Background

Young Abby and Henry say goodbye after a summer together on Harper's Island. ("Sigh")
The daughter of Sarah and Charlie Mills, Abby was born on April 25, 1983 and grew up on Harper's Island. Abby and Henry Dunn spent summers together on the Island, and they became best friends. Abby and Henry were both unaware that Sarah Mills was also Henry's mother, who was conceived when Sarah was involved in a relationship with John Wakefield.

During Abby's teen years she began dating Jimmy Mance, a local fisherman and friend of Henry. She was also good friends with Nikki Bolton, who encouraged Abby to move forward with her relationship with Jimmy. Abby took the initiative and made plans to go "camping" with Jimmy. On the day of the 2001 murders, Abby and Jimmy set off to go camping, only to be interrupted when John Wakefield set off an explosion at the Marina. Abby and Jimmy rushed to the marina to investigate, where they encountered Charlie and Henry on the docks attending to an injured Cole Harkin. Charlie told Abby to go straight home, where she found the door open and her mother gone. Hearing her mother cry out in the distance, she decided to go and investigate.

Abby discovers her mother hanging from the Tree of Woe. ("Whap")
As she ran through the woods, Abby witnessed Wakefield killing Randall Martin with a head spade. Hearing Abby cry out, Wakefield moved toward her, but he was distracted by Jimmy who was passing by in his truck. Jimmy taunted Wakefield, leading him away. Abby then ran away, stumbling through the woods, where she discovered her mother, along with Christopher Cullen and Kate Seaver, hanging from the Tree of Woe. A few days later, Abby's father decided to send her to live with her grandmother on the mainland. Abby was upset with him, but was forced to leave without saying goodbye to any of her friends, including Jimmy.

Abby is currently a writer, living in Los Angeles.

Return to the Island

Henry greets Abby as she arrives at the dock in Seattle. ("Whap")
In "Whap", Abby reluctantly returns to the Island after seven years to attend Henry Dunn's wedding to Trish Wellington. At the entrance to the harbor in Seattle, Abby Mills pulls up in a taxi. The taxi driver states that Abby looks familiar, and, when she explains that she grew up on Harper's Island, he recognizes her as the Sheriff's daughter and expresses sadness about the Wakefield murders. Abby approaches the boat reluctantly and hugs Henry, explaining that she is nervous about returning to the island. On the boat ride to Harper's Island, she later explains to Henry that she needed to confront her fears if she was ever going to move on. After arriving at the marina on the Island, Abby runs into Jimmy Mance, who tries to reconnect with her. Abby declines an offer of a ride to the hotel, deciding instead to walk. On the way to the Candlewick Inn, Abby passes by the Tree of Woe, and vividly remembers finding her mother's body. Henry finds her and assures her that the violence is over, saying, "The killer's dead... Abby, Wakefield's dead." Henry walks with Abby to the Candlewick, where she is warmly greeted by the manager, Maggie Krell. Later, inside her hotel room, she receives a mysterious phone call playing the song "Ave Maria." She goes downstairs to the party to have a bit to drink to calm herself.

Abby is stalked outside The Cannery ("Whap")
Later, in the hotel bar, Henry rescues Abby from a conversation with the bridesmaids, telling her that he is looking for his brother J.D.. Abby offers to go to the local bar, The Cannery, to look for him. On the way, she is unknowingly watched by John Wakefield, and both are videotaped by Andrew Cullen. Upon entering the bar, she is greeted by her old friend Nikki and finds J.D. sitting alone drinking. Jimmy is also present and challenges her to a game of pool, which she accepts. During their game, a fight breaks out between J.D. and Shane Pierce after J.D. unknowingly makes a pass at Shane's ex-girlfriend Kelly Seaver. Abby tries to break up the fight by hitting Shane with the pool cue, but is stopped by her father, who is shocked to discover her on the Island. He takes Abby and J.D. back to the Candlewick, but Abby refuses to talk to him about their past. Upon reentering the Candlewick, Henry approaches her and apologizes for J.D.'s behavior, and Abby says she's sorry that she wasn't able to keep J.D. out of trouble. She goes back to her room, only to find an article about her mother's murder plastered on the bathroom mirror.

The next day (in "Crackle"), Abby jogs in the woods to calm herself, stopping to observe a deer. She is grabbed from behind by Jimmy, who covers her mouth so that Shane can shoot the deer with his bow. Furious, Abby stomps on Jimmy's toe and yells, causing Shane to miss, and she then runs away. She later participates in a scavenger hunt for the wedding party planned by Henry and Trish. She is on the blue team with Richard Allen, Lucy Daramour, and Cal Vandeusen, who has been tricked into switching teams by Sully. The search becomes stalled at the Cannery, and Abby is approached by Kelly Seaver, who thanks her for breaking up the fight the night before. Kelly brings up the subject of their mothers' deaths and confides in Abby that she can't move on from the incident because she is surrounded by it every day. When Abby goes to the restroom, she is startled by Kelly, who says that she believes Wakefield is still alive. Their discussion is interrupted when Shane Pierce enters and makes fun of them. Kelly apologizes for his behavior outside, and Abby decides to follow Cal and find the other group. She runs into Jimmy, however, and after a brief conversation, she decides to walk back to the Candlewick.

