With the inclusion of curling into many FISU Universiades many countries have had to hold national championships to determine a representative.

FISU University Winter Games (Universiade) will be held in 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey. The first known qualifiers are Canadian champions Queen's (men) and Regina (women) (2011 Winter Universiade)

Canada

In Canada, University curling is played in a variety of levels. The CIS has sanctioned the University Curling Championships since 2008 [2]. The winners of the event will represent Canada at the FISU Universiades (in even years) and at the Karizawa Spiel (odd years).

2011 CIS Curling Championship

The 2011 CIS / CCA Curling Championship has been awarded to the Memorial University of Newfoundland. It will be contested in St. John's, NL.

2010 CIS Curling Championship

In 2010, the CIS Nationals were staged at the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The men's title was won by the surprise of the tournament, the Queen's Gaels skipped by Jon Beuk. In the final the Gaels defeated the UPEI Panthers, skipped by former Canadian junior champion and world junior silver medalist, Brett Gallant. In the women's final, the Regina Cougars took the title when skip Brooklyn Lemon drew the pin in an extra to defeat the St. Mary's Huskies. This was the second consecutive runner up finish for SMU skip Marie Christianson. With their wins Queen's and Regina will represent Canada at the 2011 FISU Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.

2009 CIS Curling Championship

The 2009 edition of the CIS nationals was held in Montreal, Quebec.[3] The event was played March 25 - 29, 2009 at the Royal Montreal Curling Club and Montreal West Curling Club. 12 men's and women's team were expected to participate. One rep from each province plus 2 additional teams from Ontario.

The Universiades are only held every 2 years, so this years winner will represent Canada at the 2010 Karuizawa Invitational in Japan.

2008 CIS Curling Championship

CIS and the CCA combined to host the first national curling championship hosted by U of Waterloo. It was held from March 12 to 16, 2008 at the Guelph Curling Club and Elora Curling Club. http://universitysport.ca/e/championships/curling/2008/index.cfm

In the inaugural event the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks took both the men's and women's titles.

In women's play the top teams after pool play were:

In the end the Golden Hawks swept to victory in both division. Especially impressive were the female Hawks who started out 0-3 and then won 7 in a row to claim victory.

Although this event was not fully sanctioned by the CIS or CCA, the winners still went on to represent Canada at the 2007 Winter Universiade. [4] Men's champs were the Saskatchewan Huskies and the women were from the Calgary Dinos. The women's team went on to win Gold.

Ontario University Athletics

Currently, the only conference with a curling championship is the OUA. Other member schools can apply directly to get to the national tournament. The OUA[5] offers curling championships in Men's and Women's divisions.
