TV appearances

X-Men

Jean Grey as Phoenix in the X-Men animated series.

Jean Grey-Summers is a character in the X-Men animated television series of the mid-1990s, voiced by Catherine Disher. As in the comics, she was in a relationship with Cyclops, eventually marrying him while being the target of Wolverine's unrequited affection. For the most part she was a warm, friendly person who when necessary stepped in and played peace maker between Cyclops and Wolverine. As far as her relationship with Cyclops was concerned, they were very happy and content with each other, in stark contrast to Gambit and Rogue, who were often fighting and bickering. The entire saga of the Phoenix is retold and adapted in the third season of the X-Men animated series, subdivided into the five-part "Phoenix Saga," in which Jean acquires the power of the Phoenix and the battle for the M'Kraan Crystal occurs, and the "Dark Phoenix Saga", showcasing the battle with the Hellfire Club, the Phoenix's transformation into Dark Phoenix, and the battle to decide her fate. These particular episodes are as close as the cartoon came to directly duplicating the comic book storylines - the "Dark Phoenix Saga" is so accurate to the original stories that the episodes have the additional credit, "Based on stories by Chris Claremont."

  • She also guest starred in Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the 1990s in first the fourth and fifth episodes of Season 2, along with the rest of the X-Men.

X-Men: Evolution

In the animated TV series X-Men: Evolution, Jean, voiced by Venus Terzo, is a popular soccer player. She also teaches and trains the mutant students of Xavier Institute. Jean is also a popular athlete of Bayville. She wears a black costume with green accent. Since she is a telepath, she's the one who operates Cerebro aside from Professor Xavier. When humans found out about mutants, Jean was accused of using her powers for things that she successfully accomplished without using her powers, such as playing volleyball in school. In one episode, Jean lost control of her powers which caused her to be uncontrollably read people's minds. The X-men were having a hard time trying to help her, but luckily Rogue was ipresent and used her powers to absorb Jeans. When Professor X became Apocalypse's horseman, she faced him and they fought. After Apocalypse's defeat, Professor X had a vision that Jean would be possessed by the Phoenix Force. Her personality was cheerful, slightly tomboyish, quick-tempered, with a sort-of jealous streak and some insecurity issues that would appear later in the series. Jean possesses telekinesis and telepathy, initially only being able to move objects with her hand. She can remote view others, be in psychic rapport with others and can tell if another speaks the truth. Later her powers increase to the extent that she can now move objects as heavy as an helicopter without effort and create psionic blasts that can render a person unconscious within a few seconds. She is capable of flight at high altitudes, and with intense concentration can divert the water flowing from a dam while in flight.

Wolverine and the X-Men

Jean Grey and Scott Summers in Wolverine and the X-Men.

Jean Grey appears in Wolverine and the X-Men voiced by Jennifer Hale. Jean was lost after a mysterious explosion at the Institute. After that, the X-Men disbanded. Logan tried to convince Cyclops to return to the team but he declined. After Professor X finally convinced him, the X-Men were reformed. Mr. Sinister fooled Cyclops in to thinking that he had Jean, but of course itwas only a set-up. Jean was, unknown to anyone, in a hospital. When she finally awoke, the doctors asked for her name but she couldn't remember anything, even her name.

Jean's past was revealed and she is shown in her teenage years being confronted by Magneto and Professor X. She then joined the original X-Men. She was also shown defeating Magneto and he admits that Jean is stronger than what he originally thought. As she enters the Institute, Logan also develops a crush on her. Cyclops and Logan confront each other regarding this matter.

Back in the present time, Jean is being helped by a nurse named Marjorie on trying to recall her name. Marjorie starts speaking name after name and wouldn't stop even though Jean asked her to. Jean became confused and not ralizing what she was doing, lost control of her telekinetic powers. This caught Emma's attention when it registered on Cerebra. Emma then told Scott that she might have found Jean. They went to the location where Emma thought Jean would be. Meanwhile, Jean is being chased by the MRD in the hospital. She was eventually cornered by the MRD with Marjorie pointing her out to them. With Jean feeling extremely hopeless, she unintentionally manifested her Phoenix Powers which caused an intense psychic wave that affected almost the entire city. Archangel, under Mr. Sinister's command, followed Jean and tortured her. Scott and Emma then found Jean and helped her. They soon discovered that the reason why Jean was not in mental contact with Scott was because she had no memory of him. During this time they were followed by Archangel. He was able to abduct Jean and take her to Mr. Sinister, who wanted genetic samples from her to create the ultimate mutant in combination with Scott's genes. The X-Men then appear and attempt to help, but the Marauders are too powerful for them to defeat. Jean then manifests her Phoenix Force and defeates the Marauders. Scott was able to calm her down and take her to the Institute for rest and promised her that she would regain her memories in conjunction with Rogue's abilities. Everyone at the institute then became unconscious, except Emma who was revealed to be an undercover agent of the Hellfire Club who now had Jean Grey.

