This is a list of fictional characters found in the anime and manga series Zatch Bell!. One hundred Mamodo (魔物, Mamono, lit. "demon"), children were sent to the human world to take part in the battle to determine the next king of their world. Fighting alongside a human partner, they all have different elements and abilities to assist them in their main goal: burning their opponent's book to reduce the numbers to the final one. The final ten of these Mamodo are known as participants of a special King Festival, of which they learn of the king's ability to change the world to whatever they desire, giving them more incentive to make the final outcome in their favor.

Creation and conception

After Raiku's "Newtown Heroes" series in the Shonen Sunday Super ended, Raiku looked at his old drafts he created in the past for an idea for his next series.[1][2] One of his ideas was about a mercenary who used a giant sword to defeat enemies. After playing with that idea for three months, Raiku decided to abandon it and go with another idea.[1] His next idea was a story where a middle school student, the prototype of Kiyo, finds an old toy that turns into a giant knight that combats evil. After taking this up with his agent, he was advised to use a cuter character to fight and thus, Zatch was created.[1] After Raiku worked on the idea for month, it was published.[1] The reason Zatch uses lightning spells is because "Raiku" means "lightning" in Japanese.[3]

Ponygon's designs were based on a horse.[4]

Protagonists

Kiyo Takamine and Zatch Bell

Zatch Bell (Gash Bell in the Japanese version) and Kiyo Takamine (Kiyomaro Takamine in the Japanese version) are the main protagonists of the series. Their element is lightning. Kiyo is a boy genius with psychic powers who was once aloof and unfriendly, his only companion being a ditsy girl named Suzy Mizuno. He learns respect for others on the day his father, a professor working in England, sends him Zatch, a participant in the fight for the King of the Mamodo World, who has amnesia. Zatch is the son of the enigmatic Mamodo King. Fearing his son would be corrupted by his mysterious hidden power, "Baō", the king has him raised as a low-level Mamodo. He was treated horribly by his stepmother, Yuno, and, upon arriving on Earth, had his memory wiped by his jealous twin-brother, Zeno. Zatch later regained his memories. Zatch's goal is to become a benevolent king who would not force the Mamodo to fight. Together they go on to eliminate many of the participants becoming among the most successful teams and fulfilling Zatch's dream.

Tia and Megumi Oumi

Tia: Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese); Melissa Fahn (English)
Megumi Oumi: Voiced by: Ai Maeda (Japanese); Kate Higgins (English)

Tia (ティオ, Tio) and Megumi Oumi (大 海恵, Ōumi Megumi) are two of Zatch and Kiyo's closest friends and allies during the Mamodo tournament. Tia knows Zatch from the mamodo world, and often acts like a bully towards him. She spends much of her time with Zatch after the battle starts. After being betrayed by her close friend, Maruss, she is found unconscious by Megumi. She is initially weary to trust Megumi after being betrayed, but they soon form a sisterly bond. Megumi is a Japanese teen idol and pop singer, and a master of Judo and Aikido. She holds various concerts and tours, which take up much of her time. She becomes very close to Kiyo as they fight together.

Tia's spells are primarily defensive and regenerative, and their style of combat reflects that. They frequently use shields to protect themselves and their teammates. When fighting alone, their strategy is usually to use defensive spells until their opponent can't cast anymore spells, giving them an opportunity to escape or landing a blow to end the battle. She does gain an offensive spell that forms a boomerang of energy, and a considerably more powerful spell that takes all recent of Tia's bitter experiences and channels them into one strong attack, though the spell is worthless if she is calm.

Kanchomé and Parco Folgore

Kanchomé: Voiced by: Masami Kikuchi (Japanese); Richard Steven Horvitz and Jeff Nimoy (English)
Parco Folgore voiced by: Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi (Japanese); Dave Wittenberg (English)

Kanchomé (キャンチョメ, Kyanchome) and Parco Folgore (パルコ・フォルゴレ, Paruko Forugore) are the main comic relief duo of Zatch's allies. Kanchomé wears a blanket sleeper, has an unusual cone-shaped hairstyle, has bug eyes, and sports a duck bill. His personality tends toward childish and abrasive, often crying and whining like a baby to get whatever he wants; however, he has also shown great determination to protect his friends. Folgore is a superstar and film hero from Milan, Italy, known for his two hit songs "Groping Breasts" ("Hey Hey Let's Dance All Day" in English versions) and "Invincible Folgore." He normally spends his time touring the world, giving concerts, and meeting his fans. In his youth, he desired to be a "lion", a powerful and strong person in body and spirit. This lead to him becoming a violent delinquent who gained everything through brute force and strength. Eventually he was so fearsome that not even his own parents could be around him and kicked him out by forcing him to leave at gun point. After losing everything, his attitude and life style were broken after seeing an image of a bird standing on top of the tooth of a hippopotamus. Seeing the peaceful, yet powerful creature coexisting with the bird became a new inspiration for Folgore, making him choose the path that would lead to his stardom.

Kanchomé and Folgore rarely actually fight; they focus on deception and confusion with the help of Kanchomé's shape shifting and ability to create illusion. They constantly run from their opponents while being beaten down, though they always attempt to protect each other. Kanchomé's initial spell allows him to transform into any shape, though he cannot actually operate as a inanimate object. Other spells include being able to shrink down to an extremely small size and burn books by sneaking up on the wielder, creating the illusion that he has grown into an invincible giant, creating various copies strengthened by positive emotions, fooling opponents into thinking their spells are nullified, and fooling opponents into believing that their own attacks are being used against them, causing their minds to inflict damage to their bodies. His ultimate spell allows him to trap opponents in a illusionary world that is impossible to escape.

