The 2009 Washington Redskins season is the 77th season for the team in the National Football League. They look to improve upon their 8-8 record from 2008. They will play teams from the NFC South and AFC West as per the schedule rotation, as well as their regular games with NFC East rivals.

Schedule

The Redskins' opponents for the 2009 season are based on the NFL's predetermined scheduling formula. In addition to their division opponents, they will play the NFC South, the AFC West, and the fourth-place teams from the remaining two NFC division as follows:

The Redskins released linebacker Marcus Washington on February 20, 2009.[1] The team next released cornerback Shawn Springs.[citation needed] An unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason, Albert Haynesworth, previously with the Tennessee Titans signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins on February 27, 2009. The deal included $41 million guaranteed and could reach $115 million.[2] DeAngelo Hall, another unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason. left the Oakland Raiders and agreed to a new six-year, $54 million contract with the Redskins on February 27, 2009. The deal contained $23 million in guaranteed money and had a maximum value of $55 million.[3] The same day another unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason, Derrick Dockery, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, agreed to a new five-year, $26 million contract with the Redskins. The deal contained $8.2 million in guaranteed money.[4] On March 2, 2009, the Redskins released defensive end Jason Taylor.[5]
