Jay Park

Park Jaebeom (Hangul: 박재범, born April 25, 1987), also known as Jay Park, is a Korean American b-boy, singer, and rapper. He is the former leader of popular South Korean boyband 2PM, currently part of b-boy crew Art of Movement in Seattle, Washington.

Career

Predebut

Born and raised in Edmonds, Washington, Jaebeom originally auditioned in the US for JYP Entertainment as a rapper and b-boy. Park Jin-young himself watched Jaebeom's audition and brought him to Korea where he trained for four years to improve his singing and Korean, initially to debut as a solo artist.[citation needed].

2008: Debut and Success

Jaebeom first appeared through MNET's Hot Blood, a program that showed the intense physical training that 13 male trainees had to go through for the opportunity to debut in either 4-member ballad group 2AM or 7-member dance group 2PM under JYP Entertainment[1]. After getting through eliminations, Jaebeom was given the position of 2PM's leader and debuted with the song "10점 만점에 10점" ("10 Points out of 10 Points") on September 4, 2008. However, it wasn't until their "Again & Again" promotions that the group's popularity skyrocketed, winning their first Mutizen award on M!Countdown on May 9, 2009[citation needed], as well as their second award on SBS Inkigayo in the same week[citation needed].

Jaebeom did a solo self-composed rap for a joint stage performance with 2AM for their song "친구의 고백" ("A Friend's Confession") on May 16, 2009[2], as well as rapping for "Lost" with Taecyeon during 2AM's Goodbye Stage the next day on Inkigayo[3]. Aside from 2PM's music activities, Jaebeom featured in "正" ("Jeong") with Yeeun of Wonder Girls for the Han Sung Byul Gok OST, and V.O.S's track "To Luv..."[4]. He also participated in special stage performances such as Navi's "마음이 다쳐서" ("Heart Damage") on May 3, 2009[5], and K.Will's "1초에 한방울" ("One Drop per Second") on June 20, 2009[6].

Due to his playful and popular image, Jaebeom was a regular cast member on several variety programs, including Star King and Introducing Star's Friend[7]. In August 2009, he and KARA member Nicole became part of historical culture variety show Nodaji as new MCs, replacing Choi Min Yong and Kim Tae Hyun[8].

September 2009: MySpace Controversy

On September 4, 2009, articles surfaced on the internet regarding Jaebeom's mistranslated posts from 2005 on his personal Myspace account, in which he expressed his dislike for Korea while still a trainee. This caused an explosion of rage from netizens, including demands for him to be forced out of the country as well as a suicide petition that gained up to 3,000 signatures before it was closed down[citation needed]. Jaebeom issued an apology regarding this matter.[9] Although outraged protesters demanded that Jaebeom should be striped of his status as a member of 2PM, JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin-young stated on September 7 that he was going to continue to remain part of the group[10]. The following day, Jaebeom announced on his official fancafe that he would be leaving the group and returning to the United States, with plans of going back to school and bettering his understanding of music, and also apologized to the other 2PM members for not being a good leader and older brother to the group.[11] Park Jin-young has confirmed that 2PM will continue on as a 6-member group.[12] Additionally, due to the sensitive topic of Jaebeom's departure, all 2PM members were withdrawn from their regular appearances on variety shows[13], and the final episode of their reality show "Wild Bunny" postponed indefinitely[14]. Forced to continue with their preparations, the 6 members re-filmed their music video for "Heartbeat" without Jaebeom on October 31, 2009. During a press conference, it was revealed that Jaebeom's vocals would not be removed from the older songs he promoted with 2PM, but he would be completely absent from the newer tracks.[15]

After Jaebeom's Departure

2PM's first official album was titled "1:59PM" which the members stated in an interview that it was to represent Jaebeom's absence[16]. Through their winning speeches at the End of Year award shows for "Again & Again", the members gave special thanks to Jaebeom, empathizing their wish for his return. At the M.net Asian Music Awards, the group paid homage to him during their performance of "Again & Again", in which a spotlight was shown over Jaebeom's usual position in the dance formation and his lines were not sung.[17]. In further support of Jaebeom's place in the group, the six 2PM members also decided to distribute their income from their 1st album with him, sending him an equally divided amount of the earnings.[18]

There were even talks of a possible reality show for Jaebeom in a similar format as Ivy's "IVY BACK" if the decision was confirmed for his return[19]. A press conference regarding Jaebeom's situation was said to be held on January 24, 2010[20], but this was shortly denied by JYP Entertainment[21] There were also rumors about Jaebeom secretly preparing for a solo musical comeback and an American acting debut in "Hype Nation"[22], although these were all stated by JYPE to be groundless[23].

