Sonic Lost World (ソニック ロストワールド, Sonikku Rosuto Wārudo) is an upcoming action-adventure platforming video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games. It is being developed by Sonic Team and will be released by Sega for Nintendo's Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms in late 2013.

Gameplay

The player controls Sonic the Hedgehog in an action platformer setting with gameplay taking place in various world largely influenced by earlier Genesis-era games.[3] Levels range from side-scrolling 2D levels to fast-moving linear levels to ones taking place on spherical worlds similar to the cancelled Sonic X-treme.[4][5][6] A new control system has been created for this game which fits in with the levels. Moving the directional controls will move Sonic at a moderate pace, allowing more precision, whilst holding down a trigger button will engage his running speed, with an additional trigger allowing Sonic to use his Spin Dash move. A parkour system is introduced, allowing Sonic to maneuver across obstacles and run up walls whilst the run trigger is held. Sonic can also perform a kick attack which is more powerful than his homing attack. The game will also see the return of the Wisp powers introduced in Sonic Colors which are now activated using the touchscreen. Like Colors, there will be certain powers unique to each version of the game.[7] There is also a Support Mode where a player using the Wii U GamePad can assist another controlling Sonic with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Along the way, Sonic can rescue small animals by destroying enemies and collect Red Rings which unlock additional content and Gold Cannons that unlock new paths.[8][3] Off-TV Play will also be supported with the game.[9]

The 3DS version of the game will also contain fully 3D gameplay, unlike the handheld versions of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.[3] The 3DS version will not, however, be a watered down port, but rather, a separate game with different level design.[10] It will also offer four player local and online multiplayer modes, and connectivity with the Wii U version of the game.[10]

Plot

While in pursuit of archnemesis Doctor Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog travels to a world known as Lost Hex, where he learns Eggman has harnessed the power of a group of native villains known as the Deadly Six. When the Six rebel, however, Sonic and Eggman are forced to work together to stop them for the sake of the planet.[3][11]

Development

A trademark for the title Sonic Lost World was filed by Sega in May 2013, and pointed out by website Siliconera on May 15, 2013.[12][13] It was first revealed on the May 17, 2013 in a Nintendo Direct announcement.[14] The game was announced as part of an exclusive partnership between Sega and Nintendo for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.[13] It is one of three games in this partnership, the other ones being the fourth entry to the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, and another yet to be announced Sonic title.[15] Sega reported that more on the game would be revealed prior to E3 2013,[16] and that the game will contain both returning and new original characters, both in enemies and friends of Sonic.[1] On May 23, 2013, Sega posted a teaser, showing silhouette images of six new characters, and stating that more would be revealed on May 29.[17] The first trailer for the game was released on May 28, a day earlier than previously announced.[8] Dimps will be co-developing the Nintendo 3DS version.[18] On June 7th, Sega released new gameplay of the footage in the form of an E3 demo confirming a new wisp, elemental shields, and how the controls will work in the game[19]
