"....the greatest pound for pound deadlifter in world history, when the time element is considered...".
I guess this means something along the lines of "...if he was transported to the present day, and employed modern training methods, he'd probably be the best deadlifter the world has ever seen....".
I think a little elucidation/clarification by experts is required, however...