Ponygon and Kafk Sunbeam

Ponygon: Voiced by: Satomi Koorogi (Japanese); Dave Wittenberg (English)
Kafk Sunbeam: Voiced by: Hozumi Gouda (Japanese); Henry Dittman (English)

Ponygon known in Japan as Umagon (ウマゴン, lit "Horse Monster"), whose real name is Schneider (シュナイダー, Shunaidā), is small horse mamodo with the personality of a dog, though he bleets like a sheep in order to communicate. He is a close friend of Zatch, having known him in the Momodo World, and stays with Zatch and Kiyo while searching for his human partner. As he cannot communicate directly with others, he is given the nickname Ponygon, though he constantly tries to tell others of his real name. After searching for a long period of time, he finally meets his partner, Kafk Sunbeam (カフカ・サンビーム, Kafuka Sanbīmu), an engineer from Germany working on projects in Japan. Sunbeam likes to use the word "groovy", and often uses lingo like "dude", "Rock n Roll", and "cool." Ponygon's spells grant him armor that increases his speed and power, and gives him control over fire. His most powerful armor gives flight capabilities and a large horn.

Wonrei and Li-en

Wonrei: Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese); Crispin Freeman (English)
Li-en: Voiced by: Haruna Ikezawa (Japanese); Gwendoline Yeo (English)

Wonrei (ウォンレイ, Wonrei) and Li-en (リィエン, Rīen) are one of the main ally teams. Their abilities center around Martial Arts. Li-en, a young Chinese girl who wanted a boyfriend more than anything, and took to overeating when her father, a Mafia boss named Li-Akron, would not let her see anyone, met Wonrei in a restaurant and was immediately smitten with him. Throughout the series, they have a more romantic relationship with each other than the other Mamodo pairs. Wonrei's martial arts training allowed him to gain a large amount of spells without fighting many Mamodo. When Li-Akron found out about the relationship, he imprisoned Wonrei and the book in his hideout, believing him to be a demon. Zatch and Kiyo help reunite Wonrei and Li-en, and the two return the favor by assisting them in the fight against Demolt and Tsao-Lon, two of the most powerful Ancient Mamodo.

In the anime, Wonrei was defeated by Rodeaux and Chita, in an attempt to protect everyone, and most importantly, Li-en. In the manga, Wonrei is sent back by Megumi (at Li-en's request, so that he would be sent back to the Mamodo world before a bomb blew up) after protecting Li-en, Megumi and Tia from an explosion caused by Unko Tin Tin.

Brago and Sherry Belmont

Brago: Voiced by: Kazunari Kojima (Japanese); Wally Wingert (English)
Sherry Belmont: Voiced by: Fumiko Orikasa (Japanese); Saffron Henderson and Karen Strassman (English)

Brago (ブラゴ, Burago) and Sherry Belmont (シェリー・ベルモンド, Sherī Berumondo) are rivals of Zatch and Kiyo. Brago has a rough, antisocial attitude, and he hates the fact that he needs a human partner. Sherry comes from an abusive background in a wealthy French family, raised by a mother who only cared about the family name. One day, depressed at not being able to see meaning in her existence acting merely on the will of her mother, Sherry attempts to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge, but was saved and befriended by a poor girl named Koko, and Sherry, thus, has a vendetta against the evil Zofis, who corrupted Koko. She searches her and when she fights her, she is at first crushed at the thought of fighting Koko. Brago encourages her to keep fighting and together, along with everybody's help, they manage to get Koko back to normal and destroy Zofis's book.

Sherry and Brago focus on overwhelming their opponents with brute strength. Brago's sheer power combined with Sherry's focused determination give them extreme aptitude, often holding their own without spells. Brago can easily knock away bulldozers and take high level spells directly, and Sherry actively uses a mace-like staff to attack human opponents. Brago's spells utilize "gravity" that can either be shot in the form of purple orbs or released as a large gravitational field. He can also create highly condensed orbs directly around opponents, and power up his own body.

Antagonists

Zofis and Koko

Zofis: Voiced by: Toshiko Fujita (Japanese); Susan Silo (English)
Koko: Voiced by: Chinami Nishimura (Japanese); Lara Jill Miller (English)

Zofis (ゾフィス, Zofisu) and Koko (ココ) are the main antagonists of the Milordo-Z arc of the series as well as Sherry and Brago's main rivals in the tournament. Born to a poor family in France, Koko befriended Sherry at a young age after saving her from suicide in a river. Though they are very close, Koko resents Sherry's wealth, which creates a deep repressed jealousy of her. Zofis manages to bring these feelings to the forefront in order to brainwash her and create an obedient partner. Sherry makes it her goal to defeat Zofis and restore her friend's true nature. After Zofis is defeated, he admits that he implanted a split personality full of hate in order to have an invincible partner. He says that if Sherry burns the book, Koko will not only return to normal, but as a "present" he will leave all of the bitter memories of Koko destroying her village and all of the other bad things she did. Brago forces Zofis to erase Koko's memory by assuring Zofis that if he refuses, he will live in perpetual fear of Brago in the Mamodo world. Koko is eventually back to normal and although her memories are erased, says she knows that Sherry had saved her during the time she was unconscious (the part about being unconscious for several months is a lie to prevent her from knowing the truth). Zofis's book is also burned by Sherry.