Abby confronts Jimmy about Shane. ("Crackle")
At the hotel, Abby is surprised by Kelly, who asks her if she can go back to LA with her. Abby tries to avoid the question, and an embarrassed Kelly withdraws, bumping into J.D. on the path. Abby returns to the Candlewick, and runs into Henry. Henry asks her if she skipped out on the scavenger hunt, and Abby claims she finished it. Abby later goes to visit Henry at his cabin and finds him cleaning up blood from a deer head that had been placed in his bathtub. Abby tells Henry that Jimmy and Shane were hunting deer earlier that day. Henry is angry, but Abby tells him not to take any action. Instead, she goes to talk to Jimmy herself, and he promises to get Shane to back off. He also opens up to her about how much everyone missed her, especially her dad.

Abby pays a visit to Kelly and tells her that she has changed her mind about having Kelly stay with her in LA. Kelly is thrilled. As she leaves, Abby notices a partially clothed J.D. walking around inside Kelly's house. Abby later attends a bonfire party at Harmon beach, and witnesses Henry punch out Shane. After the chaos calms down, Chloe Carter notices that Cal is missing. Abby sets out to find Cal with Chloe, Malcolm Ross, and Sully, who reveals that, earlier in the day, he found Cal caught in a trap, hanging upside down in the woods, but he forgot to return to rescue him. The group locates Cal still alive, and they cut him down.

The next day (in "Ka-Blam"), Abby is in good spirits and fools around in the pool with Sully, Malcolm, Danny Brooks, Joel Booth, and Beth Barrington. However, the fun is interrupted when Charlie arrives and informs her of Kelly's apparent suicide. Abby is shocked, citing how happy Kelly seemed the previous day, but she holds back telling him that she saw J.D. in Kelly's house.

Becoming More Aware
Abby immediately goes to tell J.D. the news, and he simply reacts, "That's wierd." J.D. informs Abby that Wakefield's name was tattooed multiple times on Kelly's body. Abby goes to the police station and confronts her father, telling him that he isn't taking Kelly's death seriously enough. She leaves to go talk to Nikki, who had found Kelly's body. Nikki believes that Kelly's visions of Wakefield were ultimately what caused her death. She confides in Abby that Shane was abusive towards Kelly when they were together. Abby goes to Shane's house to question him and finds J.D. in a shed, bound and gagged and with a noose around his neck, his feet barely supported by a chair. Shane arrives, and, in order to buy some time, Abby goes off on a tangent about how Wakefield killed Kelly. Charlie arrives, and, in the scuffle, J.D. is knocked off the chair. Shane grabs J.D. as Abby runs to cut the rope holding him up, saving him. Shane is arrested, but Abby tells her father that she believes Shane to be innocent.

Abby and Jimmy reconnect. ("Bang")
The next day ("Bang"), Abby spends time with Nikki at the Cannery and shows her the scrapbook she is working on as a wedding present. Jimmy comes in, and Abby offers to help him with his deliveries if he'll give her a ride to the newspaper office. After the last delivery, the dispatcher tells Jimmy that his girlfriend, Julia, needs help. Curious, Abby offers to go along, where she discovers that Jimmy's "girlfriend" is Julia Mitchell, an elderly woman who Jimmy often helps. Abby leaves after Jimmy agrees to help Julia get her groceries, and Abby heads to the Harper's Globe newspaper office to pick up an article for her scrapbook.

On the counter at the Harper's Globe office, Abby notices several articles about the Wakefield murders. Behind the counter, Robin Matthews asks Abby if she knows about the murders, and she tells Abby that she is unsure who ordered the articles. Spooked, Abby leaves and is almost hit by a car driven by Karena Fox, the town psychic. Abby ends up dropping the scrapbook into a puddle. Defeated, Abby rejoins the wedding party at the Candlewick. Maggie interrupts and leads the women to the patio where all of Trish's late mother's china has been shattered. Shea Allen suspects that her daughter Madison may be responsible. Abby goes to look for Madison, and finds her sitting on the floor playing with flower petals, chanting, "One by one." Madison tells Abby that the spirits told her that she wouldn't get to be a flower girl. Abby becomes more frightened later at Trish's bachelorette party when Karena has a very strong negative reaction after she holds Sarah Mills's necklace. Karena leaves, but she later finds Abby and tells her to leave the island because he wants her dead. Disturbed, Abby pays Jimmy a visit, and they spend the night together.

Abby discovers the attic. ("Thwack")
The next morning ("Thwack"), Abby is surprised when her father arrives at Jimmy's house to meet him for breakfast, and she is floored when she discovers that they have become friends. They agree to go out to breakfast together, and Charlie asks Abby to drop by later to look through some of her mother's things. Abby promises to do so if she isn't too busy. Abby tries to find an excuse to avoid going to her father's house, but ultimately decides to go after she finds out that the alternative is helping Henry with wedding plans. Abby arrives at the house and attempts to call her father. She lets herself in after she leaves him a message. She goes through her old room, and then goes into the attic, where she discovers articles about the Wakefield murders and her mother's autopsy photos. After some more digging, she discovers articles about more recent murders that her father has marked as matching Wakefield's M.O. Charlie returns home, and Abby quickly returns everything to its place and runs downstairs. Charlie attempts to apologize for sending her away, but Abby hastily leaves. She tells Jimmy about the discovery, who is reluctant to jump to conclusions.

Abby goes to the Church for the wedding rehearsal. At Maggie's request, Abby goes to turn off the church lights to darken the room for the candle-lighting portion of the ceremony. As soon as she flips the switch, a head spade attached to the chandelier falls and slices Thomas Wellington in half, killing him instantly. Everyone is hysterical ("Sploosh"), and Charlie Mills arrives to tell Abby about the discovery of Reverend Fain's body. Abby is in shock and tells him what happened, prompting Charlie to remove everyone from the Church. Once outside Abby receives another phone call playing the song "Ave Maria", and she heads back to the Candlewick with the others.

