Shirpur is a city and taluka in the Dhule district in the Nashik division of the Khandesh region of Maharashtra state in India. It is located on National Highway 3, which runs from Agra in Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai, Maharashtra. It lies on the boundary of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh state. The Arunawati river flows through the city. Shirpur is just 50 kilometers away from the city of Dhule. It also houses Asia's largest and India's first gold refinery.

The major occupation of the people in the taluka is agriculture with cotton as the major product. There is also one sootgirni in city.

Shirpur has one seat in the legislative assembly of Maharashtra. Mr. Amrish Patel is the MLA of Shirpur.

Education

Shirpur is an educational hub for North part of Khandesh as it has two engineering colleges, an MCA college, and a two pharmacy college. NMIMS Deemed University has started its first off-campus center at Shirpur in 2007 which has various courses such as B.Tech, M.B.A. Tech,M.B.A(PHARMA TECH),in various disciplines.which is situated beside the Tapi river of (NH3)Mumbai-Agra highway.it is approx. 400 km away from MUMBAI.and 211 km away from INDORE.

Transportation

Shirpur has its own airport, situated on the Chopda road.

Shirpur is not on the railway map of the country. The nearest prominent railway stations on the main route are Bhusaval and Chaalisgaon depending on the direction one is coming from. Bus service is very frequent to these notable places. Bus service to Bhusaval is available in the morning 5:55 am,and 2nd bus 8:45 am.and next in noon for bhusawal. There are no night service buses from Shirpur for bhusawal.

The renowned journalist and writer Vikas Shimpi-Shirpurkar was born in town. Shirpur is a native place (Bhatpure-Village) of Bollywood actress Smita Patil and her father, Mr. Shivajirao Patil, lives in this city also. Some of the Educational Institutes are in name of Smita Patil. Thalner -Village which comes under Shirpur Tahsil is also a native place of Smt. Shudhhamati, Lata Mangeshkar's mother affectionately called 'Mai' was from Thalner, was the daughter of Seth Haridas Ramdas Lad - a prosperous businessman of the town of Thalner.
