Doodle Jump is a game for the iPhone / iPod Touch developed by Lima Sky. It has been the most-downloaded paid app in 5 countries during various months of 2009: in April, it topped the US; in May, France; in June and July, Austria; and Germany and Spain in August.[1][2]

Gameplay

In Doodle Jump, the goal is to make it as far as one can without dying. Players control Doodler, a four-legged creature who constantly bounces off an unending series of platforms. Players tilt the device from side to side to move Doodler in the desired direction. Players can grab a propeller or a jetpack or bounce on a spring to go faster for a brief time. There are also enemies Doodler has to shoot or jump on top of to eliminate.[3][4][5]

Obstacles

There are a multitude of obstacles Doodler must evade in the game:

  • Monsters – There are 5 different types of monster creatures, which the player must shoot at or jumped on top of in order to not be knocked down and sent to the "Game Over" screen.
  • Boss Monster - This monster is much more difficult to kill than the other monsters and has to be shot 5 times to be killed.
  • UFOs – UFO's abduct Doodler when he jumps underneath them, ending the game. The shield accessory does not protect Doodler against a UFO.
  • Black holes – Black holes are similar to UFO's and monsters, but cannot be destroyed. If Doodler touches one, he is sucked inside and the game ends.

Power ups

  • Jet Pack - Makes you fly up.
  • Propellor hat - Same as jet pack, but not as high.
  • Force Shield - Makes you invulnerable from Monsters for a short time.
  • Spring - Makes you go a short distance up.
  • Trampoline - Same as spring, but the Doodler does a backflip.

Platforms

Players must traverse a range of platforms in Doodle Jump. Each platform has a unique function and reacts differently when the player steps on it.

Color Function
Brown Breaks when jumped on.
Gray Move vertically.
Red & Yellow Exploding.
Blue Move horizontally.
Green Stay still.
Dark Blue with arrows around it Can be moved around by player. Turns into a normal platform when jumped on.
White Disappears after being jumped on.

Scores

During gameplay, the score – indicated at the top left of the screen – increases as Doodler progresses further. There are local, "friends", and global leaderboards built into the game. Players can import friends' scores, publish scores online on Facebook and Twitter, and challenge friends by e-mail.

Easter Eggs

On May 22, 2009, a version of Doodle Jump that allows users to unlock 'Pygmies' from Pocket God (another iPhone game) by changing your name to ooga was released.[6] Elements of both Pocket God and Doodle Jump were incorporated into a tower defence game called The Creeps, made by Super Squawk Software.[7] The creeps monsters also appear where they are the enemies if you change your name to creeps. If you change your name to boo, it gets dark, some enemies change and the Doodler turns into a ghost.