Unlike most Mamodo, who chose to fight for themselves, Zofis, going as "Milordo-Z", decides to release petrified Mamodo from the previous battle to use as pawns. He brainwashes descendants of their original partners in order to fully utilize them. Zofis uses the magic of the Moonlight Stone to control the Ancient Mamodo with fear. The Stone had the power to control minds and create illusions, and through it he convinces the mamodo that he can return them to stone at any time. In battle, Zofis' spells cause explosion upon impact. He can also use a shard of the stone in order to create a barrier.

Faudo

Faudo (ファウード, Faūdo) makes his first appearance as a massive tower that appears in the human world near the coast of New Zealand. This gigantic mamodo is actually sealed away inside the structure. A tremendous amount of power is needed to break the lock and set him free. Faudo is controlled by the one who possesses his jewel. Faudo's size is so great that the surrounding mountains wouldn't even come up to his knees. He is also said to be larger than Mt. Fuji.

Note: Although it is a Mamodo weapon, it cannot fight independently in the Mamodo fight. It can be manipulated by those who control the jewel, such as used by both Riou and Zeno. Without the influence of another mind, it will attack and destroy everything in its path.

Riou and Banikis Gigo

Riou (リオウ, Riō) is the main antagonist of the first part of the Faudo arc. Before he left for Earth, Riou was told by his father to use Faudo to his advantage in winning the kingship and provided with a jewel that would let him control Faudo. Assembling a cabal of like-minded Mamodo and using a death curse to bend good Mamodo to his will, Riou was provided with all the "dioga" level spells he needed to release Faudo. After a slight setback resulting from the loss of Buzarai, Riou blackmailed Zatch into replacing him in the cult. After Zatch and a large amount of Mamodo, including several former members of his cult, came after him, Riou retreated into the tower, isolating Zatch and Kiyo from the rest of the group and facing them himself.

It is then revealed that Riou's bookkeeper is Banikis Gigo (バニキス・ギーゴー, Banikisu Gīgō), who had been hiding in the mouth on Riou's chest, and that his powers are based on beasts spells, similar to the final spells of many Mamodo but in the forms of animals like three headed lions. Using these spells, they deal Zatch a crushing defeat (though not without taking heavy damage himself), even killing Kiyo. However, the diabolical Mamodo is soon brought down by an even more powerful foe, Zeno, who subsequently takes the command of Faudo.

  • Anime: Riou's role is generally the same in the anime as in the manga, however, in the anime, he defeats Earth and outlasts all of his minions but Kiees and Purio.

Zeno Bell and Dufort

Zeno: Voiced by: Urara Takano (Japanese); Debi Derryberry (English)
Dufort: Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa (Japanese); Dave Wittenberg (English)

Zeno Bell (ゼオン・ベル, Zeon Beru, "Zeon Bell") in the Japanese version and English manga) and Dufort (デュフォー, Dufō) are Zatch's main antagonists for a major portion of the Mamodo Fight. Zeno is Zatch's twin brother, who was forced to undertake harsh, military training, while he believed his brother simply lived an easy life after inheriting their father's "Baō" ability. He seeks to win the battle and force misery upon Zatch. Dufort is a silent young man who was sold for scientific experimentation by his mother. He develops psychic abilities while undergoing experiments, and after escaping, he teams up with Zeno. The anime features his powers as a natural ability that caused him to be locked up, experimented on, and abused.

Many of Zeno's spells are the same as Zatch's, though more powerful due to training. He fires his spells from his palm instead of through his mouth, and does not lose consciousness like Zatch does. Along with electrical blasts, Zeno can also create a large blade made of lighting, multi-turret gun that shoots several blasts, a fully controllable buzzsaw-like projectile, and a massive winged being that shoot multiple bolts. His cloak also has magical abilities, allowing him to shield and teleport Dufort and himself. He also takes control of the giant mamodo, Faudo, using a special jewel. Dufort possesses an ability known as "Answer Talker", which allows the user to understand how any attack is applied and how to defend against it. This awakens whenever a human "dies and then returns to life."

Clear Note and Vino

Clear Note (クリア・ノート, Kuria Nōto) and Vino (ヴィノー, Vinō) are the main antagonists of the King Festival Arc. Clear compares himself to a nuclear bomb and wishes to erase both the Mamodo World and the Earth World. Vino is a small baby, who is protected by a floating bubble that cuts Clear's power by half. He is able to speak in full sentences and he is very sadistic in nature. He is supposedly the ultimate partner, as his lack of physical strength and stamina is replaced by a limitless supply of "heart energy."

Clear Note's spells are based on the power of Annihilation. His defensive spells are able to nullify or crush the spells of his opponents. His attack spells likewise are able to crush or weaken his opponents. He changes forms numerous times, with his final spell transforming him into a gigantic beast with the power to destroy a planet.

In the last chapter, Zatch reveals that Shin Beruwan Bao Zakeruga destroyed Clear's evil personality and caused him to reincarnate as a Mamodo named White, and only Zatch knows this.

Other characters

Suzy Mizuno

Suzy Mizuno (水野 鈴芽, Mizuno Suzume, Suzume Mizuno) is a close friend and schoolmate of Kiyo. She has a crush on him, and is jealous of other girls that Kiyo spends time around, more notably Megumi and Shion. She is a self-proclaimed klutz and often gets sidetracked from the original task at hand. Suzy freely admits that she has trouble with various academic subjects, particularly mathematics. Her favorite hobby is to draw faces on fruits and other round objects to express her feelings. In the English version of the series, Suzy is voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. In the Japanese version, Suzume is voiced by Tomoko Akiya.

