If you are here to register a complaint regarding this bot's edits, before doing so please note:
  1. Questions and complaints can be directed to the Image Copyright Help Desk where a team of volunteers will endeavor to offer useful advice in a convivial atmosphere. If you are using this service, remember that help desk volunteers are not responsible for BetacommandBot and do not decide which images get tagged. Please try and remain calm when using the help desk.
  2. There is a very clear policy regarding the use of images that are not released under free content licenses. This policy is located at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. Complaints about the policy itself should be directed to the talk page or to the Wikimedia Foundation; this bot merely enforces it.
  3. Read this talk page and its archives before registering your complaint. It is likely someone has already registered a similar complaint, and that complaint will have been given an answer.
  4. Read the policy
  5. Check and make sure the image has a valid source
  6. Make sure that the image has a valid Fair use Rationale (A guide can be found here)
  7. I will not add rationales for you. As the uploader it is your responsibility NOT mine.
  8. I do not want to see images deleted
  9. All images must comply with policy
  10. A generic template tag is NOT a valid fair use rationale.
  11. If you're here to whine and complain that But <place image name here> is just like my image and isn't tagged for deletion I will tag that image too, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
  12. There is a very clear policy regarding having fair use rationales on fair use images. This policy is located at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria point #10(c). Rationales must be provided for each use of an image. Also please see Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline.
  13. We do not permit fair use, copyrighted images to exist on Wikipedia if rationales for that image's use are not provided. Please see Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images and media #6. Also please see the Wikimedia Foundation's resolution on this matter at Resolution:Licensing policy point #4.
  14. For quite some time, we have attempted to encourage people to provide rationales. The results of this effort have been dismal at best.
  15. The creator of this bot has come under fire for performing this work manually. One of the main complaints is that the effort to tag images could just as readily be spent providing rationales. This is not the case; the uploader and/or user of each fair use image is the person who should provide the rationale. A non-involved editor can not know under what principles the user of an image intended such use as fair use.
  16. The use of fair use, copyrighted images on the Wikimedia servers is covered by United States law. Our policies with respect to this bot's actions are based on that law. Please see Fair use#Purpose and character.
  17. Bug reports are very welcome; tagging images as this bot is doing per policy is not a bug. If you find a bug please file a report here

Bot vs Bot

Your bot is undoing all the edits of User:John Bot, which seems to be harmlessly adding a WikiProject to some talk pages. Is this intentional? Phlegm Rooster (talk) 03:51, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

yeah, john bot when crazy and was adding it to a lot of pages that it shouldnt have, I was asked to mass revert. βcommand 03:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okie dokie. Phlegm Rooster (talk) 03:54, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Does that make it okay to also revert talk pages that were correctly tagged? (See Talk:PER1) People should check the edits of their bots. In both cases. --Pesco (talk) 22:10, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • But tagging all those talk pages for speedy deletion as {{db|bot error}} was not the right thing to do -- especially when John Bot correctly tagged many of those pages for the WikiProject Genetics. If the article didn't belong to that WikiProject, it would have been better to delete the WikiProject tag rather than tag the article for speedy deletion, as the latter creates unnecessary work for administrators. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:03, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot vs. Bot Number 2

this edit shows BetacommandBot undoing MBisanzBot's minor change from #151 to mdash. Did someone start a bot cage match and forget to pass out the popcorn? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 03:38, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot wars are almost as fun as Clone Wars. Enigma message 03:43, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
MBisanzBot made some major errors and I was asked to revert, BetacommandBot (talk) 03:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Use of U.S. military decoration image on User:BetacommandBot

Hello. I am removing the image associated with an award granted to this bot by another user. The image associated with the Wikipedia award is a a decoration of the United States Air Force and should not be used in association with a Wikipedia award. I would hope that just on the principle of it you would agree and find a substitute image. There are also U.S. laws governing the use of military decoration symbols, such as 18 U.S.C. § 704. If you disagree with this removal please discuss the issue here before reverting my edit again. I will also place a notice on the talk page of the user that originally gave you the award so they may choose an alternate image. Thank you. --Pesco (talk) 03:52, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I personally agree with Pesco, but after receiving the following reply at Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests#Image:Air_Force_Good_Conduct_Medal_ribbon.png, I found it necessary to revert his deletion. It is an issue for either BetaCommand or the user that posted it to let it stand, or change it. Dbiel (Talk) 04:47, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Pursuant to the conversation at the above link, I've opened up a "Request for Comment" at the talk:Image use policy page. Thanks!

Typo in warning

Your bot's warning message has incorrectly used "insure" in place of "ensure" in the following:

Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Please correct.--Ainlina (talk) 09:06, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to dictionary.com, either one is acceptable. 72.205.14.47 (talk) 16:37, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, both spellings can mean "guarantee" 1 != 2 16:41, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Query

I need help renaming about 200 articles. Doing this by hand would take me all day.

Can your bot rename articles, or be adapted to do so?

If so, please contact me.

Thank you.