The Hellfire Club was then able to claim Jean as one of their members. By using the combined powers of Emma and the Cuckoos, they mentally tricked Jean into doing what they want by using images of Scott and the Professor. But the mental contact was interrupted by Scott's connection to Jean. The Stepford Cuckoos then tried to release the Phoenix so they could be hosts, and succeeded. Cyclops, Emma and Jean then fought against the Phoenix while it consumed the bodies of the Cuckoos. Jean has rejoined the X-Men and her memories have since returned. It is also mentioned that Jean is yet again one of the origonal X-Men shown in Cyclop's flash backs. She is shown here with Angel, Iceman, Beast (before he has fur) Along with a younger Charles Xavier.

Jean Grey appears in The Super Hero Squad Show voiced by Hynden Walch in the episode Mysterious Mayhem at Mutant Academy (oddly while the comic book cover intro for the episode shows Jean wearing a child-like version of her classic Phoenix costume, she wears a cheerleader uniform with a X-logo in the actual episode). In it, she is the only cheerleader at X-Men academy. After she becomes a victim of Ringmaster she still shows her peppy side in cheers(Call me Phoenix, call me Jean. She also makes an appearance in Ice Man Cometh where she is telekinetically keeping the water from the melted ice caps from hitting the school.

Film

Famke Janssen portrays Jean Grey/Phoenix in the feature films X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand. A young version of Jean is also seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, and is played by Haley Ramm.

X-Men

In X-Men, Jean was introduced as the team’s medical doctor (reportedly as a substitute for Dr. Hank McCoy, who would have required prosthetic makeup) and is Cyclops's girlfriend though she also becomes attracted to Wolverine. Her powers are very limited compared to her comic counterpart. She is a low level telekinetic, able to move small objects around. Her greatest feats in this movie where when she stopped Toad mid-leap, and when she held Wolverine steady as Storm used wind to levitate him to the top of the Statue of Libery. An early version of the "Phoenix effect" can be seen when she manages to help Wolverine achieve his goal of breaking the machine with his claws.

X2: X-Men United

At the beginning of X2: X-Men United, Jean is watching over the students on a field trip to a museum. She tells Scott that she has been having bad dreams and that her telepathy has been growing stronger, and that since the event on Liberty Island her powers have been increasing. While on the run from the U.S. Air Force, in the X-Jet, Jean shows Phoenix like powers when she destroys a missile, causing her eyes to glow fire red. When she fights Cyclops who is under William Stryker's control, and is able to telekinetically shield herself from Cyclops' optic beam before dispersing it and scattering the energy about, causing it to destroy the dam's structural integrity, a red glow seems to come off of Jean at this point. Her power apparently reaches Phoenix level as she repairs the X-Jet wit her mind, lifts the jet into the air, telepathically stops Nightcrawler's teleportation to prevent him from rescuing her, and communicates with Cyclops through Professor X by telepathy, all while she holds back the resulting massive tidal wave from the dam's collapse. Jean is engulfed by fire at this point and, once she's sure she's gotten the X-Men out of danger, closes her eyes and lets the waters crash onto her. At the End of the movie as Jean narrates an explanation of evolution you can see the Phoenix Force flying below the surface of the water.

X-Men: The Last Stand

In X-Men: The Last Stand, Jean's death severely affects Cyclops, who has frequent nightmares of her, and is unable to move on due to constant telepathic messages from her. He returns to Alkali Lake, where he angrily releases the full force of his optic blasts into the waters. This in turns awakens the Phoenix. [Like in the comic, the Phoenix feeds off of the optic blast. It can be argued that Scotts outburst is what causes her rise.] They begin to kiss and she insists he remove his glasses as she is able to control his powers and stops his optic beams from emitting, but then apparently kills him by atomizing him with her telekinesis. [Although this is not shown on screen, it is apparently what happens.] When Scott is killed, Xavier is shown feeling pain and then sends out a telepathic message that has Wolverine and Storm running to his side. He sends them to Alkali Lake where they find Scott's glasses and an unconscious Jean Grey who is taken back to the Mansion. It is revealed by Xavier that since Jean was a young girl she had powers that were beyond all known limitations. Fearing that Jean could not control her vast powers, Xavier put psychic blocks around her subconscious mind to keep Jean's full powers at bay. Due to this, while growing up, Jean has developed a dual personality - one being her usual self and the other being her powerful and uninhibited side which calls itself the ' Phoenix' which emerges when she gets angry. Xavier leaves and Wolverine stays by Jean's side. When she awakens, she seems normal but is really the aggressive Phoenix. They kiss and when Jean snaps out of the Phoenixs hold she starts to have a nervous breakdown, causing thing to shake and burst. When Wolverine mentions Xavier, the Phoenix comes back full force and knocks Wolverine out, and crumbles the huge mental doors. She is next seen at her old childhood house, where Xavier meets Magneto. Once in the house, the Phoenix and Xavier begin a huge telepathic battle. Gravity reverses, and things begin to disintegrate, and so does Xavier. The Phoenix then leaves with Magneto. Near the movies end, during the attack on Alcatraz Island, Dark Phoenix unleashes her full power and destroys much of Worthington Labs, the X-Jet, and kills both mutants and humans along the way. Wolverine tells Storm to get everyone to safety while he stays behind, as he is the only one who can stop her [because of his healing factor]. He manages to get up to Jean, who burns through his skin multiple times, only for it to re-surface long enough for him to plead for her to stop. She then asks him "you would die for these people" to which he replies "no, I would die for you". It's at that moment that Jean resurfaces and begs him to stop her. Wolverine tells Jean he loves her, and then stabs her with his claws. With that, Jean's destruction ceases and she smiles thankfully at Logan before she dies. Her gravestone is later seen next to Cyclops' and Xavier's.