Keith and Berun

Keith (キース, Kīsu) and Berun (ベルン) are members of the Faudo cult. They are voiced by Kenyu Horiuchi and Satoshi Taki, respectively. Keith constantly smokes cigars and often makes his entrances singing a gibberish version of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ode to Joy. He carries a walking stick that doubles as a baton, which he tends to wave about randomly while he sings. Berun wears a red ball on his nose, similar to a clown, although when he is happy, it opens up into a flower.

Keith's powers are based around the manipulation of lasers. The most basic spell of his that is seen is Ganzu Ginisu[5], which he uses to shoot at the people parachuting out of Apollo's plane. Throughout his fight with Zatch and Kanchomé, he displays several other spells[6][7][8], such as Gigano Ginisu (which creates a mass of light beams), Am Garuginis, (which launches his spring-like fists with a green light around them), and Go Garuginis (Which causes his body to spin in an energy tornado). In the manga, he has several others; Doruginisu (which creates a drill around his hand), Vargas Giniskan (which creates a large amount of ricocheting lasers)[9], and Kiron Ginisu (a double shot of Gigano Ginisu)[10]. His strongest spell in all versions is Dioga Ginisudon[11].

Kolulu and Lori

Kolulu (コルル, Koruru) and Lori (しおり, Shiori, "Shiori") are one of the most influential and important teams in the tournament due to their sacrifice and their influence of Zatch's reason for battle. Their ability is a claw and fist influenced transformation style. Kolulu is a kind Mamodo girl who was one of the last children to find her partners. Her partner, Lori, discovers her alone on a rainy night around Mochinoki and takes her in and immediately makes her family, trying to make herself a more caring, nurturing mother compared to the lack of attention she received from her own family. She is also one of the first Mamodo to immediately know of Zatch from her time in the Mamodo World. However, their good times end when Lori discovers Kolulu's book, reciting a spell that transforms her into a nightmarish alternate personality that only cares about fighting and winning the tournament, programmed into her since she never normally would want to fight. After Zatch is forced to fight against her bad personality, she voluntarily chooses to go back to the Mamodo World to stop herself from hurting any more people. Her final words, about the desires for a kind, generous king that would stop the battles the Mamodo are forced to do, become the pillar for Zatch's reasons in the tournament for the remainder of the series. Kolulu returns to help Zatch and Kiyo in their battle against Clear Note, offering him use of a spell that protects them from any harmful effects.

  • Anime: Shortly before Zatch and Kiyo fight Rops and Apollo, Lori makes a brief appearance and leaves saying, "Sorry, I have to go shopping with my mom." It can be implied that because of Kolulu's encouragement, Lori has developed a much better relationship with her mother (it is unclear if it is also the same with her father but it is most likely the same).

Japanese voice actors: Kolulu – Houko Kuwashima, Shiori – Yuka Imai

English voice actors: Kolulu – Kate Higgins, Lori – Philece Sampler

Rops and Apollo

Rops (ロップス, Loppusu) and Apollo (アポロ, Aporo) are an enigmatic early opponent in the fight for Mamodo King. Their ability is the manipulation of ropes and chains. Born the heir to an American business company, Apollo initially chose to ignore his duties and instead travel the world, going wherever the wind takes him. Encountering the ladybug-like Mamodo along the way, the two became best friends and traveling partners. Although Apollo hated fighting, he would still use Rops' abilities and his own physical and instinctual skills when faced with another Mamodo who wanted to face them for the kingship. When their journey take them to Japan, they easily befriend Kiyo and Zatch, yet themselves learn about the continued need to fight, including Rops' own dream of becoming Mamodo king. Yet the journey would come to a tragic end in Holland, where Rops is cruelly sent back by Zeno merely for mistaking him for his twin brother. After Rops' return, Apollo returned home to run his company, yet still provided the money and support to assist Kiyo and Zatch to prevent anyone evil from reaching the kingship.

Japanese Voice Actors: Ropes – Mika Kanai, Apollo – Toshihiko Seki

English Voice Actors: Rops – Michelle Ruff, Apollo – Michael Lindsay

Danny and Mr. Goldo

Danny (ダニー, Danī) and Mr. Goldo (ゴルドー, Gorudō) are a team who appear similar to father and son as well as business partners. As much as Danny cares about his bookkeeper, he really can't stand the fatherly way he is treated, particularly with the consistent nickname of Danny-Boy (due to still being immature in his attitude). The duo come to Japan as the guardians of the Shemila Statue, a precious piece of artwork nearly stolen by criminals under their watch. Yet while Danny possesses the natural physical strength of a Mamodo and fighting ability, his only spell is a rejuvenation one that allows him to keep fighting even after getting hurt. After he and Zatch finally get the statue back, an accident forces Danny to protect the statue from getting crushed, yet at the same time forces him to make Zatch use his abilities to destroy the object at the cost of getting his book burned. This action forces Goldo to finally accept Danny's maturity as he is sent back.

Danny reappears towards the end of the Clear Note arc, offering Zatch the use of his Jioruk healing spell. He is the first mamodo to appear when Zatch's book turns gold.

