As in software engineering, where Software Configuration Management (SCM) is the task of tracking and controlling changes in the software, DCM (Database Change Management) performs these same tasks for the database development.

Although database development processes are every bit as important to successful application deployments today, they are neglected by traditional SCM systems. Therefore the evolution of DCM has occurred.