Her Own Investigation
Abby visits Henry and the Wellingtons in the aftermath of Thomas's death. Henry tells Abby of J.D.'s warning of a "final surprise", and they speculate whether J.D. could be capable of murder. Abby returns to her room and notices the window is open. As she closes it, she sees J.D.'s reflection in the glass. J.D. explains that his "surprise" for Henry had been a roman candle hidden in the unity candle. He claims to have seen Wakefield and begs Abby to follow him to a discovery he has made. J.D. leads Abby into the woods, crossing a footbridge. He pulls out a knife, startling Abby, and instructs her to look up into the tree, where she sees a pair of legs hanging. J.D. cuts the legs down, unwittingly releasing Marty Dunn's upper half from the tree, as well. Abby returns to the Inn to find Henry and tells him about finding Uncle Marty's body. Henry is less inclined to believe J.D., however, and attacks him, accusing J.D. of hating Uncle Marty. Abby pulls them apart, and she leads them to her father's Attic. Abby finds postcards addressed to Charlie reading "LIAR," and J.D. finds evidence nearby, suggesting that Wakefield may still be alive.

Abby and Henry are caught grave-digging. ("Sploosh")
Abby and the others find Charlie at the Candlewick, inform him of Marty's death, and confront him with the picture of Wakefield found in the attic. J.D. resolves to dig up Wakefield's grave, and Charlie locks him in the Candlewick's pantry. Charlie tells Abby that it is none of her business and to stay out of it, adding that he is tracking a copycat. Abby doesn't believe him and convinces Henry to help her dig up Wakefield's grave. That night, Abby and Henry dig to find John Wakefield's coffin. They uncover it and, as Henry is about to pry the top off, Charlie shines a flashlight on them. He expresses surprise that it wasn't J.D. digging, and mentions that someone let J.D. out. Henry pries the lid from the coffin, revealing a human skeleton in rags. Charlie reiterates his belief in a Wakefield copycat to Abby as Henry covers the Wakefield grave. He further suggests that the killer is pretending to be Wakefield in an attempt to conceal his motive. Abby and Charlie reconcile, and he resolves to send everyone home in the morning.

As Abby spends her final planned day on the island ("Thrack, Splat, Sizzle"), she runs into Jimmy and they discuss the past. Soon after, Henry informs Abby that in the police search of J.D.'s room they found Uncle Marty's cell phone, and they have concluded that J.D. is the one behind the murders. Henry also mentions that Trish is no longer talking to him. Abby takes Trish some breakfast, being startled by the gardener on the way, and attempts to comfort Trish. She tells her about how she was able to move past her mother's death by saying goodbye to the body, and Trish agrees to go down to the morgue. There, she says a heartfelt goodbye to her father while Abby waits for her. Trish thanks Abby for helping her and worries that things will never be the same with Henry. Abby asks Dr. Campbell to take Trish back to the Inn so she can go to her father's house for a bit. There, she runs into Cole Harkin, and he tells Abby that J.D. is innocent and suggests she ask her father about the first time Wakefield came to the island. After Charlie returns to the Inn upon catching J.D., Abby confronts him about Harkin.

Abby reunites with Jimmy. ("Thrack, Splat, Sizzle")
Charlie tells Abby that Sarah had dated Wakefield in Seattle, and she came to the island to get away. Mills tells Abby that the first time Wakefield came to the island he used a few deputies to try to convince Wakefield to leave, and there was a confrontation in which one of the deputies was badly cut by Wakefield. Mills then bumped up Wakefield's charges from assault to attempted murder of a police officer. Abby is stunned, and storms off. After calming down, Abby visits Trish and gives her a photograph she found of Henry and Trish as children. She attempts to convince Trish not to shut Henry out because of her father's death, warning her to not make the same mistakes she did following her mother's death. At the Marina, Abby apologizes to Jimmy for leaving and never contacting him. She tells him that he saved her life on the day of the Wakefield massacre, and Jimmy tells her that he had seen her there but never wanted her to feel like she owed him anything. Abby flirts with Jimmy and then kisses him.

As the wedding party prepares to leave the Island (in "Gurgle"), Abby and Jimmy say goodbye. When Shea announces that Madison is missing, the group splits up to search for her. As Abby, Henry, and Katherine search a playground near the shore, Henry thanks Abby for the picture she gave Trish, and Abby mentions that she found another photo of Henry, J.D. and their father. As they search a nearby cove, Henry finds a bloody rope and follows it to find Richard's body, impaled by a harpoon to a large tree stump. Abby receives a call on her cell phone in which Madison tells her that if anyone leaves the island, Madison will die. Abby, Henry, and Katherine immediately return to the Inn, finding that all phone service on the island has been interrupted. As dusk approaches, Jimmy returns to the Candlewick, saying that he wondered why Abby wasn't on the boat when it left. Abby and Jimmy go to the Sheriff's office to use the radio, but they find it destroyed. They also find Shane in his jail cell, and he tells them about Deputy Garrett's murder and J.D.'s escape. Shane bargains with Abby to let him out in exchange for the information about where Charlie went.

