Action Hero Biju is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language action crime film directed by Abrid Shine and starring Nivin Pauly in the title role.[5][6] This is Shine's second venture as a director after his debut 1983 (2014).[7] The movie also marks Nivin Pauly's debut as a producer.[8] Jerry Amaldev composed the original songs, while Rajesh Murugesan did the background score.[9] The filming which began in May 2015 was wrapped in October.[10] After being postponed several times, Action Hero Biju was released on February 4, 2016.[11][12]

Cast

Production

After the success of his debut venture,[13] director Abrid Shine began pre-production on his second film. He wanted the subject to be action oriented and discussions with Nivin turned it to a police story. In August 2014, Abrid subsequently made an official announcement that his next venture would be titled Action Hero Biju and would feature Nivin in the lead role. The movie started rolling in May 2015.[14]

Nivin Pauly took special fighting classes and followed special diets to gain more weight and followed workout regimens, to fit the role of a police officer.[15]

Reception

Critical

Veeyen of Nowrunning.com is all praise for the movie and states that "the cinematic reconstruction of the life of a police officer that Abrid Shine attempts in 'Action Hero Biju' is efficient to the core, and the craft elements on display exceptional. The mother of all gambles that the film indulges in - of keeping conventionalities at bay - makes it a level-headed film that traverses the rugged planes of law, justice, truth and life with consummate ease."[16]

Arathi Kannan of Manorama Online gives a rating of 3.5/5 and she says "With a salute to the cops, who sweat their ways through their duties and moral obligations, Abrid Shine leaves a sparkling note of thanks before the screen blackout."[17]

Aswin Bharadwaj of Lensmen Reviews gives the movie a rating of 3.5/5 and he says "On the whole, Action Hero Biju is humorous, real, emotional and atypical. It has multiple messages for us, but there is no conventional preaching. If you are someone who likes to see humor and sentimental scenes without the company of theatrical dialogues and music, Action Hero Biju will entertain you."[18]

Vivek Velusamy of GCinemas[19] rated the movie 7/10 terming it with adjectives "Atypical, unconventional, realistic and entertaining". He also said that, though there is no solid plot this police movie still impresses.

Box office

The film received a good opening in Kerala box office, grossing 1.59 crore (US$190,000) in the initial day and 4.38 crore (US$520,000) after 5 days. Made at a budget of 2 crore (US$240,000). It opened well in Tamil Nadu, grossing 18.63 lakh (US$22,000) from more than 12 screens in the opening day, which is the highest opening gross for a Malayalam film there.[3][12] The film collected 12 crores in 50 days.
