Hotel Urbano is an online travel agency.[1][2][3][4][5] The firm was established by brothers João Ricardo Mendes and José Eduardo Mendes in 2011.[1] Its headquarters are based in the city of Rio de Janeiro.[6] According to business magazine Exame, Hotel Urbano is the largest website offering deals in hotel packages and flight tickets in Brazil[7]

Funding

The company received it third round of venture capital funding in August 2013. The $20 million investment was led by Insight Venture Partners. Insight Venture Partners invested in both of the company’s previous rounds of financing in 2011 as well as its second round in 2012.[8] Hotel Urbano's Series C round of funding makes it one of the most heavily funded travel startups in Brazil.[9] Tiger Global invested in Hotel Urbano in 2014.[10]

History

Brothers José Eduardo and João Ricardo Mendes as a startup in January 2011. The company claims 15 million registered users and 7.7 million Facebook fans. With the upcoming 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, the company projects over $200 million in revenue in 2013.[8] Hotel Urbano was appointed one of the one hundred most respected companies in Brazil by Merco and Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics, and João Ricardo Mendes received Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2014.[11][12]