Fan Movement

Fans from various forums and cafes all over the world united to perform flash mobs by incorporating the group's choreography to express their desire for Jaebeom's return.[citation needed] International fans also raised money for the Jay Sky Banner project in order to fly a banner across the Seattle sky with the message "J, WHAT TIME IS IT NOW?" at 2:00PM. Seattle's local broadcasting news station, KOMO News, did a brief segment of the event[24].

Several 2PM fan communities also contributed extremely generous donations to charities in Jaebeom's honour, in particular major fanclub "Underground" donated a total of $10,000 USD to the children's foundation in Haiti under the name "People Waiting For 2PM Leadja Park Jaebeom."[25]. International fansites also took part, with North American-based 2AM and 2PM fan community "2ONEDAY" donating $1,000 USD for sending books to international Korean adoptees[26].

On several instances, Jaebeom was the number one trending topic on Twitter, even topping the Oscars on March 8, 2010[27]. Jaebeom's fanbase revealed that they plan to release a self-produced album in his honour on March 27, 2010, commemorating 200 days since his departure from Korea[28].

February 2010: Official Contract Termination and Further Controversy

On February 25, 2010, two days before a 2PM fan union conference was to be held[29], JYP Entertainment announced on their official website that Jaebeom's contract was permanently terminated, stating that in December he confessed to a mistake worse than the Myspace incident during the "Again & Again" promotions which consequently led to the immediate halt to all plans of his return through 2PM. It also claimed that the 6 members had unanimously agreed to the termination in early January.[30] Due to no explanation as to what the mistake was other than the fact that it was not criminally, but morally wrong[31] and with the announcement being nearly 2 months after the decision was made (during this time fans were continuously reassured about Jaebeom's place in 2PM[32][33]), the public reacted with shock, anger and disbelief[34]. Many fans expressed intense hate and disappointment in the remaining members, condemning their actions as betrayal. Most of the backlash fell upon two members in particular, Ok Taecyeon and Jang Wooyoung, who had recently returned to variety programs after a long hiatus; fans vehemently demanded for them to leave their respective shows[35].

The conference was held at the Garden Five in Seoul, Moonjung-dong on February 27, 2010, with the six 2PM members and Jung Wook, CEO of JYPE, attending to directly answer questions from 87 representatives of major online 2PM fan communities. Cameras and reporters were not allowed inside the conference room, where the meeting lasted up to 4 hours[36]. Clarifications were made about the decision of Jaebeom's confirmed withdrawal and that 2PM's future activities as a 6 member group would be unaffected. The contents of the mistake were yet again not explained[37], resulting in a severely negative response from fans as well as immense disappointment and rage at the members' answers regarding Jaebeom[38].

Reappearance through Youtube

A few months after his return to Seattle, various videos of Jaebeom engaging in b-boying battles started appearing on Youtube and they spread quickly through net portals[39][40][41]. First surfacing around November, the majority of the videos were fancams taken by spectators of the events without focusing on him. However, on February 18, Jaebeom battled by himself for the first time at “Wild ‘N Out” held by the Hip Hop Student Association (HHSA) at University of Washington[42], although with a mosaic hiding his face[43]. On March 6, 2010, Jaebeom and Art of Movement crew participated in charity event "Breakin' 4 Haiti"[44].

On March 15, 2010, Jaebeom resurfaced in the media world for the first time by himself after his contract termination, posting a video on Youtube singing a rendition of "Nothin' On You" with his own rap and lyrics[45]. After fans were notified through Art of Movement's official Facebook page, the video went viral and reached over 1,500,000 views in less than 24 hours. The original song by B.o.B. and Bruno Mars topped the Cyworld background music chart in a matter of hours upon the video's release, unexpectedly beating Girls' Generation's song "Run Devil Run" that was released the following day[46]. On his 'About Me' page, Jaebeom left a message thanking his fans for their support. He also expressed good feelings towards his former 2PM members and encouraged fans not to hate them on his behalf.[47]

On March 18, an American online entertainment channel "stirfrytv.com" did a brief report on Jaebeom's video during their "But, What Do I Know?" segment, garnering much attention from international online viewers[48]. On March 19, Digital Media Wire published an article emphasizing Jaebeom's potential of crossing over to the American entertainment market[49].
