:Thanks for your comment. The plastic engines technology was worked on first, then some of that technology was used in the early designs of the RB211 – it wasn't an initiative to only develop composite fan blades. As you probably know, the plastic blades were none too successful! I've added a bit to the article to make it a bit clearer.