Japanese Voice Actors: Danny – Kappei Yamaguchi, Mr. Goldo – Iemasa Kayumi

English Voice Actors: Danny – Yuri Lowenthal, Mr. Goldo – Jeff Nimoy

Purio and Lupa

Purio: Voiced by: Michiru Yamizaki (Japanese); Sam Riegel (English)
Lupa: Voiced by: Chihiro Sakurai (Japanese); Dorothy Elias-Fahn (English)

Purio (パピプリオ, Papipurio, "Papipurio") and Lupa (ルーパー, Rūpā) are one of the most cowardly and lucky teams fighting in the Mamodo fight. Purio is an arrogant, bratty Mamodo in princely clothes. He attempts to use his appearance to show a strong front, despite being extremely weak. Lupa sees Purio as a replacement for her deceased son, so she does whatever she can to protect and shield him from pain. She also has a crazy afro hairdo from 1970's and has a funny looking face. Realizing their own weakness and cowardice early on, Purio and Lupa are forced to team up with other, stronger Mamodo to keep them in the tournament. Purio's assist spells, such as spewing a glue-like substance, paralyzing poison, toxic smoke, oil, and an unbreakable net from his mouth, help in these double battles. He also gains the ability to spit acid in large quantities. When he first meets Tia, he develops a crush on her and says "Well, aren't you the cutest little thing! Say, how about after I'm king I make you my favorite girlfriend out of the hundred or so I plan to have?"

In the manga, after the Faudo arc, Purio and Lupa retreat from the Mamodo Fight, and Purio becomes a child star. However, they are hunted down by Gomu and Mir. Purio attempts to fight off Gomu, but is easily overpowered. Eventually Kanchomé jumps in with his newfound abilities to help defeat Gomu, but in the end all three mamodo end up befriending each other. Both Purio and Kanchomé's books are burned by a surprise attack by Clear Note and Vino shortly after the battle.

Bari and Gustav

Vincent Bari (ヴィンセント・バリー, Vinsento Barī) and Gustav (グスタフ, Gusutafu) are a super-strong rival team of the tournament. Their ability is vortexes. Obsessed with proving his own strength drawn from a long rivalry with Mamodo school classmate Kiees, Bari initially fights one Mamodo opponent after another to eliminate them, yet can never get over his own fighting obsession and goes on without purpose or meaning. Hearing about Zatch from another opponent, Bari heads to Japan hoping to get the battle that he needs to get over this irritation, but causes more trouble by attacking everyone in his way and forcing Zatch to both fight to save others as well as fight this Mamodo warrior. Although Zatch nearly fails against him, his own resolve and feelings to become a kind king finally forces Bari to realize his own dream, to become an undefeated "strong king", giving his bookkeeper relief that Bari may finally be finding his own way. Bari is also the first mamodo to overwhelm Zatch and Kiyo in terms of raw power.

In episode 92 it was revealed that Dr. Riddles asks Bari to help him battle the ancient mamodo but declined because Zatch was also going to help Dr. Riddles. Continuing his own journey, Bari soon faces similar odds against another extremely powerful Mamodo, the dragon Erzadoru who utterly dominates Bari in the beginning. Using his own resolve and feelings, Bari is able to defeat the monstrous opponent but takes massive damage in the process, Erzadoru, for this feat, congratulates Bari on this victory. Soon hearing that Keith joined the Faudo cult, Bari rushed to the massive tower and stormed inside, hoping to finish his rival once and for all. Using all he learned to become a strong king, Bari finally defeats Keith by destroying his book. Yet as a final act, his opponent placed a trap keeping Bari locked away from the rest of the team. Zatch attempts to disarm the trap at the cost of his own life while asking Bari to be the one to defeat Zeno. However, Bari decides that it is Zatch who should defeat Zeno. Bari gives his life instead to allow all the others to pass. To prevent his death, Gustav allows Sunbeam to burn Bari's book.

In between Bari and Zatch's second meeting, Bari has undergone multiple battles and has receives numerous permanent scars. He has even lost one of his horns. His biggest battle was with one of the legendary dragon brothers, Elzador (the weaker of the two). Elzador was originally of the four demon children who only adults could beat. The others being Zeno, Brago, and Elzador's brother Ashuron. Elzador is the one who gave Bari his scars; however, Bari rose triumphant. (Chapter 239 page 4).

  • Anime: As in the manga, Bari arrives at Faudo in search of Keith. Both he and Keith survive in the anime, however.

Japanese voice actors: Bari – Ryotaro Okiayu, Gustav – Unshou Ishizuka

English voice actors: Bari – Wally Wingert, Gustav – Crispin Freeman

Kido and Dr. Riddles

Kido: Voiced by: Akemi Okamura (Japanese); Brianne Siddall (English)
Dr. Riddles: Voiced by: Rokuro Naya (Japanese); Quinton Flynn (English)

Kido (キッド, Kiddo, Kedo in the VIZ manga) and Dr. Riddles (ナゾナゾ博士, Nazonazo Hakase) are a mamodo team that allies with Zatch and Kiyo to battle Milordo-Z. Kido is a lanky child mamodo who wears a blue jumpsuit with a K on it. He is childish and cocky, but also very gullible, believing any lie that Riddles tells him. Dr. Riddles is a former medical doctor who gave up his practice after he failed to save his grandson during surgery, and took on Kido because he reminded him of the child. He is very intelligent, and claims to know everything, although he is clearly exaggerating. He enjoys teasing Kido by telling him tall tales and then revealing later that he was "just kidding", eliciting shocked reactions from Kido. In one of their most important battles, however, Kido began to act like Dr. Riddles when devising clever plans and matures as a person. Kido's book is burned during the Devolo Ruins battles, but Dr. Riddles continues to give Zatch and the others information, and is crucial in the fight against Faudo.

Kido's spells involve weapons and changing the size of his body parts. His basic spells allow him to fire lasers from his mouth, shoot rocket fists, and detach his upper half from his lower half. His ultimate spell creates a giant mechanical goddess.

