List of episodes

The third season of animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, developed by Lauren Faust, originally aired on The Hub in the United States. The series is considered to be the fourth generation (G4) of the My Little Pony franchise, following earlier lines and television show tie-ins in the 1980s and 1990s. Season 3 of the series premiered on November 10, 2012, on The Hub, an American pay television channel partly owned by Hasbro.

The show follows a studious unicorn pony named Twilight Sparkle as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie. Each represents a different face of friendship, and Twilight discovers herself to be a key part of the magical artifacts, the "Elements of Harmony". The ponies share adventures and help out other residents of Ponyville, while working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.

Hasbro selected animator Lauren Faust as the creative director and executive producer for the show. Faust sought to challenge the established "girly" nature of the existing My Little Pony line, creating more in-depth characters and adventurous settings, incorporating Hasbro's suggestions for marketing of the toy line.

Development

A sneak peek of two future songs in Season 3, "The Failure Song" and "The Ballad of the Crystal Empire" (both from the first episode), was unveiled at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con.[1] Part of a continuing plot in this season is a journey that Twilight Sparkle undertakes that ultimately leads to her to be named a Princess in the season finale, which includes becoming an alicorn. Meghan McCarthy said that the intent was to show that they were building a "unique mythology around being a princess", and to show girls that while they cannot be princesses themselves, they can live to the ideals of one by "shar[ing] the gifts that they have been given with others".[2] As of Season 3, the song titles make their appearance in the closing credits, along with the name of the composer Daniel Ingram and the name of the lyricist.

Cast

As with previous seasons, voice actors for this season include Tara Strong playing the role of Twilight Sparkle, along with Rebecca Shoichet as her singing voice. Tabitha St. Germain and Kazumi Evans portray Rarity and her singing voice respectively. Ashleigh Ball voices both Applejack and Rainbow Dash. Andrea Libman portrays both Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie (with Shannon Chan-Kent as the singing vocals for Pinkie Pie, with Libman occasionally singing as well), and Cathy Weseluck plays the role of Spike. Supporting voice actors include Nicole Oliver as Princess Celestia, Tabitha St. Germain as Princess Luna, Claire Corlett playing the role of Sweetie Belle, with Michelle Creber as her singing voice (who also plays the role of Apple Bloom), and Madeleine Peters voices Scootaloo.

Minor characters for this series include Kelly Metzger as Spitfire, Brynna Drummond playing the role of Babs Seed, Chantal Strand as Diamond Tiara, Shannon Chan-Kent portraying Silver Spoon, Tabitha St. Germain as Granny Smith, Peter New playing Big Macintosh, Brenda Crichlow as Zecora, Lee Tockar as Snips and Richard Ian Cox as Snails.[citation needed] This season hires the vocals of Jim Miller playing King Sombra, Kathleen Barr as Trixie, Britt Irvin as Lightning Dust, John de Lancie playing the voice of Discord, Veena Sood voicing Ms. Harshwhinny, and Patricia Drake as Ms. Peachbottom.[citation needed]

Episodes

The third season began on November 10, 2012 (with "The Crystal Empire - Part 1"), and ended on February 16, 2013 (with "Magical Mystery Cure"). Unlike the show's first two seasons, it only contains 13 episodes.
