Untitled

Head or Heart is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Christina Perri, released on April 1, 2014, via Atlantic Records.[1][2][3][4] It is Perri's first full-length release since her last studio album, Lovestrong. (2011). It was originally expected to be released on March 11, 2014, but was pushed back to April 1, 2014.[5]

Background and development

In 2013, Perri began tweeting and posting pictures on Instagram about the progress of her second studio using the hashtag "#albumtwo". On June 21, 2013, Perri announced that the second album was coming together.[6] "Run" and "Trust," two of the songs on the final tracklisting, had been previously performed by Perri while on tour.

On November 11, 2013, Perri announced that her first single from her new album is called "Human". The song was released on November 18, 2013 on iTunes.[7] On November 28, Perri revealed that her second studio album would be titled Head or Heart and that it's due for release in March 2014.[8] Perri confessed during an interview with Radio.com that she felt burnt out after promoting her last album, Lovestrong (2011). She revealed, "I didn’t want to do anything that wasn’t genuine, and I was afraid of phoning it in or forcing anything. [...] I remember laying on the floor of my house just crying. Good crying and sad crying at the same time. I was just trying to believe the things that had happened."[9]

Recording and production

The album was recorded in 2013 with producers Martin Johnson, Jake Gosling, John Hill and Butch Walker.[1] In December 2013 during an interview with Radio.com, Perri also revealed she had worked with Ed Sheeran on a track called "Be My Forever". She revealed, "I was the most in love I may have ever been in my whole life, which is awesome because I knew I had a happy song in me. [..] As much as I love the heart-wrenching stuff, I didn’t want to force a happy song, and I think you can always tell when a song is fake. I remember going in the studio with this guy and him looking at me and I was glowing. And I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry. I’m in love. This is going to be awful. We’re never going to write a song."[9]

Release

Singles

"Human" was released as the first single from the album on November 18, 2013.[7] As of December 9, 2013, the single has sold 43,000 downloads.[1]

"Burning Gold" will serve as the album's second single.[10]

Promotion

In support of the album, Perri will embark on a two-month tour across North America. The Head or Heart Tour is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2014, beginning April 4 in Denver, Colorado, and ending in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on May 26.[1][2]

Head or Heart has received generally mixed reviews from critics so far. James Christopher Monger of AllMusic awarded the album 3 and a half out of 5 stars, and described the album as "more confident than her debut, yet retaining much of its vulnerability".[11] In a review for The Guardian, Phil Mongredien stated that the album is "heavy on big, earnest ballads that – with the exception of the soaring 'Sea of Lovers' – are more technically proficient than engaging." The album was awarded two out of five stars.[12]
