Lila Tretikov (Russian: Ляля Третьяко́ва[1]) is a Russian-born technologist specialising in enterprise software. Emigrating to the U.S. as a teenager, she began work as an engineer in California in 1999, founded a company, obtained several software patents and eventually became chief information officer and vice president of engineering of SugarCRM, Inc. She was appointed executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation in May 2014, replacing Sue Gardner.

Early life and education

Tretikov was born on January 25, 1978.[2][better source needed] Her father is a mathematician and her mother was a filmmaker.[3] She attended Lomonosov Moscow State University,[4] and moved to New York aged 16 after the Soviet Union collapsed. She learned English while waitressing and obtained a place at University of California, Berkeley, where her majors were computer science and art.[3] She did research work in machine learning while at Berkeley.

In 1999 she started her professional career at Sun Microsystems, as an engineer at the Sun-Netscape Alliance working on the Java server. Shortly afterwards she founded GrokDigital, a technology marketing company. Tretikov was later appointed chief information officer and vice president of engineering of SugarCRM, Inc.[5] She is also an advisor to the board of Zamurai Corporation.

In 2012, Tretikov was a Stevie Awards Bronze Winner for Female Executive of the Year – Business Services – 11 to 2,500 Employees – Computer Hardware & Software.[6]
