The National Archives of Norway (Riksarkivet) is the institution responsible for preserving archive material from Norwegian state institutions, as well as contributing to the preservation of private archives.[1] It does this work in cooperation with the regional state archives, together with which it forms the National Archival Services of Norway (Arkivverket).[1] The National Archives was founded in 1817.[2] Henrik Wergeland was appointed as the first national archivist in 1841.[3]
In 2012 media revealed that copies of testimony to the Gjørv Commission from several politicians and officials has been sealed by the National Archives.[4] This sealing of testimony has been criticized by the General Secretary of Norsk Redaktørforening, Nils Øy.[5][6][7][8]
