After School (Korean: 애프터스쿨; Japanese: アフタースクール and stylized as AFTERSCHOOL in Japan) is a South Korean girl group formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2009.[1] They were known as the first group to debut with a unique admissions and graduation concept in Korea, where members are added or withdrawn in a natural manner.[2] The band consists of eight members: Jungah, Jooyeon, Uee, Raina, Nana, Lizzy, E-Young and Kaeun. Former member Soyoung withdrew from the group in fall 2009, Bekah officially graduated from the group in July 2011, and Kahi will graduate in September 2012.[3][4]

Kahi and Jungah first performed alongside labelmate Son Dam Bi in 2008. After School officially debuted in January 2009 with the song "AH!" with the five original members being Kahi, Jungah, Soyoung, Juyeon, and Bekah. After concluding their debut song promotions in mid March they made a comeback with a new member UEE in early April with "Diva". Once Soyoung graduated after "Diva" promotions, two new members, Nana and Raina were added for the popular hit single "Because of You", which attained No. 1 and a triple crown on SBS's Inkigayo. Afterwards, After School released "Bang!" with the addition of Lizzy and "Shampoo" where E-Young was added. Shortly after, Bekah graduated After School and After School made their debut in Japan.

The group began a foray into the Japanese music scene in 2011 under Avex Trax with a remake of their Korean hits "Bang!", "Diva" and "Because of You". The group also released an original Japanese song titled "Rambling Girls" in January 2012. Their debut in Japan[5][6] was quite a success, as the group managed to enter the Oricon Weekly Chart at number seven.[7] The group's debut Japanese album, Playgirlz, debuted at number eight on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart.

In April 2012, Pledis confirmed the addition of Kaeun for the fifth maxi single in June.[8] On 5 June 2012, it was reported that Kahi would graduate from the group in September 2012 to conclude promotions in Japan but not participate in group activities in Korea.[9][10]

Career

2009: Debut, "Diva" and "Because of You"

After School, as a group, made an unofficial first appearance on 29 December 2008 at the SBS Song Festival, performing "Play Girlz" with Son Dam Bi. In the beginning on 2009, a few days before After School's debut, Pledis Entertainment officially announced that the group's music concept is heavily influenced by the Pussycat Dolls.[11] On 15 January 2009, Pledis Entertainment released a 30-second teaser video on Gom TV, reaching 100,000 views on the first day.[12] Consequently, the group released their debut single, "AH!" alongside their EP, New Schoolgirl on 15 January'.[13][14] On 17 January, After School made their live debut on MBC's, Music Core[15] Following promotional activities for "AH!", After School planned to continue to promote New Schoolgirl with "Bad Guy", the third track from their single. However, the track was deemed unsuitable and was banned to broadcast because a single word of profanity was in the lyrics.

During the month of April, the group announced a new member joining the group, Uee.[16][17][18][19] Alongside the announcement, the group released the second single, "Diva"[17] on 9 April 2009.[18] The group performance on 9 April 2009 on M!Countdown.[20] On 21 May, the group released their third single, a cover of Morning Musume's "Love Machine", entitled "Dream Girl".[21] In July, it was announced that the group would collaborate with popular artist, Son Dam Bi,[19][22] for digital single, "Amoled", which was released on the 16th, which was also part of promotions for Amoled, Samsung's phone.[23]

On 29 October 2009, Yoo Soyoung officially withdrew from the group to pursue an acting career. Two new members were added to the group, Raina and Nana.[13] After School made their comeback on 25 November 2009 with their single, "Because of You",[13][24] with teasers being released a day before.[25] Marking a change for the group to a more mature and sophisticated concept,[13] the song became popular, winning three Mutizen awards[26][27][28] and topping various online music charts.[29] A remixed version was released later on.[30]

2010: "Bang!", Orange Caramel and "Happy Pledis 1st Album"

On 17 March 2010, details surrounding new member, Lizzy, were announced,[31] following the release of the group's concept photos for the single album, Bang!. Pledis Entertainment simultaneously announced that the album would be released on 25 March 2010.[31]

The single's concept displayed the group wearing sexy marching band outfits, and it was later revealed that Kahi was the mastermind behind the concept. Kahi stated after watching the American film Drumline, she fell in love with the marching band style and wanted to do a marching band concept ever since she took to the stage as an After School member. The group practiced playing the drums for five months with a trainer for the concept. It was the first release to feature third generation After School member Lizzy. The title track reached number seventeen on the Gaon 2010 digital yearly charts with 2,374,731 copies sold.