Henry walks up behind Abby, covered in blood. ("Gurgle")
Abby and Jimmy drive to Harkin's cabin and find Sheriff Mills inside. Mills yells for Abby to save the bag containing Wakefield's prison diary from the fire on the porch. Jimmy wants to take the injured Charlie to the clinic, but Charlie insists on going to the Marina. Jimmy drives to the Marina with Abby and Charlie. Charlie tells Abby to leave on Jimmy's boat and get to the mainland, but she refuses. Suddenly, Sully slams against the truck window, informing them that J.D. has escaped. Jimmy runs out, and Charlie gives Abby a second gun as she leaves. Jimmy and Abby walk slowly down the ramp onto the docks. After hearing a sound on one of the docks, Jimmy goes to investigate, leaving Abby alone. In the opposite direction, Abby hears the sound of someone struggling and walks down the dock to see who it is. She finds J.D. lying near a boat, with a mortal stomach wound and bleeding from his mouth. Abby asks who did this, and J.D. tells her, "It's you Abby... It's all about you." He then loses consciousness and passes away. Abby turns around to find Henry standing behind her, crying, with his hands covered in blood.

All About Abby
In "Seep," Sheriff Mills is taken to the clinic, and Cal begins to treat his injured leg. Charlie tells Abby to keep John Wakefield's prison diary safe. Abby goes to the next room to console Henry, who is standing over J.D.'s body. Henry then returns alone to the Candlewick, telling Abby to remain at the clinic and lock the doors. Abby later shows Wakefield's prison diary to Jimmy, and he mentions the pages from J.D.'s pocket that he gave to Henry. Abby and Jimmy return to the Candlewick, and Abby asks Henry for the missing pages. After reading the diary pages, Abby tells Henry, Trish, and Jimmy that she could be Wakefield's daughter. Overhearing the conversation, Shane spreads this news to the rest of the group, prompting Henry to argue loudly with him. At the end of the argument, all eyes are on a distraught Abby, who runs out of the room. Jimmy later finds Abby outside sitting on some steps on the hotel porch, looking over the Wakefield diary. Abby reveals to Jimmy that she fears that she is cause of the murders, and she tells him about the ominous phone calls she has received. Jimmy vows to protect Abby and suggests they go back inside.

Henry, Abby, Danny, Sully, and Trish peer into the newly-discovered tunnels. ("Seep")
When Shane denies Abby reentry to the Candlewick, Henry starts a fight with Shane. After the others break up the fight, they notice Beth is missing. As the group searches for Beth, Henry discovers a secret door to a series of underground tunnels. In the tunnels, Danny and Sully follow one blood trail, while Henry, Abby, and Jimmy take another route. Abby crawls into a small tunnel and is trapped by a falling grate. Henry and Jimmy return to find tools to free Abby, while Abby continues searching. Abby hears someone moving about in the tunnels and crawls through another small tunnel to escape. As she does, someone grabs her legs from behind and pulls her back. Abby breaks free and fires her shotgun into the tunnel behind her. Abby finds herself in another larger tunnel where she passes through a door and discovers Madison sleeping in a furnished room. The two begin to make their way out of the tunnels, climbing a ladder to a manhole grate, where they meet up with Shea and Trish who are returning to the Candlewick in Shane's truck. Trish, Abby, Shea, and Madison pull up at the Candlewick in the truck, and everyone rushes outside to meet them. Madison asks Abby if she liked the game, stating the man who took her said Abby would like it. When Abby asks Madison who kidnapped her, she replies, "Your dad, Abby... You know, the Sheriff."

In the lounge at the Candlewick, the group discusses Charlie Mills's potential motives for taking Madison as Jimmy tries to comfort Abby (in "Snap"). After he and Shane discover Katherine dead, Henry asks Jimmy to ready his boat to transport everyone off the island. Henry and Abby go to the clinic to collect Cal, Chloe, and Sheriff Mills, but they discover that Mills is missing. Henry, Abby, and Trish then go to Mills's attic to search, where they find maps of the underground tunnels, reinforcing suspicions that Mills is the murderer. As they rejoin the group at the marina, the gas dock where Jimmy and Shane are refueling Jimmy's boat explodes, destroying all the boats at the marina. Henry prevents Abby from running to help Jimmy. The group comes under sniper fire and retreats to The Cannery, baricading the door. Fearing for Jimmy, Abby verbally attacks Shane, and Shane relays the news about the deaths of the two state police officers. Fingers are pointed at Charlie again, as Shane mentions the oxygen tank near the generator. Nikki arrives, and she and Abby set about making some coffee for everyone as they discuss Jimmy. Abby blames herself, revealing the suspicions about her father, and Nikki states that Charlie changed following the 2001 murders. Abby brings Madison some tea and questions her about her kidnapper. Shea yells at Abby to stay away from Madison, and Madison notices sounds coming from the roof. Maggie falls from the roof, and she is hanged in front of the window. The group creates a diversion so that Sully and Cal can escape in Nikki's car to find a sailboat with which to escape from the Island.

Later, a Sheriff's vehicle drives up to the Cannery and deposits an unconscious Jimmy in the parking lot. Abby and the others run out to help him, and Henry and Shane carry Jimmy inside. Taped to Jimmy's hand is the key to Abby's room at the Candlewick, and this is interpreted as an invitation to Abby. Despite Henry's objections, Abby departs for the Candlewick alone. Abby arrives at the Inn and discovers her father waiting in her room. Charlie asks about Jimmy, and Abby tells him he's safe. Charlie explains that he made a deal with John Wakefield to keep Jimmy alive. Abby reminds Charlie that Wakefield is dead, and Charlie reveals that he shot Wakefield, but never found his body. Charlie tells Abby to leave and Abby refuses, but Charlie snaps at her to stay away as he is a trap. Charlie assures Abby that Wakefield is alive, and he tells her that she is not related to Wakefield. Abby notices a rope tied to Charlie's wrist, and she begins crying. She then notices a walkie-talkie nearby, and Charlie tells her that it's too late to save him. Abby realizes Charlie traded his life for Jimmy's. Charlie says that Wakefield won't stop killing, but that Abby can finish Wakefield. Charlie tells Abby he loves her before he is pulled backward through the window.