Penny and Uri

Penny (パティ, Pati, "Patty") and Uri (ウルル, Ururu, "Uluru") are a major enemy team during the "Milordo-Z" arc of the manga, particularly due to Penny's own feelings towards Zatch. Their ability is water. Proclaiming herself as Zatch's girlfriend, she had been in love with him since discovering him fishing in a private beach in the Mamodo World, ultimately trying any means possible merely to interact with him. Upon arriving in the human world, she made partners with Uri, a poor man trying to get food for his family under one condition: she would help him out in any way possible as long as he helped her find Zatch. Yet when she finally tracks Zatch down to Japan, Penny discovers the hard way about Zatch's lost memories, going absolutely berserk and forcing herself to fight him either to make him remember their (one-sided) love or to eliminate him from the tournament. Zatch proved his strength against Penny, but she is ultimately saved by the actions of Byonko moments before getting blasted by Zatch's Bao Zakeruga, allowing Uri to escape with both of them.

After escaping, Penny meets with Byonko's boss, the evil "Milordo-Z" (Zofis) who offers her the chance to help him control the ancient Mamodo and win the tournament. Seeing this as means to get revenge on Zatch, Penny takes the offer and leads a squadron of Ancient Mamodo into battle. But over time, she discovers her new servants lack the free will or abilities to fight for themselves and doubts the decisions she made. When Zatch and his allies appear hopeless fighting Demolt of the Four Supreme Mamodo, she and Byonko finally turn against their master, with Penny destroying the sustaining Moon Stone assisting the enemy with her So Giaku while getting her book burned. Her final wish while being sent back is for Zatch and the others to forgive and play with them when they return to the Mamodo world.

Byonko and Alvin

Byonko (ピョンコ, Pyonko) and Alvin (アルヴィン, Aruvin) are Zofis' first assistant duo for his Ancient Mamodo alongside Penny. Their abilities are slime-based. A grumpy old man trying to live out the rest of his life in peace, Alvin is thrusted with the frog Mamodo after believing the four-leaf clover on his head was lucky, he picked one of the leaves. (turning it into a permanent three-leaf clover) Yet Byonko himself is obsessed with the simple matters in life, particularly finding and making new friends. Easily befriending Zofis, he assists in collecting the Ancient Mamodo (still locked away in stone) for him to revive as his servant, believing them to be new friends. However, Alvin realized the true evil intentions of the Mamodo who called himself Milordo-Z, choosing either to not help out on Byonko's missions or not wearing his dentures so all of his spells would intentionally be mumbled and not cast. By the time Byonko straightens himself out to help against Demolt, Alvin finally puts his dentures into his mouth and casts his spells to assist Penny in destroying the Moon Stone, even at the cost of his own book. While fading away, he asks Penny if, after he goes back to the Mamodo world, Zatch and his friends would play with him.

Ted (テッド, Teddo) and Jido (ジード, Jīdo) are a physical fighting duo with a unique set of spells. Their abilities is physical upgrades, however, their spells are interlinked between one another, only upgrading up one after another like the movement of gears in a car. Although taking part in the tournament, Ted's personal purpose is not just to win but to search down the female Mamodo Cherish, his former protector in the Mamodo world. Although Ted is friendly, he can be set off easily due to his competitive spirit and his desire to fight. After initially befriending Zatch, he ends up defending him from Arth, believing him as an enemy wanting to take him down. Eventually, Ted tracks Cherish down as a member of the Faudo cult, but by this point she is bound both by the penalties of current tower controller Zeno and his minion Gyaron, forcing her to fight against him against her will. After a hard fought battle where he is finally able to reignite the fire within Cherish and make her defy Zeno's will, Ted sacrifices himself and his book to eliminate Gyaron.

  • Anime: Although arriving at Faudo and fighting Cherish like in the manga, the duo are forced to fight against the tower's Heart Guardian, leading to Cherish being sent back and Ted ultimately surviving the Faudo assault. Also, Zatch meets Ted before Koral Q in the anime.

Also, have a natural ability is the sword Arth used can absorb other manodo energy when get hit or touched. Arth is a Mamodo who appears like a living armor and descended from a long line of peacekeepers. He hopes that when he becomes the Mamodo King, he can write up laws that will bring about peace and stability. He initially encounters his partner living in a Finnish hospital. But because she was a small girl living with a terminal illness, Ellie initially refuses Arth's request, believing that she would die in the midst of the battle to be king making him vulnerable. However when witnessing another Mamodo attacking the defenseless Arth, Ellie finally takes up his book and sides with him in the fight. Although small and young, Ellie is wise beyond her years and is capable of great strategies while Arth knows of many of the legends of the Mamodo world. Arth and Ellie's relationship is notably similar to that between a master and servant (at Arth's request).

Initially encountering Zatch with knowledge of the threat of the awakening Faudo Tower, Arth and Ellie test them to discover the power of the legendary Baō spell, which they understood were key both to awaken and ultimately defeat the massive Mamodo. However, Riou still uses the duo to his own advantage, placing his curse on Ellie and subsequently reawakening her disease. Due to this, Arth, as well as Zatch, play along in using their spells to wake Faudo. But after lifting the seal, Arth soon helps in the effort to eliminate the tower, working with Karudeio to destroy the Heart Guardian and set the controls for return.

