Buttonville Public School is an elementary school in the Buttonville neighbourhood of Markham, Ontario, Canada in the York Region District School Board. It offers grades JK–8 and is a feeder school to Unionville High School (UHS).

History

Buttonville P.S. is named after John Button, a landowner in 1808 of some 300 acres (1.2 km2). Major Button was a supporter of law and order, who demonstrated his loyalty by leading the Markham Dragoons in the War of 1812.

In September 2007, the French immersion program relocated from Buttonville P.S. to a newly built French immersion school, Sir Wilfrid Laurier PS, located east of Woodbine Avenue north of Elgin Mills Road south of Major Mackenzie Drive.

Buttonville P.S. was officially opened in September 1991. A child care centre, Buttonville Child Care, owned and operated by Upper Canada Creative Child Care, is located at Buttonville P.S. The school also works in partnership with nearby Chapel Place Day Care.

School Events

Buttonville P.S. has many events throughout the school year, including the annual Buttonville Run, Terry Fox run, Unicef "Trick or Treat" charity event, School dances and holiday concerts.

Fraser Institute

Buttonville ranked 103 out of 2786 Ontario elementary schools in 2008 according to the Fraser Institute. This is a decline over the five years prior when it ranked 45 out of 2374.[4]