Members Raina, Nana, and Lizzy formed a sub-unit Orange Caramel and released their first mini-album on June 2010. Orange Caramel’s concept is more lighthearted and sweet unlike many girl groups that have recently taken on darker, sexier concepts.

On 6 December 2010, Pledis Entertainment released After School's comeback album Happy Pledis 1st Album that consisted of 4 tracks, "Love Love Love" as their album single, "Someone Is You" and 2 instrumentals of the two songs. Pledis had planned a series of "Happy Pledis" albums with their artists After School, Son Dambi and Orange Caramel as a surprise gift for the fans. A portion of the profits from the "Happy Pledis" albums would be donated to the “Save the Children” organization. Bekah did not take part nor participated in the promotions for this album due to her two month break in Hawaii visiting her parents.

2011: Virgin, Japanese debut and A.S. Red/Blue

On 27 January, Pledis Entertainment stated that they had signed a contract with a Japanese record label in order to begin activities in Japan by the end of March.[32] After School then kicked off their Japanese activities by collaborating with Japanese R&B superstar Namie Amuro; featuring in the song 'Make It Happen' for her collaboration album.[33] In March 2012, the song was nominated for Best Collaboration at the MTV Music Video Awards Japan 2012.

Pledis Entertainment announced on 13 April that After School would be making a comeback later that month with a full-length album; the title track being composed by Japanese producer Daishi Dance.[34] Teaser photos for the comeback album were subsequently released on the 18th; the first of the photos were of newcomer to the group E-Young. Pledis Entertainment also said the release date of the album would be on the 29th.[35] A second photo was released a day after, featuring Lizzy, Raina and Nana (who were dubbed the 3rd generation), and a third featuring Uee (second generation). On the 20th, the album's full tracklist was released along with the title track titled 'Shampoo' and the final teaser photo of the remaining original members.[36] A music video teaser was uploaded onto the Pledis Entertainment Official YouTube channel on the 25th, and the full audio track for 'Shampoo' was uploaded to the internet two days later. After School's first album Virgin was released on the 29th, with the full music video for 'Shampoo' being released later that day. The music video for 'Let's Step Up', the intro track for the Virgin album was released with After School performing a tap-dance routine, which was praised internationally by tap dancers such as Joseph Wiggan.[37][38] After School began promotions for the song 'Shampoo' starting with KBS's Music Bank.[39] On 23 July 2011, the album was released in the Philippines, along with Bang! and Happy Pledis 1st Album, and the album debuted at number one on the Philippines AstroChart with Bang! debuting at number two and Happy Pledis 1st Album debuting at number three.[40]

It was revealed that After School would officially debut in Japan on 17 August, with a Japanese version of 'Bang!'. They will also perform a solo concert on 17 July at Akasaka BLITZ in Tokyo.[5] However, Bekah left the group prior to the Japanese debut to become a designer, and has since released her graduation work, a solo track titled Take Me To The Place.

In July, Pledis announced that After School will be separated into two sub-units, A.S. Red & Blue as part of the group's second comeback project for the year.

The group made their debut in Japan on 17 August 2011, with the release of their first Japanese single, "Bang!", which peaked at number seven on the Oricon Weekly Chart.[41] After School participated in the prestigious 'a-nation' concert tour as part of their Japanese promotions.[42]


After School's second Japanese single, "Diva", was released on 23 November 2011. The single was accompanied with a new Japanese song called "Ready to Love".[43]

"Happy Pledis 2012", a follow-up of "Happy Pledis" charity single, was released on 1 December 2011. It is a family album that features all Pledis artists, including Son Dambi and an yet-to-debut band named Pledis Boys. A portion of the ‘Happy Pledis’ earnings will be donated to UNICEF to help look after those in need, and the album is also a gift to the fans who have shown the artists so much love and interest.[44] The group will team-up with SHIBUYA109 for a “Christmas Campaign”, which includes an upcoming concert.[45][46][47]

After School ended the year by headlining the MTV EXIT Live concert along with American band The Click Five on 17 December 2011 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.[48][49]

2012: Playgirlz, Japanese tour, "Lady Luck/Dilly Dally", "Flashback" and Kahi departure

After School's third Japanese single was a double A-side single consisting of two songs, "Rambling Girls" and a Japanese remake of their 2009 hit "Because of You". The single was released on 25 January 2012, and debuted at number six on the Oricon Daily Singles Chart.