After Faudo's defeat, Arth and Ellie were one of the ten remaining Mamodo teams in the King Festival. Because of the strain suffered during the battle of Faudo, Ellie's illness worsened. Coupled with the discovery of a cure, Arth wishes to depart for Ellie's survival, much to her dismay. Soon after, they were the first team targeted for sendback by the beetle Mamodo Goomu. Because Ellie's illness gave them a disadvantage, they were ultimately defeated. As Arth fears for his possible death by the King's power, Ellie reassures him that Zatch and his allies are still in the competition, and that she will plead with Zatch to allow him to live and become his law advisor. After sharing one last hug, Arth returns to the Mamodo world feeling certain he will be revived. Arth ranked 10th place in the fight overall.

Arth is one of the mamodo who appears to Zatch when his book becomes gold during the fight with Clear Note.

Riya and Aleshie

Riya (リーヤ, Rīya) and Aleshie (アリシエ, Arishie) are a pair first seen as enemies in the Faudo cult. Riya's powers involve his own body which he uses to stretch his horn and arms, to give him various physical upgrades, to enlarge himself to protect others even fire lasers from his chest. Aleshie came from an African village, where his constant duties of delivering water back to the village toughened up his physical and mental abilities. They are, however, very reluctant to be there; they were shoehorned in by a threat to kill a child by Raushin Mo and kept in line by Riou's curse. They are the first of the cultists to turn to Zatch's side, upon the arrival of Zatch and his allies, whereafter they suggested an exploration inside Faudo for a device that can possibly send the giant Mamodo back. As they are beset by Zaruchimu and Wonrei at Faudo's liver, Riya and Aleshie held them off so Zatch and the others can continue the exploration. They are then recaptured and forced to help unlock the tower.

When the curse is broken, they join the fight against Riou, Zeon and their followers, attempting to get their revenge on Zaruchimu and Raushin on the first floor of Faudo's neck. Riya sends back Fango, but is in turn sent back by Zaruchimu, although he stays long enough to see Zaruchimu himself get sent back by Ponygon and Sunbeam.

Japanese voice actors: Riya – Kotono Mitsuishi, Aleshie – Tomokazu Seki

Karudio and Sauza

Karudio (カルディオ, Karudio) and Sauza (サウザー, Sauzā) are one of the ally teams during the Faudo arc. Their ability is ice armor and natural ability, speed. Another horse Mamodo like Ponygon, Karudio was first introduced as a rival for the fire horse. At some point in the past, the team was ambushed by two allied Mamodo named Snail and Maraion. Although they were defeated, the battle left them with a negative prejudice regarding "teamwork".

Like Ponygon, Karudio also seems to only speak in animal sounds (Paru Paru Mon), yet Sauza seems to know his real name somehow. Karudio is one of the few mamodo who can understand Ponygon and knows his real name, but he can't communicate it to anyone else. During their first confrontation in Hokkaido, Sauza mocked Ponygon's reliance on his allies after Karudio smelled their scent on Ponygon. After Ponygon learned his third spell, and the match ended in a draw. Sauza and Sunbeam became friends, though Ponygon and Karudio continue to hate each other.

Karudio and Sauza appear again during the Faudo crisis, seemingly on the cult's side, but actually attempting to assist Arth and Ellie, who they befriended after Ellie was cursed by Riou. Calling a truce with Zatch's group, Arth and Karudio ran off to use a device in Faudo's chest to send him back to the Mamodo world. They get into a fight with the Heart Guardian all the while defending the device. The battle proved difficult, partly due to Karudio refusal to work in synchrony with Arth. After much convincing from Ellie, the battle took a better turn until the monster organ utilises his fire abilities. In the end, Karudio launches a suicide attack on the Heart Guardian by freezing from the inside out using his strongest spell Diō Gikoru Gidoruku. Karudio survived the attack however, as Sauza allowed one of the Guardian's flames to strike their book prior to the attack, allowing Karudio to return to the Mamodo world before he becomes completely frozen.

  • Anime: Karudio assists Ponygon in fighting off and sending back Fango and Jedun, and manages to survive and evacuate out of Faudo.

Japanese voice actors: Karudio – Yuji Ueda, Sauza – Kumiko Watanabe

Cherish and Nicole

Cherish (チェリッシュ, Cherisshu) and Nicole (ニコル, Nikoru) are a team caught within the cult of Riou and Faudo tower. Their ability is crystals. Cherish was a brave, older Mamodo girl who lead and protected a group of orphan Mamodo children from the many dangers and bullies within the Mamodo world. One of these children, Ted, was particularly inspired by Cherish's actions and strived to be as brave as she was in the face of danger. When the duo both were sent to the human world, Ted went in search of her while Cherish partnered with female game warden Nicole, who chose to hide her appearance to look like a boy during most of the tournament.

Needing assistance to the awakening of Faudo, Riou places his curse upon Nicole, forcing Cherish to fight for him at the risk of her partner's life. After an initial fight with Tia and Ponygon, Cherish used her Dioga Kofarudon spell to assist in awakening the massive Mamodo. Yet while she thought she would be free after Riou's fall, Zeno's takeover of Faudo forced her to continue serving the enemy. As part of a team on the second floor towards Faudo's brain, Zeno indirectly controlled her through his servant Gyaron, shocking her with electricity whenever she rebelled. As Ted arrived to save her, Cherish finally stood up against Gyaron and Zeno while watching the boy Mamodo's sacrifice. Eventually, she would assist Zatch's team against Zeno, sacrificing her own book to him while using her sniping spell Gurādo Ma Kofaru to release the mamodo that Zeno had been holding captive.

  • Anime: Choosing to stay on Riou's side even after waking Faudo, Cherish is forced to fight Ted on her own before sacrificing herself against the Heart guardian. Considering she remained in her disguise through the end of the anime, Nicole's gender remains unknown.

