Mike Florio (born June 8, 1965) is an American sportswriter. He writes for Profootballtalk.com, which he created and owns.

Florio is also a contributor to NBC's Sunday night NFL studio show Football Night in America and appears in the Sunday Night Football postgame show to break down the NFL’s top stories of the day with Bob Costas. Additionally, he appears with Peter King of Sports Illustrated during halftime of NBC’s coverage of Notre Dame football to discuss timely NFL topics.[3] And he is a complete and total tool!!!

Early life

Florio was born and raised in Wheeling, West Virginia. He attended Wheeling Central Catholic High School where he played Football, Basketball, Soccer and Baseball. He graduated in 1983.[4]

He graduated from Carnegie Mellon with two engineering degrees and went on to graduate from West Virginia University’s law school in 1991. [5] [6]

Sportswriter career

Florio began his sportswriting for a now-defunct site called NFLtalk.com in June 2000. The site was then bought out by ESPN.com, where Florio continued to write a rumor and news report. He worked for ESPN.com for 6 months.[7]

On November 1, 2001, Florio created the website Profootballtalk.com, which focuses on the National Football League.[8]

On June 14, 2009, it was announced that Profootballtalk.com would become an affiliate of NBC Sports, which would hold exclusive rights to PFT content although Florio would retain ownership.[9]

Florio's objectivity and accuracy have come into question in recent years, by fans, other writers, and NFL players alike, due to what many see as his mischaracterizations and unverified claims, aimed at those he disagrees with.[10][11][12]

After becoming a partner with NBC, Florio began contributing to NBC Sports' television coverage, including Football Night in America.[13]

Errors and eccentric behavior

Florio has reported many errors. His most notorious came in 2007 when he reported that broadcaster and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw had died in a car accident.[14] In 2012 Florio posted a column about why players shouldn't miss games for their child's birth[15] which was widely ridiculed.[16][17][18]

In June 2013, Florio had a public Twitter fight with Jacksonville Jaguars mascot Jaxson de Ville.[19][20][21]

Florio also has a curious and vicious hatred of ESPN's Todd McShay whom he has mocked and criticised numerous times [22][23][24][25] and even called "ESPN’s in-house leverage against a Mel Kiper contractual dispute".[26]

He has also feuded with NFL reporters Jason Lacanfora[27] and Ian Rapoport[28] in the past and once called Jon Gruden a fake tough guy.[29]

He supports the idea of changing the Washington Redskins team name.[30]

Florio is married and has one child. They live in Bridgeport, West Virginia.[31] Florio also used to be a lawyer.[32] Florio is a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings.[33]
