Project help

I actually know a little about horses! Several of my relatives raised Thoroughbreds. I'll be happy to help you (although I'll likely be helping user:jbmurray's students too - I enjoyed assisting with his last project in the spring). Your article is very short (what we call a stub), which means you will have lots of freedom to figure out what the ideal article should look like. I usually browse a few books (or other encyclopedia articles) on the topic and put an outline on the article talk page of what I think the article should include. That helps other interested editors see what needs doing too. Your outline may change as you do more in-depth reading, but it gives you a starting point. I'll keep your talk page and the article watchlisted - feel free to ask questions there or here on my talk page. I'll respond to a comment wherever it is made, so you might want to watchlist my talk page as well. Karanacs (talk) 15:28, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Banker horse

Hiya! Drop me a note to let me know when you're ready for me to take a look again. Regards, — BillC talk 00:03, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! That was, I believe, the first GA article I'd passed. — BillC talk 01:17, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats Yohmom! Great job on the GA. Thanks for giving me the nice award, too! The next step is to talk to Ealdgyth about how to get a peer review. PR is usually the intermediate step prior to FA. If you survive that gauntlet, then you will be well-prepared for FA. (I have an article that's been through two GA reviews, three PRs, Military History review twice and we are still fighting over whether it's ready to go to FA. See Horses in warfare, I've only been working on that one for two freaking years!  ;-P Not like I want to discourage you or scare you or anything! LOL! OTOH, I think Ealdgyth got Go Man Go from nowhere to Main Page featured article in about six months, intersperced with other projects) I don't think the length will be a problem for FA and I think the prose is doing pretty well (HiW gets slapped around for being too long--you can't win!) What PR does is get a set of totally new eyes in there and a lot of the non-horse perspective. I tend to fight for the right to not "dumb down" an article, others just take the comments and make all recommended changes. Your call on that. Anyway, Good luck, and if I can help, let me know! Montanabw(talk) 06:55, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there actually was already a peer review on the article :) That was when I got more involved, after Montanabw recruited me to come take a look! But anyways, I stopped by to say thank you for the Wiki-cookie (even if it's not oatmeal-raisin!), and congrats again on the GA. I would love to see you take the article to FA status, and would be more than willing to help with whatever you need, but that of course is up to you! Dana boomer (talk) 14:54, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking a pre-FA peer review by non-horse people on the new version. But no matter. Montanabw(talk) 21:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. That would probably work, as the PR isn't flooded with other AP Bio entries like it was during the last one. Alternatively, Yohmom, you could plead with Ealdgyth to drop a note for some of her FAC copyediting specialists, to see what they think. Malleus (who has done some work on the article already) is also a good non-horsey eye. Another option is to drop notes on the talk pages of some related Wikiprojects - for example, North Carolina and Mammals - sometimes you get input, sometimes you don't. The best alternative would probably be to do all of the above simultaneously, in order to prepare the best for a FAC. Dana boomer (talk) 21:44, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A+ to ALL

The WikiProject Barnstar
Perhaps what impressed me the most was the collaboration and your understanding of the dynamics of the Wiki community. Congratulations --JimmyButler (talk) 23:04, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you build it - they will come. So true here, with a broad spectrum of assistance from so much talent. I figured that the "horse people" would all pull together. Congratulations to all of you - even those not in my class get an A+ in the grade book. --JimmyButler (talk) 17:52, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This editor is a Novice Editor and is entitled to display this Service Badge.

For time, you are almost a journeyman, but for edits, I had to count your talk page edits too, because they were relevant! 33 more in article space and you will be golden (my typo corrections DO count in my total...LOL) Congrats, ensign! Montanabw(talk) 08:16, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

River Otter GA

Thank you for the congratulatory note. Now its time to throw down! It's party time. I fancy how our class has contended with a university– it's great. I like the notion of cake, a needless temptation...

Best regards, --Wikitrevor (talk) 15:42, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh Trevor...don't kid yourself. --Yohmom (talk) 01:11, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Come back Yohmom!

We love ya, Yohmom! Come back. You CAN find the page numbers, really you can! Besides, this prepares you for real life. You know, the 8x8 cubicle, crummy wages, unappreciative bosses, all the joys of adulthood! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 05:41, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FA is tough Yohmom, but if you manage to steer this article through it'll be a great buzz. Just think; you've written the article on Banker Horses that most Internet users will come across first. You owe it to your readers, and to the ponies you so very obviously love, to give it your best shot. We're only talking about a few page numbers for heavens sake anyway. --Malleus Fatuorum 18:07, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Horse breeds

Hi. I saw your work on Banker horse. Would you like to help improve navigation among the many horse breed articles? See Template talk:Equine. --Una Smith (talk) 17:31, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for dropping a note by, but I'm focusing strictly on the AP Biology Wikiproject. --Yohmom (talk) 01:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Readability Tool

Hello Yohmom.

