The Walking Dead

Fear the Walking Dead is an American television series created by Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson[1] that premiered on AMC on August 23, 2015.[2] It is a spin-off and a prequel to the horror drama television series The Walking Dead,[3] which is based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. AMC approved the series pilot on March 9, 2015, with a two-season commitment:[4] the first season comprises six episodes, while the second season will consist of 15 episodes to air in 2016.[5]

Overview

Set in Los Angeles, California, the series follows a dysfunctional family composed of high school guidance counselor Madison Clark, her English teacher boyfriend Travis Manawa, and her overachieving daughter Alicia and drug-addicted son Nick, in the onset of the zombie apocalypse.[6][7] The four are forced to choose between profoundly changing or proceeding as their current flawed selves in order to come to terms with the impending collapse of civilization.[8][9]

Cast and characters

Main cast

  • Cliff Curtis as Travis Manawa, a high school English teacher, Madison's fiancé, and a divorcé who shares custody of his son, Chris, with his ex-wife, Liza.[10]
  • Kim Dickens as Madison Clark, a high school guidance counselor, Travis' fiancée, and single mother of Alicia and Nick.[10]
  • Frank Dillane as Nick Clark, Madison's 19-year-old son, who has flunked out of community college and is battling a heroin addiction.[7][10][11]
  • Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia Clark, Madison's high-achieving and ambitious daughter, who is in a relationship with her high school classmate, Matt. She is able to read situations well and often finds herself at odds with Nick, due to his unmotivated nature.[10]
  • Elizabeth Rodriguez as Liza Ortiz, Travis' ex-wife and mother of their son, Chris. A free-spirited bohemian type, she is attempting to rebound from her disastrous marriage and is in nursing school.[10][12]
  • Mercedes Mason as Ofelia Salazar, born and raised in the U.S. and protective of her immigrant parents.[10]
  • Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris Manawa, Travis and Liza's son, who resents his father for their divorce.[12]
  • Rubén Blades as Daniel Salazar, Ofelia's father. He is a barber who moved his family to LA from a different culture decades ago, to start fresh.[13]

Recurring cast

  • Patricia Reyes Spíndola as Griselda Salazar, Daniel's wife and Ofelia's mother. Catholic and unwilling to justify the supernatural phenomena with science, she attributes the ills of the world to the sins committed by mankind.
  • Sandrine Holt as Dr. Bethany Exner, a confident and skilled doctor.[14]
  • Maestro Harrell as Matt, Alicia's artsy boyfriend.
  • Colman Domingo as Strand, a smart and sophisticated man with a mysterious past.

  • Megan Danso as Jazz, a teenage girl who wants to leave the city.
  • Scott Lawrence as Art Costa, the principal at the high school where Madison and Travis work.

Production

Development

In September 2013, AMC announced they were developing a companion series to The Walking Dead, which follows a different set of characters created by Robert Kirkman.[19] In September 2014, AMC ordered a pilot, which was written by Kirkman and Dave Erickson, and directed by Adam Davidson.[20] It is executive produced by Kirkman, Erickson, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert, with Erickson serving as showrunner.[21] The project was originally known as Cobalt;[8] Kirkman confirmed in March 2015 that the series would be titled Fear the Walking Dead.[1] On March 9, 2015, AMC announced it had ordered it to series, with a two-season commitment: the first season, comprising six episodes, premiered on August 23, 2015; the second season comprising 15 episodes, will air in 2016.[4][5]

In Australia, the series premiered on August 24, 2015, within hours of the American broadcast during the afternoon, with a primetime replay, on FX.[31][32]

Reception

Critical response

The series premiere of Fear the Walking Dead has received generally positive reviews from recognized critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 77%, based on 48 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Fear the Walking Dead recycles elements of its predecessor, but it's still moody and engrossing enough to compete with the original."[33] On Metacritic, the premiere has a score of 66 out of 100, based on 33 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[34]

Elisabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post gave it a three out of four star review, and wrote, "The first two episodes are creepily suspenseful–they're great examples of how effective a slow pace and a moody atmosphere can be."[35] Another positive review came from Ken Tucker of Yahoo TV, who wrote, "Fear the Walking Dead is a mood piece, more artful than the original series" and that the cast is "terrific".[36] Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter gave it an average review, writing, "The 90-minute first episode and the hour-long second episode are, while not actually boring, certainly less magnetic than the original."[37] One of the harshest negative reviews came from HitFix, on Daniel Fienberg and Alan Sepinwall's podcast, where Fienberg called it "awful, just horrible [...] as bad as The Walking Dead has ever gotten at its very worst. This is that bad. I've been kind of stunned to see people being generous to it. [...] I thought this was almost unwatchably bad." Sepinwall called his B- review "slightly generous".[38][39]

Ratings

The series premiere attracted 10.1 million total viewers, with 6.3 million in the advertiser-coveted 18- to 49-year-old demographic, both cable television records for a series premiere.[40][41]
