Tang Wei (Chinese: 湯唯; pinyin: Tāng Wéi) (born October 7, 1979) is a Chinese actress.

Early life

Born in Zhejiang Province, Tang is the only child of a former stage actress and painter. Her parents frequently brought their daughter to visit various cities and landmarks in their native country, while both expressed and encouraged a great amount of creativity in their family.[1] Tang graduated from a local vocational high school in her hometown in 1996, where her teachers described her as "athletic" and a "good student who always did her homework". She had no plans to become famous; she originally aspired to become an archaeologist or lawyer.[2] Tang made the decision to enter the entertainment industry after doing some modeling in 1997. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 2002.

In 2009, during her absence from the movie industry, Tang studied drama at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.[3][4]

Career

Tang was selected from more than 10,000 actresses[5] to appear in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution (Winner of the 2007 Golden Lion Award) as Wong Chia Chi, co-starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Joan Chen, and Leehom Wang. For the role of Wong Chia Chi, she has won the Best New Performer Golden Horse award. Tang was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award.

In March 2008, it was reported that some of Tang's commercial sponsors had dropped her television and print ads due to her performance in the movie Lust, Caution. A Chinese media ban had been imposed.[6][7] This included Tang's forthcoming TV commercials to endorse various snack foods and cosmetics.

She was set to star in Tian Zhuangzhuang's big budget period film The Warrior and the Wolf, but was replaced by Maggie Q[8].

In February 2009, it was announced that Tang would co-star in Crossing Hennessy, a romantic drama, with Jacky Cheung.[9] Tang's first movie to be shown in China since Lust, Caution, a March 2010 news article quoted her as saying, "Coming to Hong Kong for this premiere, I can see director Ivy and co-star Andy On again. I've been very happy. Now I'm just excited to see the movie. I will be happy if everyone can see my work."[10]

In November 2009, it was announced that Tang was filming with Hyun Bin in Late Autumn, directed by Kim Tae-Yong.[11]

Personal life

Tang met Zhu Yuchen (朱雨辰) (born 1979) while a high school student in 1995. A Shanghai native, both were majoring in drama and acting. By 1998, the couple had moved in together while continuing to receive university education. They officially split in 2002, shortly before Zhu and Tang obtained degrees at the acting school, and Tang was reported to be distraught and crying upon witnessing their graduation ceremony.[12]

Tang ended a three-year relationship with Tian Yu (田羽) in December 2007.[13] She would not reveal further details or reasons for the split, but stated, "Tian Yu is important to me, and for years, he was the person who treated me the best. He always cared about and helped me quietly. Without him, I definitely would not have played a role in Lust, Caution, and wouldn't have the success I've made today. I will always feel grateful to him."

In October 2008, the Hong Kong immigration authority approved her application under Quality Migrant Admission Scheme, thus becoming a resident of Hong Kong.[14] This created more opportunities for her and broadened her career in the media industry. She also has ambitions for the United States and Hollywood as well.
