Template:Infobox Indian jurisdiction Bhuvanagiri is a panchayat town in Cuddalore district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Geography

Bhuvanagiri is located at 11°28′N 79°38′E / 11.47°N 79.63°E / 11.47; 79.63.[1] It has an average elevation of 11 metres (36 feet). Bhuvanagiri is located 7 km from the world famous temple town Chidambaram.

Economy

Bhuvanagiri is the birth place of the famous saint of South India, Sri Raghavendra Swami. The town is also close to the birth place of Saint Ramalinga Adigalar (town Maruthur).

The word Bhuvanagiri is a combination of two Tamilized-Sanskrit words - Bhuvanam (means World) and Giri (means Mountain or Unmovable). Hence, the name Bhuvanagiri can mean "the place (world) that does not move".

Bhuvanagiri is internally referred to by the local population as "Mel Bhuvanagiri" (Western Segment) & "Kizhl Bhuvanagiri" (Eastern Segment).

Agriculture is the main occupation of more than 3/4th of the town's population and they depend on it.

Rice is the widely cultivated crop, followed by Black gram and Green gram. These set of crops are cultivated in a type of land known in Tamil as NanSei.

Other less cultivated crops include Ragi/Millet, Bhajra, Corn, Gingely and Thoor dhal. These set of crops are cultivated in a type of land known in Tamil as PunSei.

Famous river Vellaru (a tributary of river Cauvery) provides water for irrigation.

The town is also famous for handloom products (such as lungies, hand kerchiefs, saris, dhotis, etc.). It is also known for its Silk saris and Silk Textiles which are famously referred to as "Bhuvanagiri Pattu".

A road bridge (over river Vellaru) in Bhuvanagiri connects the roadway between Cuddalore (in the north) & Chidambaram (in the south).

Education

There are no dearth of educational centers in & around Bhuvanagiri.

There are two Government higher secondary schools - the Government Boys Higher Secondary School and the Government Girls Higher Secondary School.

Private Higher secondary schools include Subramaniya Bharathiyar Matriculation Hr Sec School & Mangalam Matriculation Hr Sec School.

Two junior colleges for kinder garden include Sri Arunachala vidhalaya and SRT Junior college.

Other private schools include Kalaivani Matriculation School, Kennedy nursery school and Rainbow nursery school.

Private educational institutions include Mangalam teacher training institute, Mangalam ITI etc.

The town has a Multi-speed Internet browsing center located near bus stand.

The famous Annamalai University at Chidambaram is just a few kilometres away from Bhuvanagiri.

Culture

In Bhuvanagiri, Hindus, Muslims and Christians are living together peacefully without any differences as Indians and they work together for the well being of their Town.

Temples include Sri Raghavendra Swami Temple (Birth place site), Sri Chamundeeswari Amman temple, Kamatchi amman koil (near oneway), Ellamman koil, Angalamman koil, Dropathi amman koil, Shiva or Eswaran koil (the last two are near tourist bungalow), Ancient temple of Varadharaja perumal (in Adivaraganathan) -- the latter two are close to the border of the Town's Perumaathur Village in the West, Sri Hanuman Temple (worshipped by Sri Raghavendra Swami and it is on the way to the river Vellaru), Sri Hanuman Temple (near Vellaru bridge), Pillaiyaar koil (opposite to registrar & post offices) and Muthaachi or Muchandi Pillaiyaar koil, Sri Vishnu Kaliyamman Temple (Kizhl Bhuvanagiri), SriNivasa Perumal Temple (Kizhl Bhuvanagiri).

There are two mosques, one is Madar Pada Pallivasal and the other is Jamiah palli. Both are located in the main road to Cuddalore.

Bhuvanagiri, a legislative assembly constituency is part of Chidambaram (Lok Sabha constituency).[3]
