Parbhani is a city and a municipal council in Parbhani district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Parbhani earlier also known as “ Prabhavatinagar”, is a city in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. It is the administrative headquarters of Parbhani District.

The state capital Mumbai is to the west. Parbhani is well connected by road to other major towns in Maharashtra and the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh, which was previously a part of the Hyderabad State. Parbhani is an important railway junction on the Mumbai-Parbhani-Secunderabad and Parli-Parbhani-Bangalore lines.

Also Parbhani is known by Maratwada Agricultural University. Established in 1972, Marathwada Agricultural University (MAU) Parbhani is one of the four Agricultural universities in state of Maharashtra. The objectives of the University are: Education in agriculture & Allied Sci., Undertake Research based on regional needs and facilitate Technology transfer etc.

Parbhani has its share of Hindu mythology. The Hindu saint who is considered to be the reincarnation of the God Dattatraya in Hindu mythology -- Shri Shirdi SaiBaba was said to be born in this district at a place called Pathri - 40 km from Parbhani. One of the 12 Jotirlinga of the Hindu god Shiva is at Aundha Naganath, 40 km from Parbhani. A Jain temple at Jintur is 40 km away.

There's only a place where Lord Vishnu[Mudgal Nursinha] and Lord Shiva[Mudgaleshwar] are toghter workshiped, in the village named Mudgal, Tq. Patri [Dist. 50km from Parbhani].

Pokharni, a place situated 19 km to the south of Parbhani has a famous Lord Narshima temple.

Geography

Parbhani is located at 19°16′N 76°47′E / 19.27°N 76.78°E / 19.27; 76.78[1]. It has an average elevation of 407 metres (1335 feet).

History

Parbhani languished for over 650 years under Muslim rule, under the Sultans, the Mughals and later the Nizam. The town remained a part of the Hyderabad State under the rulership of the Nizam until Operation Polo of the Indian Army in 1948. Thereafter it became a part of the independent Republic of India. Until 1956 the town remained a part of Hyderabad State within India. Under the administrative reforms that year and the break up of the State of Hyderabad, Parbhani and the adjacent towns were transferred to the multilingual Bombay State.After some time it became a part of Maharashtra state.

Demographics

At the 2001 India census[2], Parbhani had a population of 259,170. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Parbhani has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 59%. In Parbhani, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Parbhani has given Maharashtra, many great sportsmaen.Also there are many facilities to learn many sports like chess,cricket,badminton,tennis,handball,etc. and volley ball Avinash Shivpalsingh thakur form DSM mahavidyaly has represented maharashtra volley ball team for four times and SRTM University for three times under guidence of MR.Shivpalsingh Thakur Father and coach MR.M.A Rizwaan, Parbhani Dist has given more than 35 National Player who has Represented Maharashtra team

Education

Schools

The well-known schools are Bal viddya Mandir ,Gandhi Vidyalaya. Bal Vidya Mandir has four branches in the city. Main branch, Vaibhav Nagar branch, Nanalpeth branch and Ameya nagar branch. Bal Vidya Mandir is Marathi and Semi English School.It also has junior college. vivekanand ,Queen's ,presidence are Engilsh Schools. Queen's Institutional group includes Queen's Junior College,B'ed and D'ed College, vivekanand has junior and senior college etc. Next to it is Shri Sarang Swami Vidyalaya. These are the top schools in the whole Marathwada area for its educational standards and the students passing out. Many of the students passed out from here are serving the nation in various areas like government, banking, army and MNCs. These are one of the most disciplined schools from its beginning. Students are proud to be passed out from these schools.

Marathwada Agricultural University

Apart from Agriculture, MAU provides education in, Home Science, Horticulture, Veterinary, Food Technology & Agriculture engineering. It offers graduate, Post graduate and Ph. D. courses in these fields. MAU has colleges at Ambajogai, Badnapur, Latur & Osmanabad.

Rivers

Godavari is main river in the district.Dudhana and Purna are other sub-rivers of Godavari. The length of the river is 79 km in the district and flows from west to east through Pathri, Gangakhed and Palam talukas and enters in to adjacent Nanded district. A sub river of Godavari, Dudhana flows in Selu, Jintur, Parbhani and Purna talukas and enters to Hingoli district. A Yeldari dam is constructed on Purna river at Jintur taluka of the district.

Tridhara, a place located 12 km from Parbhani has a confluence of 3 rivers.

Places of Interest

Famous:Pathri(Shirdi Sai Baba's Birthplace),Mrutyunjay Pardeshwar Temple(Mercury Shivalinga),Nemgiri in Jintur(holly place of Jain community having historical importance),Hazrat Turabul Haq Shah Dargah,Tridhara(Holy place of saint Omkareshwar).

Transport

One can travel to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Nashik and some major cities directly by train. Parbhani is connected in 2007 by broad gauge railways to Manmad, Latur and Mudkhed, and by metre gauge railway subject to Unigauge gauge conversion to Akola.