After School's first Japanese album, Playgirlz, was released on 14 March 2012.[50] The album contains all their Japanese singles plus a Japanese version of their latest Korean single, "Shampoo", and 6 original Japanese songs. The regular edition of the album also includes a Japanese version of Orange Caramel's, a sub-unit of After School, "Shanghai Romance" as a bonus track. On 29 February 2012, After School digitally released a promotional single, "Just in time", to promote the new album which was released the following month.[51] "Just in time" is also used in a Samantha Thavasa commercial featuring After School themselves. After School are also models for Samantha Thavasa.[52]

In March 2012, After School, who are keeping busy in both Korea and Japan, were recently selected as representatives for the Japanese food company Hanryuen. The company presents Korean food, including Bibimbap (boiled rice with assorted mixtures) and a variety of fusion foods.[53][54]

On 14 March 2012, After School's first Japanese album, Playgirlz, was released in Japan. The album debuted at number six on the Oricon Daily Album Chart, with estimated sales of around 13,000 on the first day, and number nine on iTunes Japan.[55] The album debuted at number eight on the Oricon Weekly Album Chart with sales of 16,000.[56]

After School will be starting their first Japanese tour titled Playgirlz in April. With a total of four dates, the tour is scheduled to kick off at the Zepp Tokyo on April 27, followed by the Zepp Nagoya on April 28 and Namba, Osaka on April 30. The tour will then finish on June 17 at Tokyo Dome City Hall.

On 9 April 2012, Pledis revealed a brand new member would be added to the group. The following day, the member was officially revealed to be Kaeun, who would join them for their fifth single, released on 21 June 2012.[57] It was also confirmed that After School would release their sixth Korean single, in the Autumn.

Avex Trax announced through After School's official Japanese website on 23 April 2012, that they will release their fourth Japanese single, "Lady Luck/Dilly Dally", on 13 June 2012. The single is a double A-side single and the regular edition also contains an additional track, "Slow Love", which is the song used on the Eyefull Home commercial.[58]

It was officially confirmed that Leader Kahi will officially graduate from the group to pursue a solo album and stay with the company and studying acting. She will stay with the group until September, before leaving the group.

On 11 June 2012, the first teaser image, featuring all members, for the comeback was released.[59] Later that day the title of the maxi-single was revealed, "Flashback", along with the tracklist. The following day, a second teaser picture was released featuring third generation member Lizzy, which portrayed that the group are returning to their sexy concept as Lizzy was seen wearing black mesh clothing and was in a seductive, sultry pose.[60] The individual member teasers then continued with teaser pictures from Uee, Jungah, Nana, Raina, Jooyeon, E-Young and Kaeun in that order. A music video teaser was revealed on 16 June 2012 which gained over 100,000 views in less than 24 hours. The music video was unveiled at midnight on 20 June 2012 along with the maxi single being released online.[61] The title track, "Flashback", went onto achieve an "all-kill" by topping all major online music charts in South Korea.[62]

Endorsements

After School has endorsed many products since their debut. In 2009, After School participated in promotions for Samsung's Amoled phone with label-mate Son Dam Bi. To promote the phone, they produced a song titled "Amoled" and an accompanying music video. The group was chosen as commercial models for cosmetics brand The Saem in 2011, as well as promoting a new range of shoes by Landrover.

In Japan, they've collaborated with Hello Kitty for the release of their Japanese debut single "Bang!", and again in 2012 for their first Japanese album, Playgirlz. After School were models for SHIBUYA109, starring in a Christmas campaign commercial which featured their third Japanese single, "Rambling Girls/Because of You". In 2012, the group were representatives for the Japanese food company Hanryuen, and starred in a commercial for the deodorant brand Rexena,[66] which featured a preview of After School's fourth Japanese single, "Dilly Dally".

After School's commercials with Samantha Thavasa have featured the songs "Just in Time" from their debut Japanese album Playgirlz and "Lady Luck" from their upcoming second double A-side single "Lady Luck/Dilly Dally".[67]
