Some video games have become well-known for negative reception for various reasons, such as criticism about their gameplay, graphics, sound, or other elements. Some of these games have also been additionally labeled by gaming publications as "the worst game ever made".

1980s

Custer's Revenge (Atari 2600)

  • Features a simulation of an apparent rape of a Native American woman,[1] and has been called one of the most violent games of all time by Alex Kidman.[2]
  • Listed as the most shameful game of all time by GameSpy,[1] as the third-worst game of all time by PC World,[3] and GameTrailers[4] and as the ninth-worst game by Seanbaby in Electronic Gaming Monthly.[5]
  • Aside from complaints over the game's sexual content, the game was also poorly received due to its poor gameplay and graphics.
  • Atari, the only platform for the game and not the maker, received numerous complaints about the game, and responded by trying to sue the game's makers.[6] Stuart Kesten, President of American Multiple Industries (Mystique), stated "our object is not to arouse, our object is to entertain [...] When people play our games, we want them smiling, we want them laughing." The game's designer, Joel Miller, said Custer was "seducing" the maiden and that she was a "willing participant."[7] Ultimately, the game was withdrawn from circulation.[8]
  • It was declared #3 Worst on Game Trailers' "Top Ten Best and Worst Games of All Time."[4]
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial received significant criticism for its poor quality graphics and redundant/confusing gameplay.

Pac-Man (Atari 2600)

  • Based on an unfinished prototype in an attempt to release by the holiday season of 1981.[16]
  • Contained many differences from the arcade version due to the limitations of the console, such as flickering monsters and lower-quality sound effects.[16]
  • 12 million copies were produced, even though only 10 million Atari 2600 consoles had been sold.[17]
  • Along with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, it has been cited as a significant factor in the 1983 video game industry crash.[18]

1990s

(Nintendo Entertainment System)

  • The majority of the titles included on the cartridge have major glitches. Some freeze or crash for no apparent reason, and some levels are incomplete. Many games have severe design flaws, including unresponsive controls, unexpected deaths for unclear reasons, and confusing design that makes it hard for the player to determine what they are supposed to do. Some levels cannot be completed at all.
  • There were grandiose plans for a line of merchandise including action figures, t-shirts, a comic book series and even a television cartoon based on the Cheetahmen, the featured game of Action 52, but these were eventually scrapped due to bad word-of-mouth, as well as scathing reviews, citing these issues.[19]

(CD-i)

  • Gained notoriety due to their barely functional controls, lackluster gameplay, poor voice acting and animation in the cut scenes, and numerous bugs.[4]
  • The games were ranked the #6 worst video game of all time by Electronic Gaming Monthly[20] and the #5 by GameTrailers.[4]
  • The full-motion cut scenes for both games were called "infamous" and "cheesy" by IGN,[21] while others called them "bizarre" and "an absolute joke".[22][23]

(PC)

(Nintendo 64)

  • This game was largely criticized for having unnecessarily repetitive, difficult and confusing objectives, unnecessarily short time limits that left no margin for error, poor graphics and poor controls.[27][28]
  • Listed as the worst game of all time by GameTrailers,[4] the worst game on a Nintendo platform by Nintendo Power,[29] and as the worst comic book video game adaptation in history by GameSpy and GameDaily.[30][31]
  • Critics were overwhelmingly negative in reviews, with Joe Fielder of GameSpot writing, "This is easily the worst game I've ever played,"[27] and other sites such as IGN[28] and Game Revolution panning the game for its atrocious set-up, gameplay, and graphics.[32]

2000s

(GameCube, Xbox)[33]

  • Named as one of the worst games of all time by X-Play, it was the inspiration for their annual award for the worst game of the year, "The Golden Mullet", a reference to the hairstyle Aquaman features in the game.[34] Similarly, the 2003 Nintendo Power awards had a category that was made only to give credit to Aquaman and "his sweet mullet".
  • The Xbox version averaged 26/100 while the GameCube version averaged 27/100 on Metacritic.[35]

(PlayStation 2, GameCube)

  • The game has a rating of only 23 on Metacritic.[36]
  • GameSpot called it a "horrific display of ineptitude."[37]
  • On GameRankings, Charlie's Angels received a 23%, with 24 reviews,[38] which as of September 2010 is the lowest rating of all games with more than 20 featured reviews on this website.[39]
  • The game was ranked #1 on GameTrailers' list of the Top 10 Worst Movie Games of all time, who said "The game is degrading, not to women, not even to video games, but to humanity itself".[15]

(PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube)

  • Hold a 35/100 on Metacritic based on 21 reviews.[40].
  • The game was ranked #4 on GameTrailers' list of the Top 10 Worst Movie Games of all time, who said "The game may redefine 'Bad', but it's the player who's punished".[15]
  • Listed as one of the worst games ever made by reviews at GameSpot,[41] Thunderbolt,[42] and Netjak,[43] and received the lowest possible scores from all three, owing to the game's complete lack of collision detection, poor graphics, and the fact that the AI opponents would do nothing, simply waiting on the start line. Gamespot's review began with the statement that the game is "as bad as your mind allows you to comprehend."[41] Alex Navarro's video review has no narration whatsoever; it consists of in-game footage interspersed with wider shots showing Navarro staring in disbelief, crying, and beating his head on a desk.[41] GameSpot also awarded it its 2004 Flat-Out Worst Game award, with its "trophy" being the infamous three-handled "YOU'RE WINNER !"[sic] trophy from the game.[44] It remains on record as the lowest score on GameSpot (bearing the lowest score possible: 1.0).
  • Has an average rating of 8% on Metacritic,[45] and 4% on GameRankings.[46]
  • Was named #2 as the "Worst Video Game of the Decade" at the "2009 SAGY Awards" by ScrewAttack, losing only to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[47]
  • Big Rigs sold well despite (and possibly because of) the negative reviews.[44]

