Phillip Phillips, Jr. (born on September 20, 1990), more widely known as Phillip Phillips, is an American singer from Leesburg, Georgia.[1] He is currently a Top 4 finalist on the eleventh season of American Idol.[2] At the conclusion of the elimination round of the Top 5 competition, he was the only contestant who had not been in the Bottom 3 of any week prior to the Top 5 competition and not in the Bottom 2 of the Top 5 competition.
Early life
Phillips grew up in Leesburg, Georgia, and attended Lee County High School.[1] He graduated Albany Technical College with a major in Industrial Systems Technology, but missed the graduation ceremony due to his obligations to American Idol.[3]
American Idol
Overview
Phillips auditioned in Savannah, Georgia.[4] He sang "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.[4][5] The judges then asked him to perform a second song with his guitar, and he performed Michael Jackson's "Thriller."[4][5] He advanced to the Hollywood rounds,[4] and later to the Las Vegas round.[citation needed]
On February 23, 2012, Phillips was chosen as one of the Top 24 semi-finalists.[citation needed] For the semi-finals, he performed "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins.[citation needed] He was one of the top five male vote getters and advanced to the Top 13.[citation needed] After the Top 13 performance night, Phillips was taken to a doctor for possible kidney stones.[6]
Following the Top 9 round, Lee DeWyze, winner of the ninth season of American Idol, named Phillips and fellow contestant Jessica Sanchez as his top two picks this season.[7]
