João Sousa (born 30 March 1989, in Guimarães) is a Portuguese professional tennis player who competes on the ATP World Tour. In September 2012, he climbed to World No. 107 in the ATP singles rankings, becoming the number-one Portuguese tennis player for the first time. In the following month, he rose to World No. 99, becoming the fourth Portuguese player to enter the top 100. Sousa's victory at the 2013 Proton Malaysian Open made him the first player from his country to win an ATP World Tour singles tournament.[2] He rose to a career-high singles ranking of World No. 44 in February 2014. He is the first and only Portuguese to enter the ATP top 50 making him the highest ranked Portuguese tennis player of all time. His coach is former player Frederico Marques and they train at the BTT Tennis Academy in Barcelona.