Japanese voice actors: Cherish - Ai Nagano, Nicole - Sayaka Aida

Momon and Elle Chivas

Momon (モモン, Momon) and Elle Chivas (エル・シーバス, Eru Shībasu) are a major ally team during the Faudo crisis. Elle is a nun who has a habit of muttering "Oh My" during any crisis, and Momon is a perverted Mamodo first introduced as a rival for Tia (he resembles a human monkey with rabbit ears). By using his spell powers of trickery (or as Kiyo calls them Running away powers), Momon is able to easily subdue Tia in annoying ways that also allow him to look at her underwear. Momon's bothersome behavior soon infuriates Tia, and her anger unlocks her sixth spell, Chajiru Saifodon, which she uses to defeat Momon. Momon and Elle make friends with Zatch's group after this incident. Momon has the ability to sense other Mamodo and apparently how powerful they are as he is clearly terrified of Faudo's tower when he is forced to lead the protagonists to it. Another odd trait about Momon become apparent whenever he lies, verbally or otherwise; whenever Momon lies, the part of his mouth just below his nose will stretch downwards (though his nose too will stretch) and will only retract when he finally tells the truth.

Momon and Elle provide support to Zatch, Tia, Kanchome, and Ponygon during the assault on Faudo tower, although due to Momon's cowardly nature, he spends most of his time running away. He finally shows his true potential during the fight in the control room, in which he gains two spells at once, Mimiruo Mifanon and Fei Miruruku. Using these spells, Momon is able to subdue Rodeaux, but the battered winged Mamodo retaliates with an underhanded attack that destroys Momon's book. Momon stays just long enough to see his plan come to fruition; he was a distraction the entire time, intending to keep Rodeaux and Jedun busy until Kiyo awakened. In their last moments, Momon promises Elle that when he returns to the Mamodo World, he will break his perverted habits, as well as study hard to become as smart as Kiyo. Elle, on the other hand, is proud that even to the very end, Momon hasn't learned a single spell that harms others.

Elle is seen in the last chapter of the series with Kafk Sunbeam, Ponygon's former book keeper.

Japanese voice actors: Momon – Naozumi Takahashi, Elle Chivas – Kotono Mitsuishi

Laila and Albert

Laila (レイラ, Reira, "Layla") and Albert (アルベール, Arubēru) are the second team that the group encounters after penetrating the Devolo Ruins. Laila's powers are moon-based and revolve around the moon-tipped staff that is her primary weapon. They are accompanied by Dalmos and Elizabeth, who attack the group; but Laila does not fight, instead helping Tia, Megumi and Ponygon to escape. Zofis learns of this and orders Laila to stay under the Stone of Moonlight and keep the invaders from destroying it, or else she will be turned to stone. She at first obeys out of fear, but Kiyo's encouragement and the partial awakening of Albert helps her overcome it.

Laila and Albert help the group fight the terrifying Demolt, and although Laila does well against the monster, his bookkeeper gives him more intelligence than he had in the past. When Penny and Uri shatter the Stone of Moonlight, though, Albert fully awakens and is able to use Laila's spellbook to its full ability, creating moonbeams that restrict movement and assisting greatly in the fight against Demolt. After Demolt and subsequently Zofis are defeated, Laila asks Zatch to burn her book, as she has no place in the current battle for the Mamodo Kingship. She kisses Albert on the cheek for being a good partner before she goes.

Laila later reappears as one of the mamodo spirits who help Zatch when his book becomes gold during the fight with Clear Note. She and Pamoon surround Clear Note with moons and stars, and Victoream causes them to fire V-shaped lasers.

Ashuron and Riin Vise

Ashuron (アシュロン, Ashuron) and Riin Vise (リイン・ヴィズ, Riin Vizu) are the main ally team during the King Festival arc with dragon powers. Ashuron is Eruzadoru's brother, but he is far stronger due to his mystical red scales, which are called hihiro. These scales also make him invulnerable to nullification-type spells such as those of Clear Note, his eternal rival. Ashuron's basic form resembles a tall human with horns, but he is capable of transforming into his true form, a massive, winged dragon. He enjoys sake, and his dream is to end discrimination in the Makai. Riin is largely silent, and little is known about him, though he is known for his very distinctive hairdo, and enjoys the excitement that his adventures with Ashuron provides. They are defeated in a self-sacrifice when Ashuron blocks one of Clear's spells with his own body, but at the same time score a major victory against Clear by skewering him on the end of his horn, incapacitating Clear for ten months. Before his return, Ashuron bades Zatch to fulfill his dream when he becomes King. He ranked 9th place in the fight overall.

Naomi

Naomi (なおみ) is Zatch's biggest challenger off of the demonic battlefield. Her main goals in life seem to be preventing Zatch from making friends, beating up on Zatch, and basically causing as much emotional and physical pain as possible for the little mamodo. Yet, despite the seemingly endless list of evil qualities, Naomi does seem to have a few redeeming values deep down inside, saving Zatch from falling off a cliff in episode 36 and showing loneliness and regret in Zatch's absence during the Milordo-Z arc. She always seems to have her teeth clenched all the time, and has a toy car she drives around in. According to Kane, Naomi lives in the same neighborhood as him, as mentioned in Episode 32. She also seems to get along well with Tia, as seen in Episode 40. It seems that both Naomi's parents have clenched teeth, as seen in chapter 257 in the manga.

Naomi first appears in episode 4. In the English version of the series, she is voiced by Michelle Ruff. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Shihomi Mizowaki.
