Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

  •  Not done. Please note this user never edited, they should not have been warned for their username (@EvergreenFir:)

Extended editor discussion
@Xeno: Admins (Daniel Case in particular) have told me that a warning for a COI username is appropriate if they do not immediately edit. I usually wait a few days. Nothing on WP:BADNAME or {{uw-username}} or {{uw-coi-username}} say the user must edit before receiving a warning. This is an "unambiguously problematic" name as it's a WP:GROUPNAME. EvergreenFir (talk) 17:15, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Also, except in extreme cases, it is probably not worth taking action unless the user has made at least one recent edit."xenotalk 17:20, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For extreme cases, you report to UAA. I'll continue to template blatant violations. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:03, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@EvergreenFir: This was not an extreme case; templating/reporting uw-coi-usernames who have never edited is a waste of administrative and bureaucratic resources. –xenotalk 18:13, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
xeno Which is why I didn't report it to WP:UAA. You at taking one part of WP:BADNAME as blanket policy. I "considered leaving well alone" and decided against it. The name is a blatant violation. So I want with "Talk to the user". I did nothing wrong and am getting quite annoyed at the varying interpretations of a rather clear policy. I've learned to not report editless names to WP:UAA unless they are patently offensive. Now you're telling me to not template clear violations unless they edit? I think I'll follow the guidelines instead. It's been working well for a few months now. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:21, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Please don't template users who have never edited. It's unnecessary and a waste of everyone's time (including yours). –xenotalk 18:22, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
How the hell is asking a clear violation to change their name a waste of time and resources? I my mind, it'd help for the user to get off on the right foot before editing, not jump on them after their first few attempts. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:26, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'll follow what the guidelines say, which include templating, not your warped interpretation. If you want me to change, fix the guidelines. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:26, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The guideline says to leave them alone if they've never edited. It's unnecessary, bitey, and a waste of everyone's time. –xenotalk 18:31, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The guidelines suggest that as one course of action among many. Thanks for your input, but no. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:33, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for wasting bureaucratic resources asking users who have never edited to change their name. –xenotalk 18:35, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Now if you want to actually fix something, stop griping at me and spend your efforts changing broken rules. I'm not the problem, the guidelines are. EvergreenFir (talk) 18:37, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The guideline is not broken, you're just ignoring the paramount tenet of the guideline: leave users alone who have not edited. This is why it is the very first piece of guidance; it's a hierarchy and you're ignoring the very first piece of the workflow. –xenotalk 18:39, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
