Simon & Garfunkel is an American singer-songwriter duo consisting of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel formed in 1957 as "Tom & Jerry", named after the animated series Tom and Jerry, and later "Simon & Garfunkel". Since 1964, the duo has released five studio albums, eighteen compilation albums, four live albums, one soundtrack album and one box set.

In October 19, 1964 they released their debut album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., which peaked at number thirty in the Billboard charts and at number twenty-four in the UK album charts and later received a platinum certification by the American national certification. The albums only single, "The Sound of Silence", was written by Paul Simon and is one of two versions of this song. The best-known version, a more rock-oriented live version, was released in their second album Sounds of Silence. This album peaked at number twenty-one in the Billboard charts and at number thirty in the UK album charts and later received 3×Multi-Platinum by the RIAA. Besides the single "with the same name", this album contains the single "I Am a Rock", also written by Paul Simon and first appeared in his debut album The Paul Simon Songbook. In October 10, 1966, the duo released their third album named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme consisting of five singles ("Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "Homeward Bound", "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine", "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", "The Dangling Conversation"). It peaked at number four in the US, and number fifteen in the UK and obtained 3×Multi-Platinum by RIAA. Their hit-single "Mrs. Robinson" was included in the bands first and only soundtrack, The Graduate, but later also included in their fourth studio album Bookends. This album peaked at number one in both, US and UK, and was therefore their first number one album, but received 2×Multi-Platinum in the US. In January 26, 1970, they released their fifth and last studio album, Bridge over Troubled Water. This album was their most successful album to date, by peaking at number one in several countries, including the UK and in the US, and by receiving 8×Multi-Platinum in the US. This album was sold over 25 million copies worldwide.[1] Despite their huge success, they announced in the same year their break off and decided to part company.
