Tara Priya (born Tara Priya Chandra, December 3, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter and vocalist from San Francisco, California. Priya’s music reflects a wide variety of influences, primarily soul, pop and jazz.
Biography
Tara Priya was born Tara Priya Chandra in San Francisco to a Persian mother, the niece of poet Sohrab Sepehri, and an Indian father. She attended The Harker School in San Jose prior to Columbia University in New York City.[1] Priya majored in economics while studying jazz and classical voice. After graduating from Columbia two years early, Priya briefly worked in finance before focusing on her career as a singer-songwriter.[2] Priya moved to Los Angeles in late 2010 to further this goal, where she has written and recorded two EPs, Tara Priya (2011) and Goodbye, Romeo (2012).
Career
Shortly after moving to Los Angeles and releasing her first EP, Tara Priya (2011), Priya won the Eighteenth Annual Billboard Song Contest,[3] the Great American Song Contest,[4] the Dallas Songwriters Contest,[5] and was nominated as one of the Best Emerging Artists by The Deli Magazine.[6] Priya was also selected as one of three "Pop" genre finalists of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.[7]
While writing and recording her second EP, Goodbye, Romeo (2012), Priya toured the world to perform in festivals and for various media outlets, most notably as a guest performer on BBC London 94.9 in November and December 2011.[8] That year had also seen her perform at the San Diego County Fair, the MidPoint Music Festival in Cincinnati,[9] Indie Week Canada in Toronto, The NAMM Show[10], and the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in India[11]. In January 2012, Priya released her first radio single, "Run Like Hell", in Japan, where it peaked at number 25[12] on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, and number six[13] on the Billboard Japan Digital and Airplay chart. This led to two subsequent tours of Japan, through Tower Records and Billboard Live, respectively.[14]
Clear Entertainment signed Priya to their management roster.[15] This was following Priya's announcement via Twitter that she was recording in London with producer Steve Booker. The following March, Priya showcased at SXSW 2013 in Austin, TX.[16]