(Nintendo DS)

  • Has the second-lowest aggregate Metacritic score of any video game (12/100).[48]
  • GameSpot rated the title 1.4/10, the lowest rating given for a Nintendo DS game, citing the fact that the games included are available for free on the Internet, and criticizing the game's simplistic mechanics and visuals.[49]
  • GameRankings has an average ranking of only 12.25%.[50]
  • IGN gave it a 1.0/10, calling it "absolutely retarded".[51]

(Nintendo DS)

  • Holds an aggregate score of 28/100 on Metacritic.[52]
  • GameSpot gave it a 2.1/10, calling it such a poor excuse of a first-person shooter that other developers should study it and use it as a guide when putting together similar style shooters in the future.[52]
  • IGN gave it a 3.0/10, explaining that the "gameplay stinks, the fighting stinks, the puzzles stink, the bugs problems stink. Enjoy!"[53]
  • PALGN gave it a 1/10, calling it borderline unplayable due to its horrid graphics.[52]
  • However, the console and PC versions went on to receive much more positive reviews, with an average score of 82 on Metacritic, and even winning awards for the cast's acting.[54]

(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

  • Gained negative reception due to its poor camera angles, long loading time, overwrought plot, and horrid controls.
  • GamesRadar called the story "ridiculously overwrought"[55] and "conceptually challenged."[56]
  • GameTrailers concluded that the game is "flat-out unfinished, unfairly difficult, and most importantly, just isn't much fun."[57][58]
  • GameSpot called the game "a mess from top to bottom."[59][60]
  • IGN admitted that "it offers a few good ideas, and a handful of exciting moments, but none of this helps the game recover from a catastrophic loss in control."[61]
  • ScrewAttack called the game the "Worst Video Game of the Decade" on their "SAGY Awards 2009" list, winning against Big Rigs.[47]
  • In 2009, GamesTM named it #1 on their top ten "Videogame Franchises that Lost their Way", commenting that "The blue hedgehog's next-gen efforts have been nothing short of appalling, none more so than his 2006 appearance."[62]

(Wii)

Ninjabread Man cover.
  • IGN gave the Wii version a score of 1.5/10, as they said: "Is Ninjabread Man actually a good game? No chance. It’s buggy, often completely broken, somehow manages to have frame issues in tiny levels, and is completely ruthless if (and when) younger players die."[63]
  • Has a Metacritic score of 20 out of 100.[64]
  • Cheat Code Central stated it was "one of the worst games you could ever have the misfortune of playing."[65]
  • Screwattack nominated Ninjabread Man the SAGY for "Worst multiplatform game of 2007"
  • Thunderbolt gave the game 1/10, as they stated: "Ninjabread Man could be a cool guy with a bad attitude, in a stark and ironic contrast to his surroundings. He could be the Jack Bauer of the bakery, but instead our hero is silent and lifeless."[66]

(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)

  • Screwattack.com gave the game a SAGY award for the Worst Multiconsole game of 2009.
  • Giant Bomb gave the game the Worst Game of the Year Award in 2009.
  • Australian television show Good Game rated it as the Worst Game of 2009.
  • Has a Metacritic score of 17 out of 100.
  • IGN gave it a 2.2/10, categorizing it as "terrible". They stated that "The lowest rating numbers here at IGN are reserved for games with nearly no redeeming qualities or interesting ideas, with next to nothing enjoyable to offer players, and which under no circumstances should be purchased by anyone. Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is, without a doubt, one of those games."[67]
  • GameCentral's review summarizes the game as "One of the worst video games ever made—brutally unfunny and monotonously inept on every level."[68]
  • Al Lowe thanked VU Games on his website for keeping him away from what he called "the latest disaster".[69]
  • GameTrailers rated the game a 2.3/10, the lowest score they've ever given on the site.[70]

(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows)

  • Rogue Warrior was given almost unanimously poor reviews due to broken and/or exploited combat techniques, a campaign that is around two hours long, a poor multiplayer mode, abysmal graphics, poor enemy AI, boring plot, and unresponsive controls. Rogue Warrior was also chided for excessive use of swearing, primarily by the game's protagonist.
  • Was given a 1.5/10 by IGN.[71]
  • Machinima gave the game a 2/10, saying that Rogue Warrior is "A buggy mess and with the amount of great games that are available for purchase right now, you can find a better way to blow $60".[72]
  • GamePro awarded Rogue Warrior a 3/10, and labeled the game a "generic, buggy and broken shooter with limited appeal, even to dedicated fans of Marcinko and the many books and novels that have documented his incredible life".[73]
  • GameSpot remarked, "This dreadfully boring, expletive-filled, extremely short shooter is an absolute rip-off" and gave the game a 2/10.[74]