Thanks for stopping by and showing me the readability tool. It'll definitely come in handy when improving the prose for FA requirements (content be appropriate for average person), so I can gauge the communicability of the content.

Best regards,--Wikitrevor (talk) 00:46, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • By the looks of it, I have some textual simplification to do on NARO. I'll try to compromise the must-have scientific lingo with the regular terminology. Hopefully, the outcome will meet the desired reading range (I read somewhere that it must be 11-12 yr. old friendly). Thank you for the link.

Good day, --Wikitrevor (talk) 16:18, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lucky You

Wow - a copy edit by one of the best c/e persons in Wikiland and a compliment to boot. Trust me --- your list was far shorter than the the numerous long list I agonized over. A visit by Awadewit for even the best of editors on Wikipedia is heaven sent. I am so proud she spoke highly of your efforts and the efforts of a remarkable team that has opted to support you through this assignment! Address the concerns and perhaps ---- consider taking the plunge into FA? --JimmyButler (talk) 19:43, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And this comment "I just kept falling into 'reading' mode instead of 'copyediting' mode ..." is one that many seasoned editors would kill for. The lead does still need some expansion before FAC though. --Malleus Fatuorum 00:30, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As long as she wasn't falling into "sleeping mode," I'm happy.--Yohmom (talk) 00:46, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh joy

Yay, noone has destroyed my article.... yet. In the words of a mysterious man, "Crash and burn dude! Crash and burn!" FoodPuma 01:54, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only if JimmyButler will still "put on a big hat, and marched down the halls blowing a whistle while twirling a baton!" FoodPuma 06:47, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah...you know that he can twirl a baton like no other. He was a professional and the most respected in the International Baton Twirlers Association until the "incident" in 1950. (We shall not speak of that).--Yohmom (talk) 03:39, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
While singing "The Saints Come Marching In". The I.B.T.A. could never prove a thing. Also, A.B. let the dust settle on yours regarding the horse? horses? banker? - best to sit that particular issue out while those with more experience work through consensus. From what little I can grasp; it may be an issue with the horse articles in general. However, continue working on your project! You have attracted the interest of a very capable group of editors - they will work this minor detail out.--JimmyButler (talk) 03:45, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brain ischemia

Hey, I saw that you had visited my article and I was hoping you wouldn't mind answering a question. I had brain ischemia peer reviewed the other day and the person who did it commented on my sources, about how certain paragraphs could have a source at the end of every sentence but is that really necessary to do if they are all from the same source? From my understanding, if all your information came from one source, you put the source at the end.  ? Thanks! --Saunc2011 (talk) 22:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. I'm not positive on this, but I don't think you have to cite a source at the end of every sentence, just for every paragraph. I am wondering though, what information comes from the Chang and Ramirez citations. I think they should be linked within the article? Did this help at all? --Yohmom (talk) 23:53, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm being a TPW on Yohmom's page and jumping in here for a second. Basically, if the entire paragraph comes from the same source, it is usually OK to just put the footnote at the end, but sometimes, if people really find a particular fact to be quite odd, putting in a footnote midway through at the trouble spot, even though duplicative (and annoying) won't hurt anything. If the paragraph has multiple sources, then yeah, footnote things to their source wherever they occur. You don't have to mechanically put a footnote at the end of every sentence, but after each group of facts attributable to the source, be it every sentence, two sentences, three sentences, or paragraph. By the way, User:Ealdgyth is the goddess of footnoting questions, and if she's busy, ask Dana boomer. They both are on top of the issue. Montanabw(talk) 06:29, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, both of you! Your help is greatly appreciated! That's what I thought because it seems to be a little repetitive to put the same source at the end of every sentence, but I don't think the user who peer reviewed my article realized that I put the source at the end. I guess I should just let them know and ask them their opinion also. Yeah, I am not sure what came from the Chang and Ramirez citations either, I think they may just be links to other information, they were there when I began editing. ?
Thank you! Also thank you Montanabw for the names. I will contact them also! --Saunc2011 (talk) 21:42, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it

I think it's good to go. The FA reviewers will, of course, take a hack at it and nitpick some more. You can't anticipate everything. Ealdgyth is a good person to mentor you through that gauntlet (beg her for coaching when you put it up) as I think she now has 6 or 7 GAs to her credit. Montanabw(talk) 01:02, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations

I see Banker horse has made FA! A bot will go through in the next couple of days and update the FAC and ArticleHistory template on the talk page, but it's officially been promoted. Well done for all your hard work! Dr pda (talk) 22:22, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