A Killer Revealed

Wakefield greets Abby. ("Snap")
Abby runs outside, discovering a rope tied to Charlie's SUV running through a pulley. She turns a corner and finds Charlie hanging. Abby begins crying, and Wakefield appears behind her, grabbing her gun. He tells Abby she looks just like her mother. Wakefield retreats as Henry and Danny appear ("Splash"). Henry restrains Abby from going after Wakefield, saying, "We gotta be smart." After Henry and Danny load Mills's body into the SUV, Abby angrily vows to kill Wakefield. Henry, Abby, and Danny then walk back to the Cannery. When they arrive, they find Shane and Nikki dead and the others missing. When the churchbell rings, Henry assumes that it is Trish calling for help, and the group makes their way to the church, where they are reunited with Trish and Chloe. Abby asks about Jimmy, discovering that he has again gone missing. Trish apologizes to Abby for suspecting Charlie. Distracted by the arrival of Sully and Cal, the group fails to notice Chloe being kidnapped by Wakefield. They realize that Chloe has been taken into the underground tunnels, one if which runs under the church. A bang is heard, and the group readies their weapons as Jimmy enters the church. Jimmy explains that he woke up in The Cannery, finding Shane and Nikki dead, and walked to the town to find it deserted, winding up at the church after hearing the bell. Henry orders the group to split up and block all known exits to the tunnels, as he, Cal, and Abby follow Wakefield. Abby uses the map to navigate through the tunnels.

Henry and Abby watch from the riverbank as Chloe falls to her death. ("Splash")
On emerging from the tunnels into a narrow, deep ravine through which a small river flows, Cal hears Chloe yelling in the distance. Wakefield appears, and Abby shoots at him, missing him. Henry and Abby follow Wakefield, leaving Cal to find Chloe. After Cal frees Chloe from a storm drain, Wakefield returns and kills Cal on a bridge high over the river. Chloe then commits suicide by falling from the bridge. Henry and Abby witness Chloe's death from the riverbank. Henry and Abby start to return to the tunnel entrance to keep Wakefield from going back after the others, but they are interrupted by the sound of a gunshot (in "Gasp"). They arrive shortly after Sully shoots and injures Wakefield. Ignoring Sully's advice, Abby does not immediately kill Wakefield, instead striking him in the face with the butt of her gun, knocking him unconscious. After instructing Sully and Danny to tie Wakefield up, Henry tells Abby that she did the right thing and that she is not a killer. They take Wakefield to the jail, and Henry locks him in a cell. Henry then goes to look for Trish, and Abby decides to retrieve Shea and Madison from Charlie Mills's attic. Back at the Sheriff's office, Shea reveals that she and Madison found a police file on Jimmy in Mills's attic. Madison sneaks into the holding area to see Wakefield and emerges, telling Abby that Wakefield wants to talk to her. Abby goes inside to see him, and he tells her that she is the reason he's been killing. Wakefield asks about Sarah Mills's relationship with Charlie, and then mentions his child with Sarah. Abby asks about Wakefield's child, and he reveals that he found his son.

A Second Killer

Abby attempts to stop Henry and Sully from shooting Jimmy. ("Gasp")
The group's suspicions that Jimmy is helping Wakefield are enhanced when Jimmy returns saying Trish has fallen over the bluff. Henry attacks Jimmy, but is restrained by Abby. Henry then agrees to go with Jimmy, Sully, and Abby to the bluff to find Trish. When they don't find Trish immediately, Henry and Sully want to shoot Jimmy, but Abby again intervenes. Trish appears saying that she slipped and fell. Near the base of the bluffs, Trish has found a boathouse with a radio. Trish leads the group to the boathouse, and Jimmy and Sully make contact with the Coast Guard on the radio. As they walk back to the Sheriff's office, Jimmy explains his past to Abby, confessing that he initially wanted to make her pay for hurting him, but that he loved her again the moment she returned. The two kiss and hug. Abby and Jimmy meet up with Shea and Madison in the woods, learning of Wakefield's escape. Abby sends Shea and Madison to the boathouse to let the coast guard know about Wakefield, and Jimmy gives Shea his rifle before they part ways. Abby and Jimmy continue to search in the woods for Henry and Trish, as, unbeknownst to them, Henry stabs Trish, killing her, a short distance away.

