The G900 is a mid-to-high end smartphone in the Sony-Ericsson G-series (G stands for 'Generation Web') line-up of Web Enabled Mobile Phones[1].

The handset was announced by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM congress) on February 10, 2008 at Barcelona Spain and is marketed as a touchscreen organizer alongside G700. The phone is based from the Symbian OS 9.1 UIQ 3.0 Platform with a number of interface enhancements like Touch Panel, Media Center, a Walkman Touch Player, A renovated Touch Operated Camera interface with it's novelty Touch Autofocus to ensure finger friendly operation. The Phone houses WLAN 802.11b/g, 3G UMTS (384kbit/s) HSCSD, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP.

The Touch Panel helps in navigating the UIQ interface much easier. the panel provides quick shortcuts accessible through a few number of screen taps. although tapping the application launcher icon on the panel will take the user on the standard UIQ application launcher.

System Hardware

Sony Ericsson G900 is powered by a 208Mhz ARM9 CPU. Several mobile phone fForum members were puzzled whether the phone uses the Nexperia PNX4008 as seen on P990 and P1 but there were some discrepancies like the fact that the Nexperia CPU Chip only renders maximum resolution at 4MP images while the G900 exceeds to 5 megapixel. Similar to P1 and W960, G900 has a 128MB of RAM to ensure very good multitasking applications and productivity. G900 has a 256MB Flash Memory and there is 160Mb left for the user. This can be further expanded up to 8GB with the memory stick micro (M2) card slot.

The Sony Ericsson HGE-100 Handsfree GPS accessory was compatible with the G900 enabling the phone to use location based services and navigation.

Imaging and Media

The handset integrates a 5 megapixel sensor with Autofocusing lens, the camera interface has been revamped and was designed as more finger friendly compared with the earlier batches of UIQ 3 camera phones(P990 and P1), It's one novelty feature: the Touch-Point Autofocus enables the user to select the focus point with a bare touch on the space inside the rectangular border on the LCD screen. The phone has a built-in LED Flash which doubles as a torch when not using the camera application. The phone records video at QVGA resolution (320x240) at 30 FPS.

G900 uses the Media Manager software interface designed by Sony which greatly resembles the XMB UI in the Sony PlayStation 3 and PSPs. it organizes media files on the storage and provides step by step process in opening images, videos and audio files. The phone also features a Media player similar to Sony Ericsson W960 with MegaBass.
