The game was released on June 2, 2009 in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the european countries it was released on June 5 2009 , Microsoft Windows version will be released on August 25 2009.[3] The game is the third installment in the Red Faction series.

Gameplay

Red Faction: Guerrilla features a third person perspective, as opposed to the first person perspective used in the two previous Red Faction games. This was changed as Volition believed the third person view allowed for a greater ability to see and appreciate the surroundings as you destroyed them. [4]

In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the protagonist, Alec Mason, will be able to run, jump, hijack vehicles, and use weapons to traverse and free roam across the open world of Mars and fight the EDF (Earth Defense Force). Weapons in the game will include: machine gun turrets, rocket turrets, remote charges, a sledgehammer, machine guns, and many others. A special weapon, the “Grinder”, is a homemade, improvised weapon made by miners that launches charged blades at enemies and objects. There is also a unique weapon called the "reconstructor". It is a multiplayer-only weapon that can be used to rebuild destroyed structures. Originally an April Fool's Day joke, there is a weapon in the game called the "Ostrich Hammer". This is simply an Ostrich being used as a sledgehammer, and is an unlockable reskin of the default Sledgehammer. It was added as an official weapon following considerable fan feedback after the April Fool's video release.

Vehicles will be making a return in the latest iteration of Red Faction. The game includes over 30 vehicles such as: APCs, a 6 wheeler cargo truck, a walking construction mech, a tank, and many others.

In the E3 2008 demo, it was shown that the player may use guns, melee weapons, vehicles, and explosives to destroy nearly every part of the environment, and allows the player to “tear the EDF presence down brick by brick”.

The game will have a radio function, which allows various characters to give Alec information. A two part HUD and a GPS which displays the in-game objectives and orders has been included. There is also an all new, integrated cover system in the game. The game will feature equipable "Backpack" items for the multiplayer mode; ten backpacks have been revealed at the official website under the Multiplayer section, each with differing functions such as healing nearby allies, turning the wearer invisible, or allowing them to see through walls.

Multiplayer

The final version of the game will also have a multiplayer mode, allowing for up to 16 players on a server at once. The player can choose from a number of unlockable characters to represent them in multiplayer. The game will feature six online multiplayer modes along with an offline game mode called Wrecking Crew.

In the Beta (see below) there is an equivalent to Team Deathmatch called Team Anarchy and a Capture The Flag Style game which forces the player to use Geo-Mod's Destructible Environment feature in order to capture different objectives. Multiplayer mode will feature many of the games single-player levels, with locations including the capital city Eos, and Parkers mining outpost.

Along with online Multiplayer, there is an offline only multiplayer game mode known as Wrecking Crew. Wrecking Crew features several different modes, all of which are based around causing as much damage with a set amount of resources (such as ammo, time, or both). At the beginning of the game the players individually pick their own weapon and backpack to start out with, and after each match the person who causes the most destruction chooses the weapon and backpack loadout for the next round.

Plot

Red Faction: Guerrilla takes place in 2228. The Earth Defense Force (EDF), the allies in the original "Red Faction", has become the main antagonist of Guerrilla. The organization has now turned to kidnapping people and putting them in forced work camps for their own profit.

Players assume the command of character Alec Mason, a former miner who rebels against the EDF. Alec is seen wearing a desert army jacket and cargo trousers, and is a man of unknown background. He entered the war against the EDF because of his brother’s murder and has become a part of the newly re-formed Red Faction, whose motto is "Better Red than Dead"/"A Free Mars, or Death!".

Rick White revealed that most of the game will take place on the terraformed surface of Mars, with other locations including the Ultor labs, to pay homage to the first Red Faction.

Development

In February 2008, it was announced the third installment of the Red Faction series was coming to multiple platforms, only basic details were revealed. On July 15, 2008, Rick White, a producer at Volition, debuted a demo at the E3 gaming expo in California (see below). The title was confirmed at the 2008 Game Developers Conference (GDC '08), and in mid-2008, a private multiplayer beta was released on Xbox Live.

Among the details revealed at (GDC '08), were a new and fully upgraded Geo-mod system (Geo-Mod 2.0). It was also confirmed that the game would take place in an open world environment.[5]

A live demo of the game debuted at E3 2008, with narration by Volition producer Rick White. Many of the game's features were presented during the demo. These features include: multiplayer, the upgraded Geo-mod system, new weapons, vehicles, a brief plot preview, among others.

At the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo, a demo of the multiplayer element of the game was shown. The demo showed off the game mode "Team Anarchy", and "Damage Control", as well as some backpacks that the player can equip for certain powers.

In mid-2008, Volition opened a private multiplayer beta to Microsoft to see what needed to be fixed or added. Friends and family codes were sent to survey participants on July 30, 2008. Volition confirmed that IGN had distributed up to 25,000 codes to expand the beta further via paid public membership. Public keys for the Xbox 360 version were released through Fileplanet.

On August 25, 2008, Volition's Community Manager, J Goldberg (V-Singular) announced on the official Red Faction community forums that he was giving away the last few remaining beta keys in his possession. On August 26, 2008, the last Red Faction: Guerrilla Xbox 360 Beta activation key was given away.

The Red Faction: Guerrilla Beta on Xbox Live came to an end on August 29 at 3AM EST.[6]

In February 2008, preview screenshots of Liran were leaked to the Internet, causing members at various game forums to come to consider one weapon shown to be an "Ostrich Hammer" based on its shape. Over one year later, on April Fools Day 2009, Volition released a video commenting on the forum posts, and jokingly implied that the Ostrich Hammer would be a weapon in the game.[7] However, due to the positive response to that video, Volition has announced that there will really be an Ostrich Hammer weapon present in the game.[8][9]. On April 23, a single player demo was released on both the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation Network.A multiplayer demo was released on May 21 on both platforms Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation Network. The multiplayer demo was removed from the Playstation Network soon after it was made available due to problems connecting to games. As of Friday, June 5, it still has not been re-released for download. There has been no official communication from Sony or THQ to let consumers know that it was removed, only comments about the demo's non-functionality.

Collectors Edition

On September 10 of 2008, a Red Faction: Guerrilla Collector's Edition was announced.[10] The package was set to release with the standard game and would have cost $89.99. The collectors edition would have included many bonus items such as:

  • A 5-inch tall, hand painted Mining Walker figurine with real Pewter handrails [11]
  • An exclusive Red Faction: Guerrilla art book
  • A bonus DVD (Xbox 360 version)/Blu-ray disc (PS3 version) (contents unknown)
  • First 4 Figures created a Walker figure as part of a pre-order gift with GAME in the UK

The Red Faction: Guerrilla Collectors Edition is assumed to be cancelled, but various elements that were slated to be included in the Collectors Edition will be available as preorder bonuses from specific stores. [12] Red Faction: Guerrilla is still slated for its June 2, 2009 launch in North America and its June 5, 2009 launch in Europe.[13]