In "Sigh," Abby calls out for Henry as she and Jimmy hunt for Henry and Trish. Jimmy appeals for her to be quiet or she may draw Wakefield out. Abby discovers Trish lying dead on the trail and mourns her as Wakefield and Henry watch from a distance. When Wakefield asks Henry if he knows what he has to do, Henry replies that he must "kill Abby." Abby and Jimmy go to the boat house, discovering everyone is gone, along with the boat. Jimmy radios the coast guard and is informed that Sully and Henry left to meet them at the marina. As they head there, they hear a gunshot, and run toward it. Abby and Jimmy find Henry alone in the woods, and Henry explains that he just saw Wakefield. Abby asks where Sully and the others are, and Henry states that he hasn't seen them and that he has been looking for Trish. Abby and Jimmy tell Henry about finding Trish dead, but they discover her body is missing when they return to show him. Henry suggests that Trish may still be alive, feigning concern for her, and he pretends to search, leading Abby and Jimmy to the church. They find Trish's body in the church, and Abby tries to console Henry. Wakefield appears and fights with Jimmy, as Abby runs out of the church. Wakefield yells to Henry, "She's getting away," and Jimmy then realizes that Henry is helping Wakefield. Jimmy burns Wakefield in the stomach with a flare, starting a fire in the church. As Jimmy runs out, Henry shoots in Jimmy's direction, and Henry then runs after Abby as a helicopter is heard overhead. When he catches up to her, he tells her that Wakefield got Jimmy. When Henry asks about the location of the meeting point with the Coast Guard, Abby remembers a previous radio conversation and realizes that Henry has been lying. John Wakefield approaches, and Henry stabs Wakefield, saying, "not her." Wakefield calls out Henry's name, and Abby realizes that Henry is Wakefield's son and that he has been Wakefield's accomplice. Abby tries to run, but Henry throws her to the ground, knocking her unconscious.

Abby threatens Henry with a shard of glass. ("Sigh")
Sometime later, Abby awakens in a bed in a house on the island. Abby descends a staircase and begins to explore the house. Henry appears and explains that he chose Abby over Wakefield. Abby attempts to escape, but discovers all of the doors locked. She searches for a weapon, but finds no knives in the kitchen, ultimately opting to throw a glass at Henry. Henry attempts to explain that he won't hurt her, but Abby runs to her room and locks herself inside. Henry reveals that his plan is for them to live together forever as Abby had wished as a child. Later, Henry hears the sound of breaking glass upstairs, and he goes to investigate. Abby meets him on the stairs, using a broken piece of glass as a weapon, and questions him. Henry reveals that his wedding to Trish was the only way he could get Abby back to the Island. Abby says that everyone is dead and that Wakefield killed her dad and her mom. When she reminds Henry that her mom was his mom too, Henry says that he hated Sarah for throwing him away. When Abby also observes that Henry is her brother, he acknowledges that he can "do the math." Henry says that it doesn't matter, since no one else knows. Henry explains that he despised Frank and Karen Dunn for never telling him he was adopted. He tells Abby that he met Wakefield on the day of the 2001 murders and that he felt a connection with him. He was inspired by the man everyone else hated. He recounts the story of how Wakefield taught him to kill. Henry tells Abby that he is now done killing, and he has chosen life with her. Abby breaks a window and runs away into a nearby garage, where she finds Jimmy tied up. Henry catches Abby and returns her to the house, revealing his intention to force Jimmy to sign a confession, since Shea and Madison know that Wakefield had an accomplice.

Abby kills Henry. ("Sigh")
Henry later tells Abby that Jimmy has agreed to sign the confession if he can see Abby once more. Henry takes Abby to the garage to see Jimmy, where she apologizes to Jimmy for leaving him. Abby kisses Jimmy, passing to him a nail to use to pick the lock on his handcuffs. Abby enrages Henry by proclaiming her love for Jimmy. Henry strikes Abby, and she stabs Henry in the foot with an awl and runs away. Henry runs after her carrying a boarding knife, leaving Jimmy tied up in the garage. Henry corners Abby at the edge of a cliff where he discards the boarding knife to show Abby he has no intention of hurting her. Abby tells Henry that he has destroyed everything she ever loved. Henry responds, "But you have me," to which Abby replies that she doesn't want Henry. Meanwhile Jimmy has escaped and now appears, pushing Henry off the bluff and falling with him. Abby follows via a trail and finds Jimmy lying on a rocky beach. Henry walks up behind Abby, and she turns and runs Henry through the stomach with the boarding knife. As he dies, Henry tells Abby that he loves her.

Survival

Sometime after Abby kills Henry, she and Jimmy are rescued from Harper's Island by the U.S. Coast Guard, and the two safely make it to the mainland.

Background

Wakefield grew up in Tacoma, Washington. He was a fisherman that frequented the waters off of Alaska and Washington. He began dating Sarah Mills in Seattle during the 1980s. Sarah became pregnant a short time later and fled, as the relationship turned sour and she began to fear for her safety. Sarah gave the child, Henry Dunn, to local Tacoma residents Frank and Karen Dunn before fleeing to Harper's Island.

Wakefield tracked Sarah to Harper's Island, where he attempted to forcibly take her back. Sheriff Charlie Mills ordered his deputies to convince Wakefield to never return. During this incident, Wakefield cut Deputy Cole Harkin, and Wakefield was arrested. Instead of assault, Mills charged Wakefield with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, for which he was given a life sentence.

Wakefield was held at a maximum security prison in upstate Washington. He was released in 2001 for "good behavior", after completing only 17 years of his sentence. Wakefield soon returned to the island, where it is believed he went on a murderous rampage.

Following the murders, Charlie Mills shot Wakefield, who then fell from the Eastern Bluff. He was believed to have died, and the Sheriff found a body, claiming it as Wakefield's. Wakefield went into hiding.

On the day of the 2001 murders, Wakefield ran into Henry Dunn in the woods, and the two felt some sort of connection. A year later, Wakefield tracked Henry down, revealing that he was Henry's biological father. Over the next several years, Wakefield trained Henry to be a killer.

