Kat DeLuna

Kathleen Emperatriz "Kat" DeLuna (born November 26,[2] 1987[1] in Newark, New Jersey) is an American Pop and R&B singer of Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage. She is currently signed to Universal Motown after previously being signed to Epic. She is noted for her Soprano vocal range[3] and has won one Latin Billboard Music Award for her debut single "Whine Up".[4]

Career

2006-2008: 9 Lives

DeLuna performing in 2007

In 2006, DeLuna was signed by Epic Records and released her single "Whine Up" which hit #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the Summer of 2007. Following the success of the single, her debut album, 9 Lives, was released on August 7, 2007. It peaked on the Billboard Top 200 Albums at #58.[5]

"Am I Dreaming" was slated to be released as the album's second single, garnering a video shot in the Dominican Republic, as well as peaking at #26 on Billboard's Latin Tropical Airplay chart. However, the single release was eventually shelved.

In Fall 2007, she collaborated with Omarion for their single Cut Off Time which served as the lead single off the Feel the Noise soundtrack. The song peaked at #23 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.

In early 2008, her label decided to re-release her debut (removing the original version from iTunes to prepare), along with a new single, "Run the Show, " which became the set's second worldwide single. The single's release on February 5th, 2008 removed Shaka Dee's rap in favor of new vocals from Busta Rhymes. The song eventually peaked at #17 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. As the single underperformed, the album's re-release in the US was cancelled.

While her success in the US began to wane, she became highly successful overseas. In France, "Run The Show" held the #1 position for weeks. Additionally, at the Latin Billboard Music Awards 2008, DeLuna won the 'Latin Dance Club Play Track Of The Year' Award for her single "Whine Up."[4]

In September, DeLuna performed the US National Anthem at Texas Stadium during the Monday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. The performance garnered much media attention because of the booing coming from the crowd, during and after her performance.[6] It went on to land the #1 spot on Billboard Magazine's "10 Worst National Anthem Performances Ever" in 2010.[7]

Despite the negative press for the performance, DeLuna's international success continued. October 8th, 2008 saw the release of "Breathing Your Love," a collaboration with Swedish singer Darin Zanyar which became a #2 hit in Sweden and #13 in Finland.

2008–2009: Recording and Touring

In 2008, DeLuna premiered a new song, "Calling You" on her MySpace page and her official website. In addition, DeLuna filmed the video for "In The End," which was released as her debut's third single in Europe. The video for the single premiered on YouTube in January 2009, along with the unreleased video for "Am I Dreaming."

In 2009, she released a soundtrack single, "Unstoppable" featuring Lil' Wayne (featured on the soundtrack of the 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic). She released a video, and set out on a "Gay Club" tour in February 2009 in the United States.[8]

In June 2009, Kat DeLuna performed at New York City's Fashion Industries High School prom, as the star of My Prom Style's official website feature: "Ultimate Prom" fashion reality series. Three aspiring teen designers are competing to design the dress she wears to prom, and the pattern of the winning dress would be produced and sold nationwide by Simplicity Patterns.[9] Later that summer, she released a digital single, "Dance Bailalo" which failed to attract radio attention and sales.

2010-Present: Inside Out

In February 2010, she participated in the Spanish remake of We Are the World called Somos El Mundo alongside other Dominican singers: Juan Luis Guerra, Milly Quezada, Eddy Herrera, Romeo (Aventura), Fernando Villalona and Latin artists such as Paulina Rubio, Thalia, Belinda, Luis Fonsi, and Chayanne among others to dedicate to the devastation in the 2010 Haiti Earthquake and the Haitian people who were severely injured.

On April 13th 2010, Kat DeLuna released the lead single from her sophomore album Inside Out entitled "Push Push". The song was produced by RADIO, and features Akon. It peaked at #49 on Mediabase's CHR/Pop airplay chart.

Currently, she is still recording her sophomore album, while gearing up for a rumored new single, "Be There" produced by Eightysix before the release of the album.
