Social Point is a social network game developer for web and mobile with headquarters in Barcelona, Spain. The company began creating free online games for Facebook users in 2008. As of August 2013, Social Point occupies 3rd place in AppStat's Games Developers Leaderboard, with an estimated monthly 51,436,058 monthly active users (MAU).[1]
The name "Social Point" is a reference to the company's mission statement which is to connect players through social gameplay.[2]
History
Social Point was founded by Andrés Bou and Horacio Martos in 2008. Between 2008 and 2011 they launched some 25 online social games. In January 2011 Social Point released battle and strategy game, Social Empires, which ranks in 19th position in Appstats' Game Leaderboard.[3]
In July of 2012 Social Point announced it had closed a Series B round of venture capital funding to the total of $10 million. TechCrunch reported that funding for the B.1 round was provided by Nauta Capital, Idinvest and BBVA.[4] Spanish newspaper Expansión carried an article in February 2013 stating that Greylock Partners had invested 2.9 million euros in Social Point in December of 2012.[5]
In November 2011 Social Point released Social Wars and a test mobile version of Social Empires.
A year later, in May 2012, the company announced the release of Dragon City for Facebook. The game targets mid-core players, allowing them to raise their own dragons and create a Dragon City on floating islands. In December 2012 The Next Web ran an article announcing that Dragon City was ranked #2 in Facebook's 25 top rated games that year. [6]As of August 2012, it ranked 4th in AppStats' Game Leaderboard, with an estimated 30, 149, 600 MAU.[7]
Social Point announced an iOS version of Dragon City in March 2013. Initial figures showed that the mobile game had amassed 1.3 million daily active users (DAU) within the first five months of release.[citation needed] An Android version of Dragon City is slated for release globally in autumn 2013. Amongst its projects for 2013/4 Social Point has announced that it will be releasing a new combat and strategy title, Monster Legends.
Corporate Social Responsibility
In 2013 Social Point announced its partnership with the mSchools initiative, a multi-year, multi-faceted Education initiative led by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona. [8]The initiative aims to tackle dropout rates and low attainment in Spanish schools, and help prepare school children for higher education and jobs in the digital sector. Social Point has confirmed its staff will be involved in mentoring school children as part of the App Education Course element of the initiative: a computer science elective that will be offered Catalan high schools to teach students about application design and prototype development.[9] [citation needed]
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya published an article in October 2012 announcing that Social Point was an official collaborator in its Masters program in Videogames Design.[10]
Statistics
Statistics published by AppStats in August 2013 put Social Point in 3rd place in a ranking of online game developers for Facebook in terms of DAU. In the same month VentureBeat named Social Point one of the 20 fastest growing mobile startups in the world. [11]
Awards
Social Point was awarded Public Voted Best Social Network Game at Gamelab in 2012 for Social Wars and in 2013 for Dragon City mobile. Dragon City was also named Best Game on a Social Network at Gamelab 2013.[12]
