This is the user talk page for me, K6ka, where you can leave messages for me.

Here is a list of frequently asked questions I get, and their answers.

Q: I am not logged in to Wikipedia, and I got a message from you saying that I vandalized an article that I didn't edit. What's going on?
A: No need to panic! Wikipedia uses your IP address to identify you when you are not logged in. IP addresses may be shared between multiple users, or be reassigned to different users periodically. For example, if you are at school or a coffee shop, the IP address you are using is shared by everyone using the Internet there.
The message you received was intended for someone who had previously used the IP address you are currently using. If you did not vandalize Wikipedia, you can safely ignore the message. If you get these kinds of messages frequently, you may want to consider creating an account and logging in to it. That way, any messages you get will actually be intended for you, rather than someone else who used your IP address.
Q: I am not logged into Wikipedia, and I can't edit because you have blocked me. What do I do?
A: See the above: you are probably on a shared IP address, and someone before you was editing Wikipedia inappropriately. Shared IP addresses are usually blocked from editing for long periods of time to prevent abuse. The good news is that you can usually still edit if you log in. If you don't have an account, and cannot create one because of the block, you can request an account.
Q: You reverted one of my edits. Why is that?
A: Unless I'm reverting vandalism, I usually provide an explanation for my reverts, either in my edit summary, or in a message on your user talk page. There are many reasons for reverting an edit, and each case has its own reason. If you're still not sure why I reverted your edit, you can ask me on this talk page.
Q: Are there alternate ways of contacting you?

Huggle inserting wrong date heading

@MusikAnimal: Yep, sadly it is. The laptop I was using to make that edit belongs to my school so I don't have much control over it. For some reason the clock broke after DST, and every time I boot up the computer it flips the clock back one hour. I sadly can't change the clock without the admin password, so unfortunately I'll just have to wait for my laptop to realize that it's August. I do have other computers that do have the correct time and date, but they're slower, so I don't usually use them for recent changes patrolling. --I am k6ka ^{Talk to me!} _{See what I have done} 19:34, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not in my experience. Huggle would look at my computer's date and time and get confused when it's earlier than the date and time of the revision I reverted, so it would refuse to warn the user no matter what. Recent changes

The ContentTranslation extension has been updated:
- You can now type in list paragraphs on wikis with right-to-left scripts. [2]
- Some user interface updates changed how details in the ContentTranslation extension look. [3] [4] [5] [6]
The error page you see when the sites are not working is now simpler and easier to read. It also shows the Wikimedia logo. [7]
MediaWiki now supports redirects for CSS pages. [8]
Bots can't guess captchas unlimited times anymore. [9]

Problems

There was a problem with thumbnails on wikis with local images on July 24 and 25. It was due to a code error. [10]
We can't search by file type on Wikimedia wikis now. [11]

Changes this week

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from August 5. It will be on all Wikipedias from August 6 (calendar).

Did you know?

You can add quotations marks before and after a title or phrase with a single click.

Select the relevant text. Find the correct quotations marks in the special character inserter tool (marked as Ω in the toolbar).

Click the button. VisualEditor will add the quotation marks on either side of the text you selected.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team have been working on mobile phone support. They have fixed many bugs and improved language support. They post weekly status reports on mediawiki.org. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving language support and functionality on mobile devices.

Wikimania

The team attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. There they participated in the Hackathon and met with individuals and groups of users. They also made several presentations about VisualEditor and the future of editing.

Following Wikimania, we announced winners for the VisualEditor 2015 Translathon. Our thanks and congratulations to users Halan-tul, Renessaince, जनक राज भट्ट (Janak Bhatta), Vahe Gharakhanyan, Warrakkk, and Eduardogobi.

For interface messages (translated at translatewiki.net), we saw the initiative affecting 42 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 56.5% before the translathon, and 78.2% after (+21.7%). In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. Also, while 1.7% of the messages were outdated across all languages before the translathon, the percentage dropped to 0.8% afterwards (-0.9%).

