Gulaab Gang is a 2014 Bollywood film centered on the struggle of women in the country. It is presented by Sahara Movie Studios and Bharat Shah, directed by a debutant director Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla as leads. The official Trailer was released on 10th January 2014 and was met with a mixed response. It was unable to create the usual pre-release buzz. The movie's soundtrack was released on 28th January 2014 and was also not well-received by critics. [1] [2] The film released on 7th of March 2014 under the banner of Sahara Movie Studios with a screen count of 1,600 in comparison to 850 for Movie Total Siyapaa and 800 screens for Queen hence Gulaab Gang faced very strong competition just one day before Women's Day 8 March 2014.[3]Just before days of its release, Sampat Pal, the leader of the original Gulabi Gang has filed a case against the makers of Gulaab Gang as she feels the filmmakers have no right to make a film on her life without her permission. [4] On 5 March 2014, the Delhi High Court passed a stay order against the release of the film across India [5] stating that the release will cause irreparable loss to the reputation of Pal and that "the loss of reputation can not be compensated by monetary terms". [6]high court one day later lifted the ban on Gulaab Gang[7]
Gulaab Gang collected Rs. 2.41 crore at the box office on day one which was a poor start considering budget of 25 Crore and screen count of 1,700. In overseas only Total Siyapa scored and both Queen and Gulaab Gang failed to make an impact. [8] [9] [10] [11]

Soumik Sen, who has previously been credited as the writer for the films like Anthony Kaun Hai? (2006), Ru Ba Ru (2008), Meerabai Not Out (2008) and Hum Tum Aur Ghost (2010), is directing the film. This is Sen's first directorial venture.[12]
Casting
"Actually, there were two reasons to cast Juhi Chawla for the film. The very first thing is that it was a creative decision taken by all of us... and we thought it would be great to see two iconic stars — Madhuri and Juhi — together in the film."
—Anubhav Sinha on casting Dixit and Chawla together.[13]
Initially, actress Tabu was approached to play the lead, but due to lack of funds filming could not be started.[14] Later in April 2012, Soumik Sen approached actress Madhuri Dixit for the film and narrated the story to her.[15] Later, Dixit officially announced her part in the film through her Facebook page.[16] Tabu was later approached again to play the second lead role of politician, which actress in turn declined. Actress Juhi Chawla was later approached to play the second lead and she eventually accepted the role. Chawla, who debuted in Bollywood through 1986 film Sultanat, will share screen with Dixit, who debuted in 1984 with Abodh, for the first time in their common career span of 27 years.[17][18] Dixit and Chawla were considered as competitors back in the late 1980s and 1990s.[19] In December 2012, actress Tannishtha Chatterjee was signed to play the member of Gulaab Gang along with two other actresses, Divya Jagdale and Priyanka Bose. [20]
Filming
The film tells the story of a gang of Indian women dressed in pink coloured saris, fighting against social injustice, operating in Bundelkhand Uttar and Madhya Pradesh (central India).[21] The film shooting started in October 2012. Initially, it was reported that the movie was based on Sampat Pal Devi's life to evolute "Gulabi Gang", but the director refused on this respect that he obliged her work but the movie is not based on her life.[22] The first schedule of the film involving Dixit started in December 2012 and was wrapped up in January 2013. Dixit reported that the first schedule ended with a "high energy song" choreographed by Saroj Khan.[23] Dixit and Khan together have given various hit songs to Bollywood, including "Ek do teen" (Tezaab), "Choli ke peeche" (Khalnayak), "Dhak dhak karne laga" (Beta) and lately "Maar daala" (Devdas). Dixit also got trained in rare martial art forms like Shaolin Kung Fu, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali and Shaolin Chin Na for the movie.[24] As film is based on the rural parts of India, cast including Dixit would be portraying de-glamorous roles.[25][26] In December 2012, Juhi Chawla, who is playing another lead character in the film, also joined the shoot at Kamalistan Studios, Mumbai.[27][28] Chawla is reported to play her first role with the negative shades.[29] Chawla would be playing a powerful, infamous and villainous Politician .[30]