In 2008, Wakefield orchestrated a car accident on Highway 530 north of Seattle, in which three college students were killed. A fourth student, Robin Matthews, escaped uninjured, and, after learning her identity, Wakefield lured her back to Harper's Island to document his murders. Wakefield posted a series of videos showing the events leading up to the car accident on HarpersGlobe.com under the username, Dangerous Wreck, also known as "DW," an ode to the wreck itself and also presumably a reference to "Dunn-Wakefield."

Recent Events

In "Sploosh", Henry, Abby Mills, and J.D. Dunn discover evidence in Charlie Mills's Attic indicating that Wakefield is, in fact, alive, but Charlie denies this. Henry and Abby dig up Wakefield's grave and find a skeleton in the coffin.

Wakefield appears to Abby Mills. ("Snap")
Later, in "Snap," Charlie Mills admits to Abby that he never found Wakefield's body and that he buried someone else. He says that Wakefield is committing recent murders on Harper's Island. Wakefield appears shortly after Mills's murder, telling Abby Mills that she looks like her mother. Henry and Danny Brooks appear, and Wakefield retreats. Wakefield goes to The Cannery, where most of the remaining members of the wedding party are gathered, and kills both Nikki Bolton and Shane Pierce. Trish Wellington and the others escape ("Splash").

In "There Is Only One Way Out On Harper's Island", Wakefield is seen running after Robin Matthews. He almost kills her, but tempts her to kill herself in the Harper's Globe newspaper offices. Robin mock-hangs herself, and, seeing Robin apparently dead, Wakefield tells the camera, "You served your purpose," before walking away.

Later in "Splash," Wakefield is seen at the First Church of Harper's Island, where he kidnaps Chloe Carter. Wakefield escapes with Chloe from the church through an underground tunnel, and he locks her in a storm sewer behind a steel grate. Cal Vandeusen successfully rescues Chloe, but Wakefield then kills Cal and tosses him into a river. Chloe then commits suicide, rather than fall into Wakefield's hands.

In "Gasp," Wakefield is soon captured by Danny and Sully and locked in the jail by Henry. Wakefield later escapes, killing Danny. He breaks into Trish's cabin, forcing her to flee. After Henry kills Trish, Wakefield moves her body to the church.

In "Sigh", after Trish's death, Wakefield asks Henry if he knows what he has to do, and Henry replies that he must "kill Abby." Wakefield later sneaks up from behind as Henry reveals the truth to Sully. After Henry kills Sully, Wakefield fires his shotgun to summon Abby and Jimmy Mance. When Henry leads Abby and Jimmy to the church, Wakefield attacks Jimmy. As Abby runs out of the church, Wakefield yells to Henry, "She's getting away." Jimmy burns Wakefield with a flare and starts a fire in the church.

Wakefield finally dies. ("Sigh")
Later in "Sigh", Wakefield appears as Abby discovers that Henry is his son and accomplice. Henry chooses Abby over Wakefield and stabs him in the chest, telling him "not her". Wakefield falls to his knees and stares at Henry in disbelief before dying on the ground.

Harper's Island is a horror thriller/mystery mini-series created by Ari Schlossberg for CBS's 2008–2009 television season. The series premiered on April 9, 2009, at 10:00 pm ET/PT. Harper's Island had only one season with 13 episodes.[1] At least one character (or as many as five) were killed off during each episode. The first three episodes aired on Thursdays, but CBS moved the program to Saturdays during the week of April 28. The final episode aired on July 11. The series is currently being rebroadcast on the Chiller TV network.

The series was shot on Bowen Island, an island municipality about two kilometers west of Vancouver in British Columbia, and at the University of British Columbia.

The actors and actresses were not told about their characters' deaths until the day that each script was given.[2] The only actor to know the length of his contract was Richard Burgi, as his death was seen as a major turning point in the series.[3]

Cast and characters

Main cast

Guest stars

Co-Stars

Other Stars

  • Callum Keith Rennie as John Wakefield, The Legend, the perpetrator of the 2001 murders. (Although Callum Keith Rennie was not part of the 25 main stars, he was credited as a guest star)
  • Dean Wray as Cole Harkin, The Survivor, the survivor of the 2001 murders and the sheriff's former deputy.

Development

In March 2008, CBS ordered a 15-minute pilot presentation of the project. In May 2008, the show was retooled, with Jeffrey Bell coming onboard as showrunner and Jon Turteltaub as an executive producer. Schlossberg remained onboard as a co-executive producer along with Karim Zriek and Dan Shotz.[10]

Bell subsequently rewrote the first episode which Jon Turteltaub would direct. During the retooling process, six of the pilot presentation's fifteen original cast members were replaced, including Ryan Merriman (Henry Dunn), Samantha Noble (Trish Wellington), Bill Dow (Sheriff Mills) and Bill Pullman (Uncle Marty). The roles of Thomas Wellington and Hunter Jennings were also recast.[11]

Actors who remained with the show from pilot-presentation to the aired television pilot include Elaine Cassidy, Cameron Richardson, Adam Campbell, C.J. Thomason, Matt Barr, Cassandra Sawtell, Brandon Jay McLaren, Chris Gauthier and Sean Rogerson.[12]

Plot

The television show is a horror thriller/mystery, described as Scream meets And Then There Were None[citation needed].

The show takes place on Harper's Island, where John Wakefield went on a killing spree and murdered a number of people before supposedly being killed by the island sheriff, Charlie Mills. One of the victims was the sheriff's wife. After her death, the Sheriff Mills sent their daughter, Abby, to live with family in LA and she hasn't returned since. After 7 years, Abby is finally returning to the island for her best friend Henry's wedding but now the killing starts again and everyone is a suspect. The guests manage to unlock secrets of the island and of Wakefield as the series progresses.

