Template:Spanish name 2 Antolín Alcaraz Viveros (born 30 July 1982 in San Roque González) is a Paraguayan footballer who plays as a centre back for Wigan Athletic in the Premier League.
Club career
Hailing from a humble background, Alcaraz worked throughout his teenage years as a builder’s assistant in his hometown of San Roque Gonzalez. His footballing skills came to light during a game with friends at his local club Teniente Fariña in Ñemby, Gran Asunción. Watching from the sidelines was a director of Argentinian club Racing Club, who promptly whisked him off to Avellaneda. Alcaraz did not disappoint his prospective buyers, who were nevertheless unable to raise the money to buy him, subsequently arranging for him to go on loan to Serie A outfit Fiorentina. The Italian side would later experience bankruptcy and regrouped in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, Italy's fourth division. Failing to make an appearance in Serie A, He then had a trial at U.S. Città di Palermo but eventually left for Portuguese side S.C. Beira-Mar.[1][2] After seven appearances in half a season, Alcaraz became a defensive mainstay at the top division team, eventually also gaining club captaincy; in 2005–06, he helped the Aveiro side return to the top flight, appearing in 31 matches.
On 30 April 2007, Alcaraz was signed by Club Brugge in Belgium, with the deal being effective as of July.[3] After a slow first season, he also eventually became first-choice here, helping his team to two third-places and one second.
On 14 May 2010, Alcaraz signed with Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee,[4] as his contract with Brugge was due to expire at the end of June.[5] He scored his first goal for the club against Sunderland on 11 September 2010, netting in the 86th minute for an eventual 1–1 home draw.[6]
On 6 November 2011, Alcaraz caused widespread controversy when replays showed him spitting at Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Richard Stearman during Wigan's 1–3 defeat at Molineux Stadium,[7] and served a three-game suspension due to his actions.[8] He later issued an apology.[9]
On 7 May 2012, Alcaraz scored the winning goal in the Blackburn Rovers vs Wigan Athletic game which was the 37th game of the season, to retain Wigan Athletic's safety but to also relegate Blackburn Rovers to the Football League Championship.[10]
International career
At the age of 26 (November 2008), Alcaraz received his first call-up to the Paraguayan national team.[11] He was picked for the squad present at the 2010 FIFA World Cup; on June 14, in the group stage opener against Italy, in just his seventh international, Alcaraz scored from a set piece powering home a header in a 1–1 draw in Cape Town,[12] and played all the matches and minutes for the eventual quarterfinalists.
Alcaraz was again first-choice for Paraguay during the 2011 Copa América, held in Argentina. On 13 July, he scored the 1–1 equalizer against Venezuela in an eventual 3–3 group stage draw, with the national team eventually finishing runner-up. On 17 July, Alcaraz was sent off during extra time of the 1/4 final against Brazil after an altercation with Lucas Leiva.
