This article covers the Lego Bionicle character. Makuta is also a Ute (Native American) word meaning "direct" or "precise".

Makuta is a fictional character in Bionicle, a story and toy line created by Lego. Makuta is one of the primary villains of the Bionicle universe. He is called the "brother of the Great Spirit Mata Nui"; however he is actually a member of a less powerful race of beings. The name Makuta is possibly the name of this species.

Story

According to legend, Makuta was jealous of the great spirit Mata Nui (for whom the island in the 20012003 storyline is named), and cast him into an eternal slumber. Originally Makuta a protector of the Matoran; however he turned against them for unknown reasons. On the island of Metru Nui, Makuta masqueraded as the ruler of the Matoran, Turaga Dume, plotting to secretly encapsulate them and awaken them as their saviour. He was defeated by the Toa Metru, and sealed inside a "protodermic chamber".

After the Matoran exodus to Mata Nui, Makuta escaped his confinement (he does not appear in the movie BIONICLE 3:Web of Shadows, but the Hordika freed him by killing Roodaka, who had a fragment of his prison) and took up his reign of evil there. At this point, infected masks, Kanohi corrupted by his essence, were used to coerce Rahi beasts into obeying him. The Toa defeated the infected Rahi and descended into Makuta's lair, Mangaia. Makuta appeared simply as an infected Matoran. He was defeated by the Toa from the Bionicle launch there for a short time. Makuta stalled to regain power by awakening the Bohrok, an army of robotic drones originally created to level Mata Nui After the Matorin, Toa, and Turaga returned to Metru Nui. After the Bohrok failed, a type of villain similar to Bohrok, known as Bohrok-Kal, were unleashed.

Within roughly a year, Makuta regained his full power, and unleashed six Rahkshi, drones driven by Kraata, the embodiments of his essence, nicknamed the "sons of the Makuta". They were created to counter a prophecy of a Toa of Light, which turned out to be the Matoran Takua empowered by the long-lost Mask of Light. In a duel, they ended up forcibly fused, and Takanuva, the Toa of Light's side, won control. A doorway to the island's surface was opened, and Jaller, a fallen comrade of Takua/Takanuva's, was revived. The loss of energy from this was enough to split them, and they were crushed under the door to the outside world. Takakanuva (The Toa of Light) was also revived, from his mask that managed to survive the weight of the door. Makuta has not been seen since, and his status is unknown. It is rumored that the master of shadows will not come back until 2008.

Powers

Makuta has a wide range of powers, and is not to be taken lightly. In addition to his basic dark powers which are enhanced by his mask, he has the following capabilities. His element, which is shadows, can create spheres or beams of shadow energy, which he can project from his staff. Makuta can turn himself into a vortex of shadow that can drain an enemy's life force; he can also accomplish this by shooting a hand of shadow energy from his chest. Makuta uses this hand to absorb Nidhiki, Krekka, and Turaga Dume's pet bird Nivawk to become Ultimante Dume. Its possible he can shoot shadow energy from his fingertips, as Roodaka can. Makuta is capable of creating slug-like beings called kraata, which can corrupt masks, and when exposed to energised protodermis, evolve into Rahkshi. He is capable of controlling those who wear infected (corrupted) masks, although this is less effective on more powerful beings such as toa. He has shapeshifting powers; he can also combine elements of other beings into himself to enhance this power. So far, Makura appears to be immortal, although he has shown a great vulnerability to light energy. He also possesses some spiritual powers, and is known to have manipulated Toa Lhikan's visions. He can telekinetically control solids and liquids, and make one into the other. He can also teleport and become a simple pair of red eyes in the shadows.
