and German (see link). You may also want to browse through their link page, some seem to be in English. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 19:03, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Mumbai article modification (source issue)

Hello, the slum statistic was mentioned below in the "BusinessWeek" of August 12, only I felt it needed pointing out in the preamble as well, to give a balanced view of the city.

Thank you for your constructive comments. If there is a continued problem with my correction's legitimacy, please let me know and I'll clear it out.

Janmashtami

Hello, Nichalp. I need help again. Could you tell me when Janmashtami is, please ? The article didn't say when, but it's listed on Template: Current events for August 27. I checked on the 'Net, and theholidayspot.com says August 26, but 123greetings.com says August 27. My question on Talk:Janmashtami went unanswered. When should this holy day appear on the MainPage ? I am quite confused. This holy day is notable enough for the MainPage, right ? Thanks in advance. -- PFHLai 03:42, 2005 August 25 (UTC)

Great ! I'll post this on the Sel. Anniv. template for the 27th. Thank you. -- PFHLai 05:57, 2005 August 25 (UTC)
Tintin says it's the 26th, i.e. tomorrow. I've asked him to add to the Janmashtami page. Regional differences, eh ? I wonder what I should do for the MainPage.... -- PFHLai 07:02, 2005 August 25 (UTC)
Regional differences. Happens often and for many festivals. I have checked that it is on 26th for Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Tintin 07:06, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted "Janmashtami in Hinduism (2005)" on the MainPage template for both the 26th and the 27th. Could you add the dates to the Janmashtami page, please ? I wouldn't know which place celebrate this day on what day. Thanks. -- PFHLai 07:17, 2005 August 25 (UTC)
I added the dates. Is it alright to put it just as North and South, or should we say North and Central India ? Tintin 07:31, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've revised the 2 MainPage templates accordingly, mentioning North & South India, respectively. Thanks a lot. :-) -- PFHLai 07:41, 2005 August 25 (UTC)
Thanks

Nick, There are another article called Krishna Janmaashtami which talks about Janmashtami from a South Indian perspective. The names Gokulashtami, Sreekrishna jayanti (incorrectly mentioned in the article as Sree jayanti) are terms used in the South. 'little feet drawn with flour paste' is also a South Indian custom, afaik. Shouldn't they be merged ? Tintin 08:08, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the merge, Nick. :-) -- PFHLai 02:15, 2005 August 26 (UTC)

Yes, there is VAT on goods imported from outside the EU - as the article says VAT is generally charged at the border, at the same time as customs duty when goods enter the EU from other states. However, it must be said that goods often enter the EU without it being collected (in the post, or people's luggage). -- ALoan (Talk) 09:29, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