For documentation messages (on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 26.6% before translathon, and 46.9% after (+20.3%). There were particularly notable achievements for three languages. Armenian improved from 1% to 99%; Swedish, from 21% to 99%, and Brazilian Portuguese, from 34% to 83%. Outdated translations across all languages were reduced from 8.4% before translathon to 4.8% afterwards (-3.6%).

We published some graphs showing the effect of the event on the Translathon page. Thank you to the translators for participating and the translatewiki.net staff for facilitating this initiative.

Recent improvements

Auto-fill features for citations can be enabled on each Wikipedia. The tool uses the citoid service to convert a URL or DOI into a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. You can see an animated GIF of the quick, simple process at mediawiki.org. So far, about a dozen Wikipedias have enabled the auto-citation tool. To enable it for your wiki, follow the instructions at mediawiki.org.

Your wiki can customize the first section of the special character inserter in VisualEditor. Please follow the instructions at mediawiki.org to put the characters you want at the top.

In other changes, if you need to fill in a CAPTCHA and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit Vega-based graphs. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.

Future changes

The team will be changing the appearance of selected links inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.

On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A recent controlled trial showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. You can learn more about this by watching a video of the July 2015 Wikimedia Research Showcase. The proportion of new accounts with access to both editing environments will be gradually increased over time. Eventually all new users have the choice between the two editing environments.

Changing my username

Hello, about a month ago, I changed my username from Khaled Akil to Hallit Aqueel, it still appears on Google search, Would you please check or help me knowing why it is still appears, giving though there is an article for Khaled Akil and the user page is taking it's place in the search result. @Hallit Aqueeal: I noticed that you initially tried to redirect that page to Khaled Akil, but then chose to blank it instead. Blanking a page does not actually remove the page, and it's possible this is why Google continues to list the page. @K6ka: I don't have an access to Khaled Akil anymore, because I changed my username and the previous one remained, I edited it and wrote in the blank page the code you gave me {{db-g7}} , do you think it is enough ? and can you please help to remove it ? Hallit Aqueeal, relax. Adding {{db-g7}} flags the page for deletion and adds the page to a special category, where an administrator patrolling that category can see it, and delete it accordingly. The page has now been deleted, so we must again wait for Google's cache to clear. Recent changes

MediaWiki can now hide the signature button when you edit a content page. [12]
The "Your preferences have been saved" message has changed. You can now see more easily what was saved when you change preferences several times. [13]
You can now play Ogg video files in some browsers that don't support this format. This solution uses JavaScript and works on desktop browsers only for now. It will work on mobile later. [14]
You can now use the same tools to edit style in VisualEditor on mobile as in desktop browsers. [15]
It is now easier to see if there is a JavaScript error in a user or site script. [16]
JavaScript authors:
- You can no longer use the Sajax library. You can see a list of pages to fix. [17] [18]

The content translation tool now works better. It is easier to use math, and useless tags are no longer added. [21]

Changes this week

@Wikipenguin 8: Sorry, I don't perform usurpations, since I don't have the authority to do so. See User:K6ka/Why didn't you rename me?: Lastly, I do not perform username usurpations, although I still clerk them. Wait Im confused, I just found you on an official list here [28] as a renamer. It it says you, K6ka, became one just over a month ago so maybe you didnt realize it! But anyway because I guess you really are one, could you take a look at the requests building up because none of the other renamers are close to beinf active. Also, I am thinking of becoming a usernames clerk like you were or you think you still are in a week or so, once I get some more of a grip on what wikipedia is like. From what Ive read, theres no official process to becoming one right you can jump right in. Do you have any suggestions too. Wikipenguin 8, I am indeed a global renamer (of course I know that!), but I'm not a bureaucrat or a steward, so while I can technically perform usurpations in practice I don't.

Also, while there is no process or training to become a clerk, clerks do need to familiarize themselves with both the global rename policy and the local English Wikipedia username policy. They should also be knowledgeable enough with wikitext to know how to fix broken markup, and should also know about the global account feature and how it works. --I am k6ka ^{Talk to me!} _{See what I have done} 23:07, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
