Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother 2 is the upcoming second season of the Canadian reality television series Big Brother. It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, which gained notoriety in 1999 and 2000. The series is produced by Endemol USA and Insight Productions. The season premiered on March 5, 2014.[1] The series revolves around fifteen strangers living in a house together with no communication with the outside world. They are constantly filmed during their time in the house, and are not permitted to communicate with those filming them. One HouseGuest, known as the Head of Household, has the task of nominating two of their fellow HouseGuests for eviction. The winner of the Power of Veto can then save one of the nominees, forcing the Head of Household to name a replacement nominee. The HouseGuests then vote to evict one of the nominees, with the HouseGuest who received the most votes being evicted from the house. When only two HouseGuests remain, the previously evicted HouseGuests, the jury, will decide which of them will win the grand prize, which consists of a $100,000.[2][3] In addition, the winner will receive a $10,000 trip courtesy of Twistos, as well as a $25,000 home makeover from The Brick.[4]. The HouseGuests entered the house on February 27, 2014.[5]

Development

Casting for Big Brother 2 started on September 8, 2013. Applicants could go to various open casting calls held in certain cities or they could fill an application online with a video audition until October 25, 2013. This season will feature a brand new house as the show moved to a new location in Toronto for the second season. In February 2014, photos were released of the new house on Fridays, these photos were teaser photos of the new house being constructed. Entertainment Tonight Canada gave a tour of the new house on February 24, 2014[6]

Format

Big Brother is a game show in which a group of contestants, referred to as HouseGuests, live in isolation from the outside world in a custom built "house", constantly under video surveillance.[7] The HouseGuests are competing for a $100,000 grand prize.[8][9] In addition, the winner will receive a $10,000 trip courtesy of Twistos, as well as a $25,000 home makeover from The Brick.[10] The runner-up will receive a $20,000 cash prize.[11] The format of the series is mainly seen as a social experiment, and requires HouseGuests to interact with others who may have differing ideals, beliefs, and prejudices.[12][13] HouseGuests are also required to make visits to the Diary Room during their stay in the house, where they are able to share their thoughts and feelings on their fellow HouseGuests and the game.[14] While in the house, the HouseGuests are given no information from the outside world.[15] This includes the families and loved ones of the HouseGuests, whom they are not permitted to see or speak to.[16] The house features no telephones, computers, televisions, or reading material other than for religious use.[17] HouseGuests can voluntarily leave the house at any time, however, will not be able to return.[18][19] In addition, a HouseGuest can be removed from the house at any time for breaking the rules.[20][21] Each week in the house, the HouseGuests will participate in various competitions to win food, luxuries, and power.[17] The HouseGuests can also be given tasks to complete in exchange for a reward, with tasks being given to HouseGuests through means of a telephone (season 1) or various props in the house.[22]

At the start of each week in the house, the HouseGuests will compete for the title of Head of Household.[23] The Head of Household for each week will have luxuries such as their own personal bedroom and free laundry service, but is responsible for nominating two HouseGuests for eviction. The Head of Household will not be able to compete in the following week's Head of Household competition, meaning that a HouseGuest could not hold the title for two weeks in a row.[24][25] The winner of the Power of Veto can choose to save one of the nominated HouseGuests, forcing the Head of Household to nominate someone in their place.[25][26] All HouseGuests excluding the Head of Household and nominees later vote to determine which of the two nominees should be evicted, and the nominated HouseGuest who received the most votes is evicted during a live episode.[25] If there is a tie in the voting, the reigning Head of Household is required to make the tie-breaker decision.[27] Unlike other versions of Big Brother, the HouseGuests may discuss the nomination and eviction process openly and freely.[25] The HouseGuests also compete in Have-Not competitions, in which the losers are required to solely eat slop for the rest of the week, as well as sleep in a special bedroom.[28] The HouseGuests also participate in weekly luxury competitions, in which those competing can win prizes. When only two HouseGuests remain, the last seven evicted HouseGuests, the jury, will return to decide which of the two should win the game.[29]