In addition to a web series based on the show, CBS's multimedia promotion includes a live online chat on a Fancast Forum each week with the "murder victim" from the Saturday night U.S. broadcast, where questions and comments from viewers trying to solve the mystery are encouraged, as well as providing a behind-the-scenes view from the series.

The titles for the episodes of Harper's Island are onomatopoeic and based on the sound that is made when the victim dies:[citation needed]
Whap: The sound made during Uncle Marty's dismemberment.
Crackle: The sound of Lucy burning to death.
Ka-Blam: The sound of Hunter opening the hood of the boat and the shotgun shooting his face off.
Bang: The sound of Booth accidentally shooting himself.
Thwack: The sound of the headspade falling from the chandelier and going through Thomas' head.
Sploosh: The sound of the harpoon pulling Richard back after going through him.
Thrack, Splat, Sizzle: The sound of Malcolm being hit; the sound of blood; and the sound of Malcolm's hand touching the furnace.
Gurgle: The sound of J.D. bleeding to death after being cut open.
Seep: Katherine's blood seeping from the sheets of the couch after being stabbed in the back with pruning shears.
Snap: The sound of Sheriff Mills' neck snapping from a rope.
Splash: The sound of Cal hitting the water after being murdered and thrown off a bridge by John Wakefield; the sound of Chloe falling in the water after committing suicide upon witnessing Cal's death.
Gasp: The sound of Trish gasping for air after being stabbed.
Sigh: The sound of Henry sighing as he dies.

Harper's Globe

Harper's Globe is a social web series, designed to complement Harper's Island.[13] The series is created by EQAL (creators of lonelygirl15, KateModern, LG15: The Resistance) and CBS Interactive.[14] The show premiered its weekly episodes on March 18, 2009, and ran for a total of sixteen weeks. It stars Melanie Merkosky, who played the character Jennie in lonelygirl15.

Creator Miles Beckett says of the series, "The story of Harper's Globe is about a girl named Robin, with a very mysterious past, who's gone to Harper's Island to work for the newspaper, Harper's Globe, and to digitize articles from the newspaper and to create a community online for the Harper's Globe newspaper and the citizens of Harper's Island. And then she gets pulled into the story as it begins to unfold on the island."[15]

The character Ben, who was the first character to die in Harper's Island, was first seen in a Harper's Globe episode.[16] The series also features appearances by Harper's Island characters Sheriff Mills, Nikki Bolton, Maggie Krell and John Wakefield.

Young Abby and Henry say goodbye after a summer together on Harper's Island. ("Sigh") The daughter of Sarah and Charlie Mills, Abby was born on April 25, 1983 and grew up on Harper's Island.

("Whap") As she ran through the woods, Abby witnessed Wakefield killing Randall Martin with a head spade.

("Whap") In "Whap", Abby reluctantly returns to the Island after seven years to attend Henry Dunn's wedding to Trish Wellington.

Abby is stalked outside The Cannery ("Whap") Later, in the hotel bar, Henry rescues Abby from a conversation with the bridesmaids, telling her that he is looking for his brother J.D..

("Crackle") At the hotel, Abby is surprised by Kelly, who asks her if she can go back to LA with her.

Becoming More Aware Abby immediately goes to tell J.D. the news, and he simply reacts, "That's wierd." J.D. informs Abby that Wakefield's name was tattooed multiple times on Kelly's body.

("Bang") The next day ("Bang"), Abby spends time with Nikki at the Cannery and shows her the scrapbook she is working on as a wedding present.

("Thwack") The next morning ("Thwack"), Abby is surprised when her father arrives at Jimmy's house to meet him for breakfast, and she is floored when she discovers that they have become friends.

Her Own Investigation Abby visits Henry and the Wellingtons in the aftermath of Thomas's death.

("Sploosh") Abby and the others find Charlie at the Candlewick, inform him of Marty's death, and confront him with the picture of Wakefield found in the attic. J.D. resolves to dig up Wakefield's grave, and Charlie locks him in the Candlewick's pantry.

("Thrack, Splat, Sizzle") Charlie tells Abby that Sarah had dated Wakefield in Seattle, and she came to the island to get away.

("Gurgle") Abby and Jimmy drive to Harkin's cabin and find Sheriff Mills inside.

All About Abby In "Seep," Sheriff Mills is taken to the clinic, and Cal begins to treat his injured leg.

("Seep") When Shane denies Abby reentry to the Candlewick, Henry starts a fight with Shane.

("Snap") Abby runs outside, discovering a rope tied to Charlie's SUV running through a pulley.

("Splash") On emerging from the tunnels into a narrow, deep ravine through which a small river flows, Cal hears Chloe yelling in the distance.

("Gasp") The group's suspicions that Jimmy is helping Wakefield are enhanced when Jimmy returns saying Trish has fallen over the bluff.

("Sigh") Sometime later, Abby awakens in a bed in a house on the island.

("Sigh") Henry later tells Abby that Jimmy has agreed to sign the confession if he can see Abby once more.

Survival

Portrayed by: Callum Keith Rennie John Wakefield, also known as Dangerous Wreck, is the suspected perpetrator of a killing spree in 2001 on Harper's Island and the perpetrator of multiple murders in 2008. He was killed by his son and accomplice, Henry Dunn.

("Snap") Later, in "Snap," Charlie Mills admits to Abby that he never found Wakefield's body and that he buried someone else.