X-Men game appearances

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Phoenix appears as a NPC in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, and is a striker character in the Game Boy Advance version of the game. She is voiced by Sarah Waits. In the PC and next-gen console versions, she is initially kidnapped by Arcade who puts her under mind control and forces her to battle the player's team. After she is rescued, she assists the player's mission to rescue Nightcrawler from Mephisto's realm, only to be captured by Blackheart in the process. After defeating Blackheart, the player has the choice to save either Jean or Nightcrawler, since saving one results in the other's death. If Nightcrawler was rescued, then Jean will be resurrected by Mephisto as the Dark Phoenix and return to kill the heroes for not saving her (that will occur during the game). After you defeat Phoenix during the fight against Mephisto, Jean Grey-Summers dismisses herself as an echo of her past self and sacrifices her life to defeat Mephisto. In the end of the game it is revealed if the player saved Jean, Mystique will avenge Nightcrawler by infiltrating the X-Mansion at night to vent her frustration upon Professor X where he will die in a coma months later and the X-Men will disband forever. On a side note, she has special dialogue with Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Invisible Woman, and Cyclops. On the PC Version of the game, Jean is available as a playable Mod character from Marvel Mods.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

Jean Grey appears as a playable character in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 voiced by Molly Hagan. She can be unlocked by collecting 5 shards of the M'Kraan Crystal. Her default costume is her Phoenix costume. She uses telepathy, telekinesis, and the power of the Phoenix. Jean's alternate costume is her X-Men: First Class costume and she fits in the X-Men, Masters of Energy and Femme Fatales team bonuses. Since she is a playable character in this game, her fate in the first game is non-canon. In the game she has a special conversation with Cable, however this conversation is only available if you pick Anti-Registration in the game, it deals on their family relationship and the status on the Civil War.

Toys

Jean Grey-Summers has appeared in several X-Men toy lines, including the popular Marvel Legends line. Her first figure appeared within the Shi'ar assortment of X-Men figures, with her wearing her green Phoenix costume and included an electronic light up hair and eyes feature. Eventually a Jean in her 90s outfit was offered as part of an exclusive line called She-Force (Subsequently, the figure was only a repaint of a previous figure). Later, she was a part of the Onslaught assortment, this time wearing he blue and yellow costume that she wore for most of the 90's, which was oddly preposed with very little articulation. Following this figure, she was a part of the X-Men Space Riders assortment, wearing a variation of her 90's costume that also included added space suit parts. After this, a better looking, more articulated version of Jean in her 90's outfit was designed and shown at Toyfair. Unfortunately, the line had later been canceled and the figure never saw release.

In Marvel Legends series 6, she appeared in her Phoenix(green) costume, with a Dark Phoenix variant. The Phoenix figure was later re-released as part of the X-Men Classics Line. A figure of Jean Grey from X-Men: The Last Stand was released in the second series of Marvel Legends from Hasbro with a Dark Phoenix variant as well.[1]

A Phoenix figurine has also been released as part of the "Superhero Squard" line of non-articulated figurines. These small scale figurines depict famous Superheroes in "kiddie" variations. Phoenix is released as a two-pack with the brown and orange costumed Wolverine. A Dark Phoenix variant has also been released as a Toys 'R' Us exclusive boxset.

A Phoenix toy was created based on the first X-Men movie. Three different variants were released. The first had her with an open top, no bra, and her hair down. The second had a redesigned head with her hair tied back, and a bra painted on underneath her open top. The third had the same tied back hair do, but the chest was redone and closed up, making it the most accurate of the three variations.

A Jean Grey-Summers figure was also created as part of Toy Biz's Famous Covers assortment. The figure depicted her in her blue and yellow 90's outfit.

Jean Grey is the eleventh figurine in the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection.
