Vince Staples (born July 2, 1993) is an American rapper from Long Beach, California. He is one-third of the Hip hop group Cutthroat Boyz, alongside fellow California rappers Joey Fatts, and Aston Matthews. Staples is currently signed to Blacksmith Records, A.G., ARTium Recordings and Def Jam Recordings. He came to prominence with his appearances on albums by Odd Future members and his collaborative mixtape titled Stolen Youth, with fellow American rapper Mac Miller, who produced the entire project. In October 2014, he released his debut EP Hell Can Wait, which included the singles "Hands Up" and "Blue Suede". His debut album, Summertime '06, is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2015.
He was also chosen as part of the XXL Magazine 2015 Freshman Class.[1]
Life and career
Vince Staples was born in Long Beach California, the youngest of his mothers children but has a younger brother through his father. Due to is dad being constantly in and out of prison While Vince Staples began to live in and his mom always working he spent a lot of time with his grandparent in Compton. Growing up his family was heavily involved in gang activities starting with his grandfather who died when Vince as 12. He fell into the gang lifestyle shortly after when his friend Jabari Benson was murdered and stated that the EP Hell Can Wait and the album Summertime'06 are about his life during that time. At 15 he was fully committed to gang banging (he is a Naught Nasty Gangster Crip or 2NGC as well as his cousin and fellow rapper Joey Fatts) and had gotten into some trouble then moved to Atlanta for eight months. When he returned to LOng Beach he dropped out of school and was frequently kicked out of the house. Once he decided to get away from gang banging he started hanging out with some of his friends that made music and ended up meeting Odd Futures Syd Tha Kid, Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. Although he never wanted to be a rapper he featured on some of their songs, notably Earl's Epar and after being urged by friends ,fans wanting more and having no real plan for life he decide to pursue a care in rap. Long Beach, Compton and Lynwood, California.[2] Staples became associated with California-based Hip-Hop collective Odd Future, when he was kicked out of his house and moved in with Odd Future producer Syd tha Kyd.[3] He frequently collaborates with Odd Future members Mike G and Earl Sweatshirt. His debut mixtape Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1, was released December 30, 2011 via applebird.com.[4] In October 2012, Staples released a mixtape entitled Winter In Prague, produced entirely by Michael Uzowuru.[5]
On June 20, 2013, Staples released a mixtape titled Stolen Youth, which this mixtape was entirely produced by Mac Miller under his alias Larry Fisherman. The mixtape features guest appearances from Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Da$H, Hardo, and Staples' Cutthroat Boyz co-member, Joey Fatts.[2] Following Stolen Youth's release, he toured as a supporting act on Mac Miller's The Space Migration Tour. After making three appearances on Earl Sweatshirt's debut studio album Doris, including the single "Hive", the liner notes revealed Staples had recently signed to the hip hop record label Def Jam Recordings.[5]
On March 13, 2014, he released his fourth mixtape titled Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2.[6] In October 2013, he told Complex, Earl Sweatshirt, Michael Uzowuru, Childish Major, No ID, and Evidence providing the productions on this mixtape.[7] On February 18, 2014, Staples revealed both the cover artwork and track listing for the mixtape. No ID, Evidence, DJ Babu, Childish Major and Scoop DeVille provided production, as well as featuring guest appearances by singer-songwriters Jhené Aiko and James Fauntleroy.[8] On March 2, 2014, Staples began touring the United States; along with Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad on the Oxymoron World Tour, to support the release of Schoolboy Q's album Oxymoron.[9]
On August 15, 2014, Staples released a music video for "Blue Suede".[10] The track was also made available on iTunes.[11][12] On September 9, 2014, Vince released another new song titled "Hands Up" via iTunes. He released his latest project, Hell Can Wait on October 7, 2014.[13] During Staples' interview with XXL Magazine stating, Hell Can Wait will be include with guest appearances from Aston Matthews and Teyana Taylor, along with productions from No I.D., Infamous and Hagler.[14]
On May 4, 2015, Staples released "Señorita", as the first single from his debut album titled "Summertime '06."[15][16] Which is set to be released on June 30, 2015.[17]
