The 30th Southeast Asian Games, also known as the 2019 Southeast Asian Games or SEA Games, is a regional multi-sport event scheduled to take place in the Philippines.[1] It will be the fourth time the SEA Games will be held in the country, having hosted the event previously in 1981, 1991, and 2005. The hosting rights were originally awarded to Brunei Darussalam, but days before the 2015 Southeast Asian Games the country pulled out due to "financial and logistical reasons."

Organization

Host selection

Originally slated to host in 2011, Brunei was awarded the rights to host the 2019 staging of the Games. But during the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) meeting on July 4, 2015, Brunei National Olympic Council (BDNOC) vice president Haji Muhd Zamri Paduka Haji Hamdani announced that Brunei will abandon its responsibilities to host the SEA Games.

After the news broke out, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair Richie Garcia expressed the Philippines' interest in replacing Brunei as SEA Games host stating that the nation "is capable of hosting the games." The Philippines was originally scheduled to host the Games in 2025.

On July 10, 2015, the PSC confirmed that it has officially assumed the responsibilities of hosting the biennial meet.

Organizing committee

The Manila SEA Games Organizing Committee will soon be organized through an executive issuance from the President of the Philippines.

Venues

As of now, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) stated that they will not commission to build a new stadium and will, instead, utilize old and existing venues used previously in the 2005 SEA Games. The POC is also eyeing the 50,000-seater Philippine Arena and Philippine Sports Stadium as venue for the Ceremonies, and the Mall of Asia Arena.

Budget

The official budget for the 2019 SEA Games has not yet been released.

Participating nations

All 11 SEAGF members are expected to take part in the 2019 SEA Games. Below is a list of all the participating NOCs.

Issues and concerns

Possible conflict with the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup

Prior to the country's assumption as SEA Games host, the Philippines was bidding to host the 2019 Basketball World Cup. If the country wins the bid, it can lead to a conflict with the Games' competition window and sponsorship. [2] A successful Basketball World Cup bid, however, would mark the first time in Philippine sporting history that two high-profile international events are held in a single year.
