The following is a list of characters from the television series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Characters are listed in the order of main characters, secondary characters, and so on.

Main characters

Aang

Aang (Mitchel Musso in the unaired pilot, Zach Tyler Eisen onwards) - The fun-loving, 12-year-old (plus 100 years spent in suspended animation which is 112-years-old) main character of the series and the current incarnation of the Avatar, the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. As the Avatar, Aang must master all four elements to bring peace to the world. This burden was dropped on his shoulders early in life and eventually led him to being frozen in an iceberg for one hundred years until Katara and Sokka accidentally destroyed the iceberg which awakened him.

Katara

Katara (Mae Whitman) - The 14-year-old Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe still living in the South Pole who, along with her brother Sokka, discovers Aang. She and Sokka accompany him on his quest to defeat the Fire Lord and bring peace to the war-torn nations. She is a very gifted Waterbender who, by season two, achieves her dream of becoming a master Waterbender. She was trained by Master Pakku of the Northern Water Tribe, who was her Gran Gran's ex-fiancee. Katara was taught to waterbend in the North Pole & she learned how to bloodbend from Hama. After her mother died she became very motherly toward Sokka. This trait eventually goes on to Aang and Toph, the latter of them becoming very irritated by it later on in season three.

Sokka

Sokka (Jack DeSena) - A 15-year-old warrior of the Southern Water Tribe who, with his sister Katara, accompanies Aang on his quest to defeat the Fire Lord. Unlike his three human companions, Sokka cannot bend an element. He constantly struggles to deal with his lack of mystical power in a world filled by Benders. His weapon of choice is his boomerang. During season three, Sokka is taught the art of the sword by a fire nation swords master, and he uses meteor iron to make his own sword.

Toph Bei Fong

Toph Bei Fong (Jessie Flower) - A 12-year-old, blind Earthbender who leaves her wealthy lifestyle and home to join Aang on his quest in season two. Her parents are incredibly overprotective, leading her to rebel and fight in underground tournaments. Her popularity as "The Blind Bandit" attracts a hopeful Aang who, at that time, was looking for an Earthbender to teach him. Though blind, Toph has been shown to be a very exceptional Earthbender, possessing abilities unique only to her, such as bending metal.

Prince Zuko

Prince Zuko (Dante Basco) - The exiled 16-year-old prince of the Fire Nation who is obsessed with capturing the Avatar in his quest to restore his honor and to redeem himself in the eyes of his father, List of Avatar: The Last Airbender major secondary characters#Fire Lord Ozai|Fire Lord Ozai. After being branded a traitor at the beginning of Book Two, he begins to change from a spoiled prince to an outcast who begins to pity and bond with the same people his nation terrorized. He later betrays his uncle in order to restore his honor at the end of season 2. However he begins to realize his mistake and begs his uncle's forgiveness. Able to see the error of his ways he confronts his father during The Day Of Black Sun and tells him the truth about the Avatar's supposed death. He leaves the palace in order to break Iroh out of jail only to find he has already escaped. He then follows the fleeing Avatar in order to align with him against the Fire Nation. On book three, he becomes Aang's firebending teacher. During of the episodes on book 3, He and Aang faced the Firebending Masters (The Red and Blue Dragon) which taught them the beauty of firebending.

Princess Azula

Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle) - The 14-year-old princess of the Fire Nation, Zuko's younger sister, Iroh's niece, Fire Lord Ozai's favorite child and one of the major antagonists of the series. Azula has been especially cruel all her life. Her mind is set on war and power; she manipulates and even tortures others, including her brother. Azula is short-tempered and loves to play with her enemy during a fight. As a cause of this Azula is thought of as a monster by her mother. It has been shown that Her mom likes Zuko more than Azula. She has the unique ability bend blue fire, or lightning, which indicates her firebending is hotter and stronger than most other firebenders.

Iroh

Iroh (Mako in seasons 1 and 2, Greg Baldwin onwards) - A retired Fire Nation general and Prince Zuko's uncle, who is also branded a traitor in Book Two. Iroh is the older brother of Fire Lord Ozai and was the original heir to the throne of the Fire Nation. He looks upon Zuko as a son more than as a nephew, especially after the loss of his only son, Lu Ten.
