Development

After Nagarjuna announced a multistarrer project starring three generations of his family on his home banner Annapurna Studios, Vikram Kumar was recruited to direct the film, thanks to the script he penned for the film and his previous successful film Ishq.[4] After much speculation, the film's title was announced as Manam in March 2013.[5] The film was launched in Annapurna Studios on June 3, 2013. Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya and Vikram Kumar, along with personalities of Tollywood, participated in the function.[6] In August 2013, a photo shoot was conducted on Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Nagarjuna before they enter the sets of the film for regular shoot.[7] Later on, after the release of the first look, it was reported that Manam is based on the English Sci-fi movie Back to the Future and in this film, Akkineni Nageswara Rao would play the role of Nagarjuna's son and Nagarjuna would play the role of Naga Chaitanya's son, a complete reversal of the reality.[8]

Anoop Rubens was recruited as the Music director, who was a part of Vikram's previous film Ishq.[9] Harshavardhan of Amrutham was recruited to pen the dialogues in the film after his critically acclaimed work in Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde as Dialogue and Screenplay writer.[10] P. S. Vinod was recruited as the Cinematographer of the film marking his Telugu project after Panjaa which released in 2011. Brinda was recruited to compose the choreography for the songs. FEFSI Vijayan was recruited compose the fights while Tamil Art director Rajeevan was recruited to handle the Art department which marks his next film after Gautham Menon's multi age love saga Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu. Prawin Pudi and Nalini Sreeram were signed to handle the Editing and Costumes Departments repectively.[11]

Casting

Initially, the trio Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya planned to make a multistarrer film with the trio in the lead. Then the Heroines were selected. Samantha was recruited to play one of the Heroines opposite Naga Chaitanya, marking her third film with Chaitanya after Ye Maaya Chesave and Autonagar Surya.[12] Samantha sported a stylish look with a complete makeover for the film,[13] while Nagarjuna sported a traditional attire.[14] Ileana D'Cruz was the first choice of the makers to play the heroine of Nagarjuna but they backed as she demanded 2 Crore remuneration for this film.[15] Later Shriya Saran was recruited to play the other Heroine opposite Nagarjuna, marking her fourth collaboration with the actor after Santosham, Nenunnanu and Boss.[16] Annapurna Studios announced that three students from the Annapurna International School of Film and Media would be introduced in the film.[17] Kaushal Sharma, Srikar Chittarbu and Krishna Yadav were chosen and would play important roles in the film.[18] Later it was reported that Nagarjuna's younger son Akkineni Akhil would play a cameo in the film as per Akkineni Nageswara Rao's request.[19] However it was later confirmed that it was just a rumor and Akhil was not a part of the film.[20]
