Dhoom 3 (Hindi: धूम ३ ;English: Blast 3) is an upcoming action thriller Hindi film, written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra. The film will feature the two main characters portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra from the Dhoom series while Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif will play lead villains. The film is scheduled for a Christmas 2013 release.[2]

Development

On 2 January 2011, the producer of the previous Dhoom films, Aditya Chopra confirmed that the third installment of the Dhoom series would begin principal photography at the end of 2011. Initially, the producers and the lead actor Aamir Khan wanted to release the film on Christmas of 2012,[3] but the plan was scrapped in favor of an early release date in 2013, mainly due to a forecast that a Christmas release would force a rushed post-production schedule, which was unfavorable given the high degree of technicality needed for the film.[4]

Casting

"I am very excited for Dhoom 3 [...] specially excited because Aamir joins the series as the lead antagonist. His joining the cast completely raises the level of the franchise as he brings forth a high sense of professionalism and perfection."

Bachchan talking about Khan's casting as the antagonist[5][6]

Aamir Khan was signed on to essay the lead role and the antagonist, while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles as police officers. Though Rimi Sen was not approached to play her character Sweety again, however, in an interview she stated that she won't do any guest appearances henceforth.[7] Katrina Kaif was signed on as the lead heroine, starring opposite Khan.[3] Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, replacing Sanjay Gadhvi who directed the first two franchise of Dhoom.[3] Both the lead actors took up special preparations for the roles that they are playing. Khan reportedly learnt ballet,[8] aerobatics[9] and French technique of parkour,[10] a method of movement focused on negotiating obstacles with speed and efficiency, while Kaif took paragliding training and singing lessons.[11] Bachchan reportedly lost nine kilos of weight to prepare for his role in the film.[12]Olliver Keller was signed to direct the stunt scenes.[13]

Filming

Filming was supposed to commence from November 2011, with scenes involving Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra filmed first,[14] but Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's maternal call where Abhishek requested for the paternity leave and shooting was eventually postponed to January 2012. Also, leave grants to Bachchan were on an optimistic note as Chopra had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the leading lady for Dhoom 2, else contrary to this the schedule would have been unaltered. In January 2012, Aamir Khan had prior commitments especially with his TV show Satyamev Jayate and hence, the schedule was pushed to June 2012. Again in June 2012, Aamir postponed the filming schedule by a month as he opined his hair-do was not apt. He also wanted some more time to maintain his body and look to fit well into the role of a gymast. Additionally, Khan wanted to concentrate on marketing and promotions of his 2012 film Talaash.[15]Without causing further delays, filming commenced with Jackie Shroff and the child artist, playing the role of childhood Aamir Khan on 8 June 2012 at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai.[16] Aamir Khan joined the filming in July and filmed for only 5 days at Yash Raj Studios as his major portions would be shot in Chicago, U.S.A.. Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra flew to the U.S. on 4 August 2012 to complete a mammoth 3 months schedule. On arrival to India in December 2012, Bachchan stated that the shooting was complete by fifty percent and would resume again, in Mumbai.[17]

3D Format

Reportedly, Aditya Chopra, wanted to make the film in 3D after observing the the successes of Haunted, Ra.One, Don 2 , Dangerous Ishq , Raaz 3, where these films glimpsed that Indian audiences have opened up to 3D cinema viewing, however, actor Aamir Khan was not convinced as he came up with suggestions that making a 3D film needs more expertise.[18]As of September 2012, there is no conformation of a 3D making from YRF studios.[19]

IMAX Format

Dhoom 3 is considered as the first Indian film to be released on IMAX screens in India. It will be played on a limited number of enhanced IMAX screens using the Digital Media Remastering (DMR) technology, besides of course in 2D and 3D versions. IMAX Corporation currently has 14 IMAX theaters open or contracted to open in India. In late September 2012, IMAX Filmed Entertainment Chairman and President Greg Foster struck partnership with Yash Raj Films and looked forward to work with the director and the producer on this front.[20]

Music

It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment.[21]

Marketing and Promotions

Marketing

First of its kind, the title logo of the film was released in a video that credited the main roles of the film. The score for the video constituted paced beats and electric guitars and was released on Christmas 2012 through Yash Raj Film's official Youtube channel, confirming the film to be Christmas 2013 release. The first working as well as promotional poster was also released exactly a year prior to the actual release date of film.[2]

In the Media

"If you ask anyone about my next release .. everyone seems to be talking about Dhoom 3 only and honestly, we haven’t even shot a single frame of the film.

—Khan talking on the hype of the film prior to its production[22]

Even prior to the beginning of the principal photography the film enjoyed a widespread media coverage.[23][24] Because of the box office success [25] and positive reviews from audiences [26][27] for Dhoom 2, the previous installment in the Dhoom series, the sequel had been anticipated by the audience.
